“ | Jonathan Gavrilovic got away with crimes scott-free, and to this day remains a respected figure of the Canadian government. No one ever found out that he was the nephew of the head of the Serbian mafia. No one ever figured out that Jonathan and his uncle created Total Drama Island as a way to make millions of dollars off selling illegal footage to the black market. No one ever found out that all Jonathan had to do was get his uncle to produce counterfeit army uniforms and paint Serbian helicopters to fool the naive families of the contestants. No one knew how easy it was. | „ |
~ The closing narration describing how Gavrilovic gets away with his crimes |
Jonathan Gavrilovic is the overarching antagonist of the Total Drama fanfiction Despair Island by Knifez. He is a corrupt politician who abuses his relationships to the Canadian government and a Serbian mafia boss to help create the death game called Total Drama.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He was already a corrupt member of the Canadian government, with connections to a powerful Serbian mob family.
- He personally green lit Chris McLean’s idea of Total Drama, knowing full well the fact 22 teenagers will get brutally killed. Despite this, Gavrilovic lies to Chris about the game’s legality, keeping him in the dark in order to scape goat him later on.
- Despite initially seeming horrified about the idea of Chris killing teenagers for the game, spitting out his coffee, this was simply out of a fear of getting caught by the authorities, and when Chris mentions the monetary gain, Gavrilovic immediately gets on board.
- Disguising his Serbian men as Canadian Government, he orchestrated the mass kidnapping of 22 Canadian teenagers, forcing their parents to sign fake contacts while strong arming them into silence and letting their kids participate.
- Hired Zolkoff, Chef Hatchet, interns and the cameramen to help Chris keep the campers from causing trouble and gave them access to the island of Camp Wawanakwa as well as any other resource Chris needed to make his show.
- As “The Producer” Gavrilovic even participated at times, coming up with the idea of the electronic gallery in the mess hall, in which shows off the corpses of the eliminated contestants simply as an incentive and to mentally mess with the surviving contestants.
- He is responsible for the brutal deaths of 19 contestants within Camp Wawakwa, in increasingly brutal and obscene ways committed by both Chris and Zolkoff.
- Due to his lying towards Chris McLean, this leads to him, as well as Chef, Zolkoff, the cameramen and interns getting overrun by the police and all arrested for their crimes. Gavrilovic then proceeds to have Zolkoff execute Chris in prison for him to keep silent and presumably has Zolkoff escape prison, and relocates Chef Hatchet to Europe in order for the feds to not get any information out of him.
- He ends up getting away with all his actions due to having the Canadian Government force to bury the evidence of what happened, leading to Gavrilovic staying a respected member of the Canadian Government as he goes on to sell Total Drama on the black market with his uncle, leaving him completely rich with millions of dollars.
- While his ties to the Serbian mafia through his uncle who is the boss, there's nothing that indicates that he cares about him, and could be that Gavrilovic just see him as a valuable tool for his plans.
Trivia[]
- Despair Island was originally intended to be the first installment of a fanfic Total Drama trilogy, with the contestants of Revenge of the Island and Pahkitew Island starring in the fanfic's versions of Total Drama Action and Total Drama World Tour and Jonathan Gravrilovic hiring Chris to host the deadly competition once more. These plans ultimately changed and the ending of Despair Island was rewritten to have Gavrilovic's operation foiled yet him getting away with his crimes at the end (albeit a "What If..." one-shot was posted in regards to how the second season would have developed). Had these plans not changed, this would have made Gavrilovic even worse.
- Retrospectively, Despair Island author Knifez wished he should have scrapped the Serbian Mafia plot and have rather set the story in an alternate universe where production of snuff content is deemed acceptable over setting the story in what seems to be a dystopian future only to then reveal that the show takes place in a normal world under the legal system's noses. Had the fic been set in a dystopian future where seeing people kill each other is live television was deemed acceptable, then Gavirlovic most likely wouldn't have counted as Pure Evil due to been unable to stand out in such a dark setting due to the System Standards.
