Human nature is to blame! Why must people be tempted by that which is explicitly forbidden...?
~ Saturn to Dr. Vegapunk about his research on the Void Century, while holding Jewlery Bonney.
Think of human lives as nothing more than insects. They will always breed more to make up for any loss!!
~ Saturn to Doberman in One Piece chapter 1090.
Vegapunk, your betrayal is a heavy blow... Now, which one of you is to die first? Tell me the cruelest order possible. I want you to die cursing yourself for daring to cross the World Government.
~ Saturn taunting Vegapunk and Bonney for defying him.

Jaygarcia Saturn is one of the main antagonists of the One Piece franchise. One of the Five Elders and Imu's subordinates, Saturn was assigned as the Warrior God Department of Science and Defense. He used his position to perform unethical experiments on Ginny, one of the former leaders of the Revolutionary Army as well as her daughter, Jewelry Bonney. He is the arch-nemesis of Bartholomew Kuma, Nika and Jewelry Bonney.

He is voiced by Keiichi Noda. In English, he was originally voiced by the late Jerry Russell and now J.B. Edwards.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Despite professing loyalty to Imu, it was only because his master is vastly more powerful than him and could kill him at any time they wish.
    • This was proven when Saturn went behind Imu's back by experimenting on Emet and discarding him instead of destroying him as Imu ordered.
  • Despite being cordial with the other Elders, it's only because of pragmatism as well as the other Elders being equals in power to him.
  • While he worked with the Marines and the Warlords to maintain the balance of power, it was to suppress any resistance to the World Government and his power.
  • Saturn despised humanity, often considering them as insects and even encouraging the Marines to look at them like that, thus contributing to many of them being ruthless when pursuing their version of Justice.
  • Unlike other major One Piece villains, who have some comedic moments, even Kaido who has some humor, There is absolutely nothing funny about Saturn, as everything about him and his cruelty towards humanity is played for horror, and is not redeemable or even sympathetic at all whatsoever.

Background[]

  • Saturn oversaw the Native Hunting in the God Valley, which was an event where Celestial Dragons hunted and killed the natives of the island for sport.
  • Attacked Kuma when he tried to escape from the island, despite the former being a young boy.
    • When Kuma told him he and Nika will free everyone being hunted by the Celestial Dragons, Saturn taunted him that there is no hope.
  • He, along with his fellow Elders, manipulated Harald the king of Elbaph if he killed Rocks D. Xebec the Government will make a peace negotiations with Elbaph. But it turns out to be a facade as Saturn and the World Government never intended for peace with the Giants of Elbaph but rather attempting to conquer Elbaph.
  • He, along with his fellow Elders, ordered the total destruction of the island Ohara to stop Clover from telling the world what they learnt about the Void Century.
    • He berates Akainu for failing to kill Nico Robin, calling him an "impotent fool".
  • Experimented on Ginny after she was captured by the World Government, leading to her contracting Sapphire Scales. After she contracted this disease, Ginny experienced a slow and painful death.
    • While Bonney also inherited this disease, Saturn didn't care and used it to coerce Kuma for further military power.
    • Saturn states that he experimented on other people as well, and that they also contracted the Sapphire Scales, which implies that these people also died due to Saturn’s experiments.
  • Making Bonney's life a misery, Saturn told her that he was the one who experimented on her and her mother Ginny.
  • Saturn gave Kuma an ultimatum, if he wants his daughter's illness to be cured, he will have to serve the World Government, and let Dr. Vegapunk turn him into a cyborg. Kuma agreed which led to him turning more and more robotic as time went by.
    • Kuma turning himself into an attack dog for the World Government led to the creation of the Pacifistas, a powerful military force that the government created to further consolidate their power and to suppress dissent.
    • He ordered Vegapunk to install a self-destruct button on Kuma just in case he betrayed the World Government.
    • If Kuma dared to step out line, he also threatened him with making his daughter Bonney, (a child), a slave for the rest of her life.
    • Saturn also forbade Kuma and Bonney from communicating with each other after he made Kuma a Warlord.

