~ Jack returns to get revenge on John. |
Jack Shepard, also known as The Nightingale Killer, is the main antagonist of the 2000 science fiction thriller film Frequency. He is a serial killer who targets nurses, while hiding under the persona of a cop.
He was portrayed by Shawn Doyle.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- No matter what timeline, he murdered three nurses and his teenage neighbor, Mary Finelli. The only reason he stopped was because in the original timeline, he ended up dying due to malpractice.
- In the second timeline, because Frank Sullivan didn't die in the fire, his wife Julia was there at the hospital to prevent Jack's death.
- Jack shows no gratitude for this and instead makes her his sixth victim.
- Due to not dying, Jack goes on to claim ten victims, counting the four he already killed. Had it not been for John and Frank's intervention, he would have gotten away with his crimes.
- If killing a woman that saved his life wasn't bad enough, he also murders his own mother using a completely different method so that cops wouldn't link it to the Nightingale murders.
- For the Nightingale murders, he didn't just strangle them with a cord. He also raped them and stole their jewelry to keep as trophies. This is later shown in the final timeline when Frank finds a box with five bagged pieces of jewelry along with newspaper clippings of the murders.
- When Frank Sullivan and his son, John (from 30 years in the future) begin to try and prevent Jack's murders; Jack attacks Frank in the bathroom, beating him unconscious and attempting to strangle him. Luckily, two guys walk in and prevent the murder, but Jack still takes Frank's driver's license and plants it on Sissy Clark's body to frame him.
- Breaks into Sissy Clark's apartment and rapes/murders her.
- Pins Frank for suspicion and gets him arrested. He then attempts to kill Frank before he can prove his innocence, only being stopped because his fellow officers invited him to watch the world series. This bought Frank enough time to outwit Jack and escape the police department.
- He chases after Frank and attempts to kill him, but Frank overpowers him.
- After Frank exposes Jack as the Nightingale Killer; Jack sneaks into Frank's house, attacks him, handcuffs him to a door, and tries to rape Julia before attempting to kill her. When Johnny walks in on this and Julia scars his face, Jack knocks her out and turns his attention towards Johnny.
- When Frank threatens him at gun-point, Jack grabs Johnny and uses him as a meat shield. When Frank doesn't put the shotgun down, he threatens to snap the 6 year old Johnny's neck. Jack finally fled after Julia attacked him and Frank shot his hand off.
- In 1999, while Frank was fending off the 1969 Shepard, Jack returns to kill the now adult John as revenge for "Stealing his life."
- He nearly succeeds in killing John, only being stopped after Frank altered the timeline so he would live to the present day. The now aging Frank in 1999 shoots Jack and saves John.
- Has clear moral agency and awareness of what he's doing.
- Shows no love or care for anyone, shows no redeeming qualities, and has no Freudian Excuse; though this is because we don't see one.
Trivia[]
- While it's never outright stated, one of the files for Jack's victims labels the case as a rape homicide. This, combined with several other factors prove that Jack is a serial rapist.
