“ | I doubt that I need an introduction, but just in case, I am Junko Enoshima, the True Ultimate Despair... and yes, all the horrible stories you've heard about me are indeed true! | „ |
~ Junko Enoshima. |
Junko Enoshima is the main antagonist of the Danganronpa franchise.
A student labeling herself as the Ultimate Fashionista, it is soon revealed that she is the founder of the organization known as "Ultimate Despair", a terrorist organization responsible for "The Worst, Most Despair-Inducing Incident in the History of Mankind" and also the true identity of the bear that oversees the game, Monokuma.
A girl who is completely obsessed with despair, Junko is hellbent on causing misery across the world so that she can satiate her sadomasochistic feeling towards the despair that she has caused. She is also the twin sister and killer of Mukuro Ikusaba and arch-nemesis of Makoto Naegi and Kyoko Kirigiri.
In the English versions, she was voiced by Amanda Celine Miller and Erin Fitzgerald in the games, and by Jamie Marchi in the anime. In Japanese, she was voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi and the late Sayaka Kanda in the stage play versions.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
In General/Background[]
- She is ultimately the one responsible for everything that happened in the series as all of the incidents happening were all only thanks to her influence towards everyone leading to countless death for the entire series.
- While the story present her several freudian excuse to explain her actions, they don't hold up for several reasons:
- Although it's implied by her sister and herself that they grew up in poverty and felt despair at their own birth, it's never elaborated upon that much and she isn't particularly affected by it.
- It is heavily implied that Junko Enoshima’s life was extremely dull and predictable due to her Ultimate Analyst talent. Her ability to instantly understand and predict nearly everything and everyone around her left her feeling unfulfilled. This monotony drove her to embrace despair—an ideology rooted in chaos, destruction, and tragedy—as a way to escape her boredom. While this provides some context for her actions, it does not excuse them in any way. Izuru Kamakura, who also possesses superhuman analytical abilities, questions Junko’s ideology a few times, which suggests that Junko should have been capable of questioning it herself. Additionally, while she claims despair is unpredictable, due to her true talent, she very likely knows how it will turn out in the end, making her actions illogical and pointless, and more so done simply for her own enjoyment and possibly as a coping mechanism.
- Nearly caused the entire extinction of humanity by enacting an event known as "The Worst, Most Despair-Inducing Incident in the History of Mankind/The Biggest Most Awful Most Tragic Event in Human History".
- While undeniably completely insane, Junko doesn't suffer from moral agency issues, as she knows the difference between right and wrong well enough to revel in doing wrong. She also has the mental ability to carefully plan her atrocities before going through with them.
- Despite having several comedic moments where she makes jokes as herself and as Monokuma and has laughable switches between her personality out of boredom, none of those detract from her actions and they just show how insane she is.
- Even if she claimed to love the Warriors of Hope, she actually never loved them and she just manipulated them to kill all the adults and make the Demon Hunting killing game. She also doesn't care about Monaca Towa, even if she did a lot of work with her and called her "Big Sis Junko".
- While Junko is capable of caring about others, feeling remorse for her crimes and having empathy toward others such as her classmates, her sister Mukuro Ikusaba and her love interest Yasuke Matsuda, she ultimately believes that harming people close to her will bring her greater despair and the more she loves them the more she will revel in their despair thus suberting any redeeming qualties she may have had.
- In fact, due to "loving" her so much, she abused and bullied her sister throughout her life.
- This is also the reason why she forced her classmates in Class 78th to participate in the Killing Game; she loved them all so she forced them to experience their own despair by her own hand.
Danganronpa 3 and Danganronpa Killer Killer[]
- Committed numerous bombings and killings just to satisfy her bloodlust as seen in her first appearance where she bombed a taxi that took her to an airport.
- Attempted to kill Mukuro with an ice pick and grenade. Mukuro understandably blocked the ice pick and threw the grenade outside the window, causing the grenade to hit a car and explode on the highway.
- After being reunited with her sister, she will ask her to kill a whole middle school with a knife. The scene was very graphic and the event was so traumatic that it inspired the only two survivors of the attack to become serial killers.
- Tortured one of the Hope’s Peak Academy trustees by tying him up with his head through a bunny cut-out. She casually ate some food before using her spoon to take out his eyeball as he let out a muffled scream, presumably killing him. It’s later revealed she did this so she can bypass a door that required a retina scan to get to the Ultimate Hope, Izuru Kamakura.
- Manipulated Izuru into aiding her plans by inviting him to the Student Council Killing Game.
- Learned the brainwashing techniques of the Ultimate Animator, Ryota Mitarai, and kidnapped Ultimate Nurse Mikan Tsumiki to turn her into the first Ultimate Despair.
- Forced the Student Council to participate in a sadistic killing game.
- After the killing game is done, 15 students have died while Junko recorded it from behind the scenes. In addition, she uses the recording to incriminate Izuru Kamukura.
- Leaked the video of the Student Council Killing Game onto the internet, which drove the Reserve Course students into madness and resulted in them staging a violent revolution called "The Parade".
- After Ryota found out about the recorded video of the Student Council Killing Game, Junko proceeded to enter his dorm and kick Mikan for fun as Mikan was trying to seduce Ryota and then blackmailed him by threatening to come after his classmates if he ran away and essentially held him hostage. Eventually, Ryota does run away but is chased down and surrounded by brainwashed Reserve Course members. Junko made Ryota feel more guilty due to him accidently helping Junko with the brainwashing because she took advantage of his love for animating.
