No! I will not go yet! My... legacy! I... must... preserve it!
~ Jeremiah as he is dragged off to Hell in the "Good Ending".

Jeremiah Vermander is the main antagonist of the 2022 indie horror comedy videogame Midnight Maid Night. He's the former head of the corrupt Vermander family, former owner of the mansion where the game takes place and the father of Joseph.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He was overall a cruel, corrupt and extremely narcissistic person that abused his servants.
  • Judging by a pentagram in a room of his mansion (and also by what's shown in The Vermander Curse regarding the Vermander family and the supernatural), it's very likely that he practiced demonic rituals.
  • He burnt some of his servants alive because they cooked him bad meals.
  • When a snow blizzard arrived in town, he sent his faithful servant Cornelius outside just to get a newspaper. The worst part is that he didn't even have the decency to give him a winter coat, which caused Cornelius to freeze to death.
  • He killed Agatha, the woman his son Joseph loved and intended to marry, because she was a servant, shoving her corpse beneath the floors of the mansion.
  • He comes back from the dead to kill his own son Joseph because the latter angered him by trying to clear their family's name by helping the poor, lowering the prices of the stuff that they sold and returning some "liberated" artifacts.
  • While his murders are never shown onscreen, he doesn't suffer too much from offscreen villainy since the oven containing the ashes of the people he burnt is shown and Joseph, Cornelius and Agatha haunt the mansion and can't find peace after death because of him.
  • He tries to kill the Midnight Maids, and succeeds in doing so in the "Bad Ending", which causes them to haunt the mansion as well.
  • While his fate in the "Unresolved Ending" is unknown, it's likely that he kept haunting the mansion and - knowing him - he likely killed the new owner.
  • While he wants his son to stay with him, this doesn't come off as genuine care for Joseph but simply him wishing to control his son, probably because he sees him as nothing more than a part of his legacy, which seems to be the only thing he truly cares about due to his narcissism.
  • After the souls of Joseph and Agatha ascend and leave the mansion in the "Good Ending", he gets angry at the Midnight Maids, saying that it's their fault and that he'll make them pay.
  • He doesn't show any gratitude towards Cornelius when the latter finally brings him his newspaper, instead insulting him.
  • He stands out from other Zed_Technician villains not only due to his brutality and lack of redeeming qualities, but also because he's always taken seriously and has a clear morality, and while Thoth and Sekhmet attempt to destroy humankind as a whole, they have more resources than Jeremiah since they're deities.
    • Another thing that makes him stand out from most other Zed_Technician villains is that his kill count isn't completely dependent on the various endings, and most of it is pre-established.

Trivia[]

  • Due to haunting the manor that his relative J.P used to live in, it’s possible they interacted and, given Jeremiah’s personality, likely played a role in making J.P the greedy sadist he was pre redemption. If this was confirmed, this would make Jeremiah even worse.
