Dale Ferdinand Kobble, better known as Longlegs, is the titular main antagonist of the 2024 crime horror film of the same name.
He is a mysterious and twisted satanical murderer who has formed an alliance with Satan and creates dolls, which are then used to magically influence people into committing the crimes. He is also the arch-nemesis of FBI Agent Lee Harker, whom he has a creepy obsession with for personal reasons.
He was portrayed by Nicolas Cage, who also portrayed Dracula in Renfield.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- While he is likely a pawn for Satan, he willingly chose the path to follow him, and unlike Ruth Harker, who did it out of protection for herself and Lee, he did not have that excuse.
- Although he worships the Devil and even calls him a "friend," it's more of a fanatical devotion and nothing that suggests genuine loyalty.
- Word of God states that he is in love with Satan and his botched plastic surgeries are attempts to make himself beautiful for Satan.
- However, Word of God does not count without on-screen evidence, and although the former is evident on Longlegs' face, there's no indication that Longlegs holds sincere love for Satan that isn't fanatical devotion.
- He murdered a large number of families (including nine-year-old children) via mass brainwashing by creating dolls and using Satanic magic to allow Satan to influence them into killing themselves.
- Most of these murders are often committed on Christian families, with the fathers often committing the murders, with the murders being quite horrific and brutal.
- He manipulates both Ruth Harker and Lee Harker into being pawns in his scheme by threatening to kill the other, with him also saying he would cut off Ruth's breasts. He ties up Ruth and forces her to be his accomplice in exchange for him sparing the life and soul of Lee.
- And the reason behind this is due to Ruth rejecting his gift and trying to get him to leave, which personally enraged him, showing how incredibly petty he is.
- Although Lee doesn't remember her experiences, it's likely that a mix between the trauma that he put upon her as well as the mind control of the dolls changed Lee's personality and made her less ambitious of her goals that she wanted to initially pursue as a child (that being an actor).
- After revealing Ruth as an accomplice to his murders to Lee, he proceeded to kill himself by viciously bashing his skull on the table, all part of his plan to hurt Lee.
- Even in his death, Longlegs got exactly what he wanted, as he killed himself on his own terms and had Ruth influence Carter and his family with his last doll, resulting in his and his wife's deaths.
- Although he is an outcast, this isn't played for sympathy for many reasons:
- In most instances, he does not try to mask his odd behavior, and when he does, it is only to manipulate his targets. Additionally, many of these strange behaviors almost come off as predatory in nature, such as him talking to the girl at the store.
- It is clear that despite his insanity, he is incredibly clever, as his plans take incredibly careful action and planning, enabling him to get away with his crimes while also leaving subtle clues.
- He is capable of dropping his bizarre personality if someone rejects him and his "gifts," which was best shown with Ruth.
- Overall, the story illustrates that even with his childish and insane nature, he still has moral agency, as he has proven to be both clever and sadistic about his crimes.
- Even though he has some comical moments (like when he does a little dance when he's being arrested), he's still regarded as a serious threat, and he's treated as such in-universe.
