The Large Rattler is a minor antagonist in The Last of Us Part II. He is the leader of a group called the Rattlers, who enslave and torture many people they find by luck on their patrols.
He was voiced by Travis Willingham, who also voiced Scabrous Scrotus in Mad Max, and Shane Bommer in inFamous: First Light.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Whilst he has some comedic moments, such as commenting that Abby has "arms like [his]", or his punching out of Lev being funny due to how over-the-top it is, or being commented upon by fans that he resembles a "fat Geralt", this is only funny for the audience as he is still taken completely seriously in-universe, with Abby notably screaming in outrage at witnessing Lev's manhandling.
- He leads the Rattlers, a group of survivors who capture and enslave survivors, constantly tortuing and beating them and forcing them into difficult labor.
- When the group catches Infected, they use them as guard dogs to devour any tresspassers. And when some prisoners are unable to work or keep trying to escape, they would purposely get them Infected and then turn them as guard dogs.
- When his group caught Abby and Lev, he brutally punched Lev into a garage door, knocking him out in the process.
- While he orders his men to stop beating Abby, this was only out of pragmatism so that they could use her as slave later.
- When slaves try to escape too many times, the Rattlers would hang them on the beach and leave them to die a slow and painful death from either diseases or starvation.
- The slaves also suffer from malnourishment and exhaustion, as evidenced when Abby went from a gruff muscled woman to a skinny one.
- To prove just how insanely cruel the Rattlers are, some survivors would rather commit suicide to avoid being caught by them.
- Tried to capture Ellie as well when she was caught in a trap and was bleeding badly after being stabbed by a tree branch. The Large Rattler even insists on taking her despite her wounds.
- When Ellie wounds and corners him, he pathetically begs for mercy and gives her Abby and his teammates' location to her in hopes of being spared.
- While at first he seems worried about his partners, all care towards them is subverted when he gives them away to Ellie out of cowardice. He's also responsible for all their likely brutal deaths at Ellie's hands.
- What makes it worse is that he knows Ellie is bit, which means he was aware she could turn into an Infected at any moment (although she can't since she's immune, the Large Rattler didn't know that).
- While The Last of Us has high heinous standards with the likes of David being a cannibal and rapist and Issac Dixon being a genocidal tyrant, the Large Rattler easily passes since slavery is a unique crime for the series, and the Rattlers perform it on a mass scale and while torture and mutilation are both pretty common in this universe, the Rattlers do it constantly and sometimes sadistically which makes them worse than people like Joel or Ellie who torture only when they have no choice.
