Katz is the main antagonist of Cartoon Network’s Courage the Cowardly Dog TV Series. He is a cat that usually runs a business and uses said business to commit crimes and murder people. He is also the arch-nemesis of Courage.
He was voiced by Paul Schoeffler.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He has lured numerous people into his numerous traps where he acts as a caring businessman, so he could get them killed for his amusement.
- Most of the time, his actions are done solely for his own, sadistic and twisted entertainment, at the expense of the overall suffering of others, as seen in "Klub Katz". Other times, it is also based on egoism, as seen in "Katz Kandy".
- Katz expresses sadism while encountering Courage. He prefers to prolong the dog’s pain by setting up games knowing that Muriel and others are in danger. In "A Night At Katz Motel", Katz expresses intense glee as he is about to kill Courage with a giant spider.
- While he does refer to his spiders as his "loves", he doesn’t show any explicit care for them nor does he try to save them from danger. Instead he treats them as nothing more than mere tools for his goals.
- While one might say his "little sports" are him being "honorable" towards his victims (saying that if they win he'll let them live), this isn't the case as it's known that he knows he will always beat his victims and he only wants to play these types of games to torture his victims, making their fates all the more slow and painful.
- Also, there's no true indication that Katz will actually let his victims go if they beat him in a game of sports. This means that Katz only likes playing in games of sports, and even if someone could beat him in a game of sports, he would not let his victim go anyway and he would kill them.
- He utterly detests dogs, and strongly infers he hates Courage simply for being one rather than constantly foiling his plans. Unlike Kitty (who at least had good reasons to hate dogs, especially Mad Dog), Katz has no justification for this.
- While he does join Eustace's team in “Ball of Revenge,” it is only because he adores his sadism. He also takes the opportunity because he wants to make Courage suffer for his own enjoyment and then kill him (and likely Muriel and Eustace) in the most cruel possible fashion.
- He openly takes sadistic pleasure in his crimes and brags about his lack of remorse for them.
- While he has numerous comedic moments such as getting trapped in taffy or torturing Muriel by mixing the colors in the washer, he is still taken seriously as a threat in-universe, and therefore these do not detract from his heinousness.
- Although he is defeated numerous times, he is only seen getting punished by Courage and the Bagges, and he is never seen getting removed from his jobs, and it is more likely that he hasn’t, meaning that he is likely still luring people to his motel, club, candy store and submarines off-screen.
- Compared to other villains and even other Pure Evildoers in the show, Katz is easily the most heinous villain of the entire Courage the Cowardly Dog roster, considering that he has the highest kill count out of everyone in the show, even surpassing the Queen of the Black Puddle, as shown in the episode "Klub Katz".
TV series[]
- In "A Night At Katz Motel", he is shown running a motel where his guests enter but never exit as he has them fed to his giant, mutated spiders, and later in the episode it is shown that he had done this to at least 9 people, as we can see 9 skulls. He attempts to do the same to Courage, Muriel and Eustace once they check in to the motel, despite the fact Courage was already out of the motel as Katz wanted.
- In "Klub Katz", he has people who joined his club turned into machines against their wills. He has them spar in an arena for his own amusement resulting in them killing each other and taking sadistic delight in doing so. It's even implied that he's forced family members to kill each other with his line "I love a good family brawl". The arena is shown with multiple mountains of destroyed machines, showing that he succeded in killing hundreds of people, making this his most terrifying role in the series.
- He once again tries to do the same to Eustace and Muriel, and possibly Courage.
- In "Katz Kandy", he attempts to turn Muriel into candy because she refuses to give him the recipe for her biscuits, as he always loses to her at cooking competitions, and manages to turn Courage into a giant colored candy marshmallow when he came to rescue Muriel. He later tries to turn Eustace into candy when he also came to rescue Muriel.
- Also prior to turning Courage into a marshmallow, he tortures him in a looking game, in which both Katz and Courage triybto prevent themselves from closing their eyes, but Courage can’t resist as his eyes get hot from not getting closed for a long time, and then Courage loses for closing his eyes when he gets scared by Eustace.
- After Katz manages to turn Courage into a giant colored candy marshmallow, it is implied that the other giant colored candy marshmallows shown in the scene are actually other victims of Katz's tricks, showing that he lured them into a trap once again. To make matters even worse, these marshmallows are completely motionless, which also implies that they died from hunger and dehydratation.
- In "Katz Under the Sea", he runs another business where his guests are in a submarine. However, Katz attempts to bomb the ship with everyone on board to hurt another business. While attempting to bomb the submarine, Katz tries to save himself and leave everyone else to their demise. Despite being eaten by a shark, he manages to bomb the ship.
- In one scene, a skeleton is shown in one of the submarine's prison's jails, which means Katz got the person killed when they saw so much about his scheme.
- Also before escaping, he mocks Courage for seemingly having failed to save all the people in the submarine.
- In "Ball of Revenge", he is one of Courage's past foes who joins Eustace to get rid of Courage once and for all. He injured Courage with a spiked ball, and then is going to incinerate him with a flamethrower, but Courage prevents this by screaming a lot. The scream is powerful enough to break the floor, opening a hole in the process which results in the defeat of Eustace's team along with Katz.
Trivia[]
- His Straight Outta Nowhere version doesn't qualify, as he is affable, cares for his friend Le Quack and has some comedic moments that detract from his heinousness (such as failing to see Courage, Scooby, and Shaggy's disguises).
- Katz is the first character from a Cartoon Network show to qualify as Pure Evil since 1999.