- Made one of the Reserve Course students kill himself by slicing his neck with a saw in front of Chisa Yukizome, who couldn’t help him as she was held back by Mukuro.
- Had Mukuro give the kind-hearted Chisa a lobotomy while she was still conscious to turn her into an Ultimate Despair.
- After manipulating Ryota and making him run away in fear and guilt, she blackmails Juzo Sakakura who confronted her about her association with the Student Council Killing Game. She manipulated him to tell Kyosuke Munakata that she was innocent and disassociate her from the Student Council Killing Game. If he didn’t, she would expose Juzo’s romantic attraction to Kyosuke, which he was heavily insecure about.
- Used the despair-filled Mikan and Chisa to lure Class 77-B into her lair, where she converted them all into Ultimate Despairs by having them watch their class representative, Ultimate Gamer Chiaki Nanami, be tortured to death through a booby-trapped dungeon. She even gave Chiaki false hope of winning only to take it away from her and leave her to die.
- After using the brainwashed Reserve Course students to murder the Main Course students, she used the suicide video to brainwash the Reserve Course to commit suicide to find them useless and to feel despair.
- Threw a wrench at Makoto Naegi as an attempt to kill him, but misses due to his luck and pretending to be caring towards him.
- Even when she was at the afterlife theater with Chisa, she still showed no remorse for her catastrophic actions, saying that she didn't care since both of them were already dead.
Danganronpa Zero[]
- Ask Yasuke to erase her memory as Junko and created new identity as Ryoko Otonashi, which he agrees to protect Junko and their friends from herself.
- After regaining her memory, she kills him by stabbing him to death.
- The worst part is that when he is at death's door, she reveals that she killed his mother (although this could be a lie just to make Yasuke feel the last despair, but still). After he loses consciousness, she kicks his corpse until he is unrecognizable, to feel more despair for herself. This reveals that she never wants to be cured from her despair and only subject herself to the erasure of her memories to later use it on her classmates.
- While she sheds tears over the sadness of killing Yasuke, this is not redeemable because she does it to feel despair and felt absolutely no remorse.
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc[]
- She soon wiped her classmates' memories and killed the headmaster, Jin Kirigiri, who was also the father of her classmate, Kyoko, in order to instigate the Killing Game and create despair.
- Told the students that she will harm their loved ones if they don't start killing each other.
- Murdered her own sister in order to make an example out of her and to feel despair herself before vandalized her body by later blowing her up.
- Warned the students about her gaining their secrets and planning to expose them, leading to another murder.
- Made some of her classmates in Class 78th to kill one another and have them executed during the Killing Game.
- Made Sayaka Maizono attempt to kill Leon Kuwata out of fear of losing her friends and career, in which, in turn, he kills her instead, leading to his execution by being pummeled to death by baseballs shot out of a pitching machine as he claims it was out of self-defense.
- Made Mondo Owada kill Chihiro Fujisaki out of envy and his secret about his brother's death before he got executed by spinning him around in a cage on a motorcycle, which electrocuted and liquified him, and ate his remains through Monokuma.
- Made Celestia Ludenberg manipulate Hifumi Yamada to kill Kiyotaka Ishimaru and then killed him herself as a way to use wealth to blind Celestia into murdering for her dreams before she got executed by making her stand on a stake to be burnt like a witch before crushing her with a firetruck instead.
- Exposed Sakura Ogami's secret in order to turn everyone against her and forced Sakura to commit murder to continue the Killing Game, causing Sakura to commit suicide by poisoning herself.
- She manipulated Aoi Asahina by replacing Sakura's suicide note, causing her to attempt to falsely vote herself to be the blackened in order to attempt to kill everyone else, including herself.
- She then had Alter Ego destroyed in order to prevent him from helping the rest of the survivors.
- Attempted to kill Kyoko by framing her for Mukuro’s death but then switched to Makoto at the last second when that failed, but luckily his execution was interrupted by Alter Ego.
- At the end of the 6th Class Trial, she made one last attempt to make her surviving classmates fall into despair by saying that the air was deadly and saying that their loved ones were gone.
- Although she kills herself in the end as promised, it's not out of honor to keep her word but just so she could feel despair. Her death is also played for complete satisfaction due to how horrible and awful all of her crimes are.
- Even after her death, she still left a huge impact on everyone in the series, especially on the Class 77-B students, where all of them ended up killing each other due to the AI she created so she could take over their bodies to continue her reign of terror.
Trivia[]
- Junko is a rare case of a Pure Evil villain that actually loves her friends and family, but still qualifies because she will discard them if it brings her more despair. The more she loves a person, the more despair she will give to them and herself when she hurts and/or kills them.
- This is essentially the same mentality of Isaac Ray Peram Westcott from Date A Live.
- She is also one of the only Pure Evil villains to technically have her page on the Heroes Wiki, as she got amnesia and briefly became a heroic character before regaining her memories. It's because in her case, her amnesiac personna is treated as a different character like her (unlike Light Yagami who has a similar case).
- One of her poses is the same of Dio Brando, another Pure Evil, from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure; she also says his catchphrase, "Useless, useless, useless," during a Bullet Time Battle.
- Ironically, Junko’s actor in the stage versions, Sayaka Kanda, voiced Kaede Akamatsu, who is Pure Good.
- Junko and her twin sister Mukuro both are technically the "nightmare" before Christmas. This is from the fact they are both born on December 24th, the day before Christmas, and the fact both twins are PE and NPE respectively, which these types of villains can be considered living nightmares literally and/or metaphorically.
