Damn you! Damn you. I still exist!
~ Jeremiah Compson's breakdown and possibly last words.

Jeremiah Compson is a minor antagonist in Red Dead Redemption 2, serving as the main antagonist of the side mission "The Iniquites of History".

He is a former slave catcher whom the player meets in Rhodes, desiring to return to his old days and wanting to get the things he used while capturing, beating and selling slaves as mementos. Though Arthur Morgan and John Marston initially help him under the impression he is a victim of the system, it doesn't take them much time to discover Compson's past.

He was voiced by Chuck Montgomery.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Captures, brutally tortures and sells slaves for money. It's even shown in his ledger that he was willing to do the same to a child, as well as having dozens of victims.
  • A letter in his basement reveals that he once whipped a slave 50 times a day to the point of near death, and kept his writing so he could mock the slave.
  • He sometimes would throw the slaves he captured into his house's well and keep them there for days.
  • It's implied that after he lost his job as a slave catcher due to the end of the American Civil War that he tried to teach his grandson how to become a slave catcher like he was.
  • It is strongly hinted that the reason why he was fired from the Central Union Railroad Company was due to his racist treatment of his coworkers.
  • While in the present he became a pathetic alcoholic desperately trying to bring back his days of glory, the story doesn't paint him for sympathy, and when the player finds out about his past, they show absolutely no sympathy towards him and tell Jeremiah that he deserved to have his job taken from him and his legacy ruined. The game even rewards the player with honor points for killing him.
  • When Arthur/John threw his ledger to a fire, Jeremiah tried to shoot them, and only failed to because of his pistol no longer working.
  • Although he is shown to have a family, he seems to only see them as a way to flaunt his ego, as even in a family picture he only kept it due to it complimenting his work, and doesn't reference them in the presence, only wishing to get his job and "pride" back. Also his son Rance Compson states that he and his wife don't want anything to do with him due to try to teach their son into becoming a slave catcher, which was something Rance and his son don't want to as a career.
    • It's also mentioned that he took the job of slave catcher after his father and grandfather, although nothing hints he cared for them.
  • Despite the high Heinous Standards of the Red Dead franchise, Jeremiah is still able to stand out as a side mission character with barely any resources, with him having a suprising high count of tortures to make up for them.
