“ | So, I think the sea monster wants the throne, but it's too smart to go on land, or maybe it can't. And the ape is too smart to go into the ocean, so that's why it's baiting the ape, throwing whales at him, just, like, being a jerk. | „ |
~ Charlie theorizing about the Kraken's motivation. |
The Kraken is the main antagonist in Season 1 of the 2023 Netflix animated television series Skull Island, a sequel to Kong: Skull Island and the first television series of the MonsterVerse franchise.
It is a chimeric, malevolent, sadistic, aquatic cephalopod-like Titan that prowls Skull Island's surrounding waters, killing anyone or anything who comes near it, and later seeks to kill and usurp the island's ruler King Kong. It is one of the archenemies of Kong (alongside Skull Devil, Skar King and Mechagodzilla).
What Makes It Pure Evil?[]
- Once it was awakened by Kong after washing his wounds after killing a trio of Killer Chameleon, it attacked the island settlers, poisoning it's civilians and killing Kong's best friend, as she was alive long enough for Kong to watch her die, then waved its tentacles at Kong in a taunting manner for no apparent reason.
- Attacked a ship full of mercenaries, killing hundreds of them.
- When Charlie and his dad went to Skull Island, it attacked their boat, killing Mike's dad and Boomer again for no reason.
- It threw whales as provocation, in order to lure Kong into a fight, where it would have the advantage.
- When a rescue helicopter came to save Charlie and his friends, it destroyed the craft, leaving our heroes stranded.
- When Charlie steals Kong's friend's necklace and the giant ape chases them, it reveals itself and tries to kill Kong, dragging him down into the depths, which nearly drown him.
- While its death is brutal (getting ripped in two by Kong), it is very well deserved for what it did rather than being played for sympathy.
- It displays full moral agency as best shown by the various taunts directed at Kong, showing that it kills out of pure sadism.
- Despite the MonsterVerse's high heinous standards, the Kraken lacks the resources compared to King Ghidorah and Skar King, and stands out for its personal villainy against Kong.
Trivia[]
- The Kraken is the second villain from the MonsterVerse franchise to be Pure Evil, the first being King Ghidorah and latest being Skar King.
- Similarly, the Kraken is the second villain from a speculative biology-centered work to be Pure Evil considering Monsterverse's scientific take on the Titans.
