The Lady of the Green Kirtle is the main antagonist of the fourth book in The Chronicles of Narnia series The Silver Chair.

Where she came from is unknown as is her species of which she claims never knew age nor death. It is, however, speculated that the Lady was in some ways related to the infamous Northern Witch Jadis, though even then, it is only a theory mostly unlikely because of Jadis eradicating all life in her universe. Regardless, she came to the Underland, making herself the de-facto queen of the terrain, but she had aspirations of invading the Overworld as well.

She was portrayed by Barbara Kellerman in the BBC series, who also played Jadis the White Witch in the same show.

What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]

  • She murders King Caspian X's wife by poisoning her to death in her serpent form.
  • She enchants, kidnaps, and brainwashes Prince Rilian when he wanted to avenge his mother. She would force him to sit in the eponymous Silver Chair to maintain his brainwashing by claiming he would transform into a hideous snake.
  • Unlike most G-rated forms of brainwashing where the victim is not overall harmed/tortured, Rilian is fully aware of his predicament begging for Eustace, Jill, and Puddleglum to free him all while foaming at the mouth.
  • She brainwashes all the Earthmen, hoping to use them all to conquer Narnia.
    • And to make it worse, according to Golg, the Earthmen were very sensitive to the surface, and didn't want to go near it, showing she didn't care for her brainwashed henchmen.
  • She leads the heroes in a disarray to have them get eaten by giants.
  • She attempts to brainwash the heroes into believing Narnia and everything above ground was not real and nearly succeeds.
    • And when her plan was foiled by Puddleglum, she threatened to turn his blood into fire if he touched her fire again.
  • During her final battle with the heroes, she opted to kill everything in the Underland.

Trivia[]

  • Her unseen live-action film version, whose overarching presence in The Voyage of the Dawn Trader film adaptation was confirmed by the film's documentary, doesn't count as Pure Evil, as she never appeared onscreen and the planned film adaptation of The Silver Chair went ultimately unproduced. However, it is possible she would've become Pure Evil had the movie come to fruition.
