King Louis XIV is the main antagonist of the late Alexandre Dumas' novel The Vicomte de Bragelonne and its 1998 very loosely-based film adaptation The Man in the Iron Mask. A heavily fictionalized version of the actual historical figure, Louis is a cruel, selfish tyrant who spends France's money on wars and his own extravagant lifestyle while letting his own people starve.
In the 1998 film, he was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, who also played his twin brother Phillippe in the same movie.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He had his own twin brother, the rightful King of France, imprisoned in order to seize the throne for himself.
- He wastes the country's money on wars and his own extravagant lifestyle while allowing his people to starve.
- He sends rotten food to the peasants while keeping all of the good food for himself and for his soldiers.
- He sends Raoul off to die in battle so that he can have Raoul's fiancee, Christine all to himself.
- He seduces and discards Christine, eventually driving her to commit suicide.
- To make things worse, when he discovers this, he shows no remorse nor regret because of this.
- He is a very manipulative and dishonest person, pretending to be nice and polite towards others in order to accomplish his goals. For example, when Christine starts mourning Raoul, he pretends to comfort her, only to intimidate her shortly afterwards.
- He is very hypocritical as he expects full loyalty from his men despite being disloyal to everyone.
- He forced his own mother to see her second son, who's also his own twin, gets beaten.
- He orders hundreds of protesting peasants to be shot.
- He never shows any concern for anyone and is even willing to kill his loyal men if something doesn't go his way.
- He tries to kill Phillippe, but he ends up killing D'Artagnan, who is revealed to be both his loyal captain of the guard and his biological father. To make things worse, his motive to kill his own father was because his father dared to love anyone other than him.
