It is the key to my freedom. It will unlock this prison. I order you to search the corners of the universe until you find this key. Find me the codex. Knull, also known as the King in Black, is the overarching antagonist of the Venom trilogy in Sony's Spider-Man Universe.
He is a primordial Klyntarian deity and elder god as well as the creator of the Symbiotes. After being betrayed and imprisoned by his own creations, he spent most of his life searching for a key that could free him known as the Codex. Upon discovering the Codex's location, he sent the Xenophages to Earth to retrieve it.
He is portrayed by Andy Serkis, who also played David Robey in Luther: The Fallen Sun.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General/Background[]
- He earned himself a fearsome reputation as the Slicer of Worlds, using his supernatural sword to carve entire worlds and burn them with shockwaves out of sheer sadism.
- He created the symbiotes to help him conquer and destroy many worlds in order to eliminate all life and shroud the cosmos back into darkness. He is doing this because light is not at all conducive for his kingdom's stability, which has always been treated as a petty reason for his sinning.
- He abused his symbiotes and they decided they had enough and imprisoned him by constructing Klyntar to bind him and his sword to a chair with black cords sincerely hoping he would remain unconscious forever. Made worse is that he seemed to delusionally believe their retaliation was completely unprovoked. Fearing him even then, they fled to Earth for "a safe haven".
- Although he doesn’t abuse or torture his Xenophages unlike what he did to the Symbiotes who imprisoned him back then, he cares nothing for said animalistic monsters since he threatens to massacre them if they take too long to find the Codex, and when Venom kills them (arguably giving these amoral animals a mercy kill), Knull only expresses displeasure at being put in his place rather than mourning his own creations.
- During his imprisonment, he plans to resume his mission of destroying and slicing as many worlds as possible after being freed.
- Toxin even made it clear that he will kill "everyone, everything" that stands in his way and that "there will be nothing left".
- While he is the God of the Void which means his role is to make the Void as prevalent a presence in the cosmos as he possibly can, nothing in the movie indicates he has moral agency issues or that he is incapable of acting outside of his divine nature.
- Despite his limited screentime, he still shows a consistently sadistic, vindictive, unaccountable, and narcissistic personality.
- Basically most, if not every single negative event in the trilogy can be blamed on Knull.
Venom: The Last Dance[]
- After he sensed the Codex, he sent the Xenophages to find it. Because of this, he would be responsible for the number of deaths the Xenophages would cause.
- When one of them tracked down Eddie and Venom, it endangered an airplane with hundreds of passengers, which could've ended up killing them during its fight with Eddie and Venom had they not kicked it off the plane and into its engine, which more than likely killed the passengers anyway.
- Tracking Eddie and Venom in a nearby forest, it brutally ate and killed three of Strickland's men alive. This would cause General Strickland to seek not only vengeance on Eddie and Venom due to attracting the Xenophage, but also kill them for the sake of ensuring Knull will remain bound.
- The same Xenophage would track both Eddie and Venom down in Las Vegas, where it came close to attacking Mrs. Chen, Eddie's long-time acquaintance. Following Eddie and Venom's codex signal to Area 51's underground facilities, it killed and ate several guards, scientists, and even Patrick Mulligan, who is fused with Toxin when they tried to protect Venom. Sooner or later, it would devour other Symbiotes and their chosen hosts during the midst of the battle, such as Rascal and Scorn. This leaves Agony the only Symbiote to survive Knull's minions.
- Receiving the Xenophage's distress signal from Earth, Knull sent more on the way, which further escalated more deaths in battle, such as Lasher, the symbiote that possessed Sadie Christmas.
- He is fully responsible for Venom's sacrifice as he would assimilate all of the Xenophages and have General Strickland pour acid chemicals onto them, including Venom himself, to destroy the Codex as he had no choice but to stop more worlds from being sliced much to the sadness of Eddie Brock
- Despite Venom's presumed death and sacrifice, Knull still threatens to destroy all planets and have Earth burn to the ground while making Eddie Brock watch.
Trivia[]
- He is the only Pure Evil in the Venom trilogy to not die at the end of the film he appears in.
- He is the second iteration of Knull to be Pure Evil, after his original counterpart from the comics.
- With recent reports suggesting that Sony Pictures is more open to sharing its Spider-Man characters with Marvel Studios, there is a possibility that Knull could return in a future installment. If he does, it remains unclear how this would affect his PE status.