Present[]

  • Participated in killing Cobra due to him learning about Imu's existence.
  • Participated in framing Sabo for Cobra's murder as well as to deal a blow to the Revolutionary Army.
  • Intended to kidnap Nefertari Vivi to give her away to Imu.
  • On Imu's orders, he made preparations to destroy the Kingdom of Lulusia using an Ancient Weapon in order to test the capabilities of the Mother Flame invented by Vegapunk.
  • Arranged the Egghead Incident by turning York, one of Vegapunk's satellites against him, so that Imu could seize the Mother Flame, He also ordered Lucci and others to kill Vegapunk due to researching the Void Century.
  • Tried to kill the weakened Luffy only to be saved by Franky.
  • When Luffy is eating to regain his strength, Saturn ordered the Marines to bind him with Sea stone shackles, only for Luffy to escape their grasps.
  • Ordered the destruction of an evacuation ship full of researchers from Egghead because they may have known about the Void Century, which thankfully failed due to Dorry and Brogy's interference.
  • Ordered a Buster Call to destroy Egghead island, in an attempt to kill Vegapunk, his allies, and the Straw Hat Pirates, which also endangered all of the marines that were in the island at the time.
  • Summoned his fellow Elders in both attempts to kill Luffy, Bonney, Kuma, and their allies, and to stop the pre-recorded broadcast that was sent by Vegapunk (although the Elders were too late despite destroying the Transmitting Den Den Mushi)
  • Killed a lower-ranking Marine by exploding his head when he saw Saturn.
  • Ordered the Marines to kill the Egghead residents but failed due to the Giant Warrior Pirates.
  • Attempted to kill Jewelry Bonney at the hands of the Pacifista, sadistically noting the sheer irony of Bonney being killed by robots made in the image of her father.
    • When Kuma came, Saturn tried to stomp on Bonney, only for Kuma to take the blow instead. He still attempted to kill Bonney because she had the same authority over Kuma-based Pacifista.
  • When realizing Vegapunk never installed the self-destruct mechanism into Kuma, Saturn swore to kill both Kuma and Vegapunk when declaring they were no longer any use to him.
  • Assaulted Luffy with his eye attack, though it failed to do anything.
  • Attempted to kill Dorry and Brogy for interfering in his attempt to kill Luffy.
  • Tried to kill both Catarina Devon and Van Augur when learning Blackbeard's intention to take over the world, though they escaped with Augur's warping ability after Devon completed her mission of touching Saturn.
  • Stabbed Vegapunk with his leg for secretly installing Bonney's name to the "Authority Chip" even higher than the Five Elders.
  • Tried to kill Nico Robin when confronted with her in person.
  • Made his final attempt to kill Luffy, Bonney, Kuma, and the Giants, but he was intercepted by Emet (when using Joy Boy's stored Conqueror's Haki).
  • Severely injured Vice-Admiral Doberman for questioning if the broadcast that Vegapunk played spoke the truth or not.
  • Saturn was able to keep York as an ally so she could continue making the Mother Flame for Imu as a means of increasing the World Government’s power.
  • Due to all of the atrocities that he committed, his death is completely played for satisfaction.
    • While he begged Imu for mercy, it was only due to fear of losing his immortality, and as a result, it's not played for sympathy.
    • While the other Elders seemed disturbed by his death and the fact that Garling replaced him, the scene doesn’t paint Saturn in a sympathetic or positive light as they are most likely afraid of Imu doing the same to them rather than feeling sorry for Saturn.

Trivia[]

  • Saturn is the only member of the Five Elders so far to be Pure Evil. It is not known if the others will count, but his replacement, Figarland Garling, is likely to qualify.
  • He is the archnemesis of Bartholomew Kuma, who is likely to qualify as Pure Good, and the entire reason behind the pain he suffered.
