Lord Cotys is the main antagonist of the 2014 film Hercules. He is the tyrannical king of Thrace, father of Ergenia, grandfather of Arius and one Hercules's two archenemies, alongside King Eurystheus.
He was portrayed by the late John Hurt, who also played the Horned King in The Black Cauldron, Harry in Pride and Adam Sutler in V for Vendetta.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He poisoned his own son-in-law before the events of the film to be king, although he was already old for that.
- He threatened his own daughter Ergenia to keep her mouth shut about it, or else he'll kill her son, who is also his own grandson. The fact the former king was Cotys' son in law means he also expects his own daughter to be okay with the death of her husband.
- He deceived Hercules into believing King Rhesus was the villain of the story so he would defeat him. His plan succeeded after a big effort and at the cost of many casualties on both sides, and Rhesus was imprisoned and humiliated in front of the crowd alongside many people, all being forced to do the walk of shame.
- He ordered his soldiers to behead his daughter after she betrayed him and allied himself with Hercules, having no qualms about executing his own daughter and child.
- He ordered the execution of Hercules and his mercenary team and sadistically taunted Hercules about the death of his family, telling the son of Zeus that he would allow Hercules and his friends to join his wife and children in the afterlife.
- He allied himself with the treacherous King Eurystheus and plotted to conquer and take over the entire world by uniting his armies with Eurystheus's forces.
- He doesn't care about his own men, frequently sacrificing most of his military forces just to save his own skin, and he also doesn't care about the deaths of his subordinates, such as Eurystheus and General Sitacles, coldly reacting to their deaths and never mentioning them afterwards.
- He tries to kill Hercules, his friends and Ergenia for the last time, by attacking them with all of his armies, even going as far as using his own grandson Arius as a hostage in order to make Hercules kneel before him and surrender.
- He showed ruthlesness, such as using his own soldiers as living shields, ordering them to kill Hercules and his allies, not caring about his subordinates's safety. Additionally, his death wasn't played for sympathy and was treated like deserved karma for his multiple atrocities.
- He's just a cruel man who craves power, and occasionally kills or tortures people in front of a vast crowd just because he likes it.
