Karl Ruprecht Kroenen. Hitler's Top Assassin, and Head of the Thule Occult Society.
~ Professor Broom recognizing Kroenen.

Karl Ruprecht Kroenen is the secondary antagonist of the 2004 movie adaptation of Hellboy. He is the undead cyborg assassin of Rasputin, and his most loyal supporter.

He is portrayed by Ladislav Beran.

What makes him Pure Evil?[]

  • As a child, he lost what he considered his "pure voice" due to puberty and developed his sadomasochistic tendencies and an obsession with "purity and perfection".
  • As revealed in the DVD comics, before joining Rasputin with Project Ragnarok as chief engineer, he worked at Auschwitz where he sadistically and gleefully experimented on nearly a dozen children in his pursuit of "perfection and purity".
  • Willingly helped Grigori Rasputin with attempting to summon the Ogdru Jahad to usher in an era of darkness and discord.
  • He mercilessly kills multiple Allied soldiers in an attempt to stop them from sabotaging Project Ragnarok.
  • When he and Ilsa Haupstein went to resurrect Rasputin, he kills their guide as a sacrifice to bring him back.
  • He and Ilsa broke into the Vatican to steal an urn containing the remnants of Sammael where he killed multiple security guards.
  • He and Ilsa resurrect Sammael in the NYC subway stations to go on a rampage, indirectly making them responsible for all of Samael's kills.
  • He killed Agent Clay (who was Hellboy's closest human friend and guardian) and faked his own death to infiltrate the BPRD.
  • Once inside the BPRD HQ, he would go to on to kill Professor Broom (Hellboy's adoptive father).
  • While he kills Professor Broom (who was already dying of cancer) quickly and painlessly, it's not portrayed differently from any of his other kills as he generally prefers efficiency over sadism.
  • Once the BPRD arrive at Rasputin's mausoleum, he attempts to kill Director Manning only to be stopped by Hellboy.
  • He attempts to throw Hellboy and Director Manning into a spike trap only to be thrown in by Hellboy in return.
  • Despite never speaking, he is shown to have a cunning, ruthless and sadomasochistic personality.
  • While loyal to Grigori Rasputin, his loyalty is too vague to call redeeming.

Trivia[]

  • Curiously, he's one of two del Toro villains (the other being the Pale Man) who does not count based on their actions in the film alone and was only approved due to additional exposition from a tie-in comic.
  • He was supposed to return as the main antagonist of the cancelled third Hellboy film. Whether or not it would affect his PE status is unknown, though most likely it would not change or even make him worse.
  • As of now, he is the only Hellboy villain to be PE.
