Judge Turpin, also known as Lord Turpin, is the main antagonist of the 1979 musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and the 2007 live-action film of the same name. He is the corrupt judge who ruined Sweeney Todd's life.
In the film, he was portrayed by the late Alan Rickman, who also played Hans Gruber in Die Hard, the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Joe in Help! I'm a Fish.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?
- Framed Benjamin Barker for a crime he didn't commit and later had him exiled to Australia, probably for dead.
- Had Beadle Bamford lure Johanna to his party and raped in front an entire crowd. Lucy would later try to poison herself, she would lose her mind and become a beggar on the street.
- Stole Johanna from Benjamin and Lucy.
- Had Anthony Hope beaten up and threatened for wanting to marry a teenage Johanna.
- Sentenced a child to hang by the neck until he is dead and later asked Beadle if the child committed any crime, meaning he wanted the kid out of the way.
- Though Beadle is genuinely loyal to Turpin, he doesn't show the same back.
- Planned to marry Johanna, which is disgusting because she is not only his adopted daughter but he is also decades older than her.
- Had Johanna sent to an asylum for rejecting him and refused to release her unless she marries him.
- Overall, he is responsible for the events of the film since Benjamin Barker became the titular serial killer because of Turpin framing him and ruining his life.
Trivia
- He and Big Boy are the only Stephen Sondheim villains to be Pure Evil.
