The Devourer of Time will begin to consume all space-time continua... despair and hatred... to return all things to nothingness... that is what it desires.
~ Belthasar explaining the Time Devourer's motivation.

Lavos (in Japanese: ラヴォス Ravosu) is the overarching antagonist of the Chrono franchise, serving as the main antagonist of Chrono Trigger and the overarching antagonist of its sequels, Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross.

It is an alien parasite that crashed into Earth in 65,000,000 B.C., burrowing into the Earth so that it could copy the DNA of all living beings and one day emerge to cause the apocalypse. It was originally successful, but the apocalypse was eventually stopped by the intervention of three warriors who travelled through time in order to destroy Lavos and prevent the end of the world. Defeated, the creature was sent to the Darkness Beyond Time, where it merges with Schala into a new form known as the Dream Devourer. This form would eventually mature into the Time Devourer, a monster that desires to consume all of spacetime and completely annihilate the multiverse.

What Makes It Pure Evil?[]

  • It crashed onto Earth with the intention to eventually destroy it, and in the process of it embedding itself into the Earth it killed all of the dinosaurs, which are a fully sapient race in the Chrono universe.
  • After the Kingdom of Zeal created the Mammon Machine in order to draw power from Lavos' energy, Lavos would induce insanity within Queen Zeal, thus making it indirectly responsible for all of her evil acts.
  • During the original timeline, in the year of 1999 AD Lavos would emerge from the Earth and wipe the majority of all life, plunging the remains of humanity into a helpless state of starvation.
    • By 2300 AD, it transformed into Death Peak and has begun birthing Lavos Spawn, baby members of its species, with the intent of either sending them offworld to continue the vicious cycle on more planets or sending them to other places on Earth that are resisting Lavos' influence.
  • Due to Lavos' destruction of the Earth, a group of three warriors led by Crono would travel back in time to try and stop its emergence. Queen Zeal responds by summing Lavos to stop the party, at which point it defeats the party in combat and kills Crono.
  • Lavos is eventually defeated by three warriors from across time, but it still exists in the Darkness Beyond Time, where it would find the lost spirit of Schala, proceeding to merge with her to create the Time Devourer, and consuming her mind in the process.
  • Still in the Darkness Beyond Time, the Dream Devourer would eventually mature into the Time Devourer, a being that not only has Lavos' destructive desire, but also sees all other life as inferior to itself, having become a twisted Social Darwinist that wishes to annihilate the entire multiverse.
  • Using the last fragment of its physical form on Earth, the Frozen Flame, it manipulates the evolution of humanity in order to fulfill its goals.
  • By the time Serge, the main protagonist of Chrono Cross, reaches the Time Devourer, it has completely consumed Schala's essence. Even after Serge defeats the monster, Schala does not return to life despite being freed from its control, meaning that in the end the Time Devourer did completely erase Schala from existence.

Trivia[]

  • Though once presented as a Generic Doomsday Villain in Chrono Trigger, Lavos eventually qualified as Pure Evil due to the events of Chrono Cross, as after it became the Time Devourer it was revealed to be sapient by its capability of scheming and seeking humanity's destruction out of Social Darwinism.
  • While Lavos' gender is never made clear, it is likely that Lavos is female due to the existence of Lavos Spawn, assuming that its species can't reproduce asexually.
  • Lavos was named by Ayla, which means "Big Fire," in her language.
