| ~ IT singing as Matty before revealing itself to the 1962 Losers Club. |
IT, also more commonly known by its main form as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, is the titular main antagonist of Andy Muschietti's IT franchise.
Like in the original novel and 1990 counterparts, IT is an ancient, otherworldly, and eldritch cosmic entity that takes the form of one's worst terrors (particularly of children) before feeding on them. Since crashlanding onto Earth, IT terrorized a region that would become the township of Derry, Maine, all while taking the form of a dancing clown named Pennywise in modern times. It would become the archenemy of the Losers Club (primarily Bill Denbrough, who seeks to avenge his deceased younger brother Georgie), as the group was formed in response to IT's various atrocities in the 1989 cycle.
It as Pennywise was portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, who also played the Marquis de Gramont in John Wick: Chapter 4 and Count Orlok in Nosferatu. In the Latin American Spanish dub, he is voiced by Carlos Hernandez, who also voices William Afton in the Five Nights at Freddy's film series, Eon in Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, and Starscream in Transformers: Cyberverse.
What Makes It Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- It is overall a sadistic, manipulative, and bloodthirsty abomination who has committed incalculable atrocities presumably since the beginning of time itself; IT particularly stands out due to engaging in them in an extremely sadistic manner.
- This version of IT is arguably more cruel and sadistic than its novel and miniseries counterparts, as some of its murders are shown in full detail, such as Georgie getting his arm bitten off and Dean's blood getting splattered onto the mirror. Not to mention how cruelly and sadistically it taunts its enemies and victims, mainly the Losers Club (mostly Bill) and many kids it killed, before attacking or killing them.
- While it is stated that IT needs to eat humans in order to survive, this does not serve as a sympathetic motive or reasonable excuse for its actions. IT intentionally goes out of its way to sadistically torment its prey instead of simply scaring and killing them, all while ensuring that its victims suffer excruciatingly slow demises.
- This is emphasized by the fact that the corpses of IT's victims are mostly intact while rotting and serve as a way to intimidate future victims, further emphasizing its sadistic aims beyond mere survival.
- Additionally, throughout the movies and the series IT: Welcome to Derry, it showed a particular taste in using the appearance of zombies or rotting corpses (specially from its victims) to taunt, torment or manipulate more victims, as it did with the forms of Georgie, Patrick, Mrs. Kersh, Richie, Stanley, Lily's father and friends, Uncle Sam, decapitated heads in an aquarium and a zombified moose with whom it taunted the natives in the past as the galloo. Its taste for death and decay is also enphathized when Matty is being taunted by the car's family during the spelling, when the "mother" asks to spell "necrosis", "maggots" and "cadaver". This makes sense since these things are mostly repulsive and, as well death in general, object of fear.
- There is no evidence to suggest It is made of evil, as It has proven to have a moral agency due to how sadistic it is in its actions by taking on its victims' worst fears.
- An example of this is shown when Bill Denbrough tells it that it can just take him since he's actually there now (unlike when Georgie died which he still blames himself for as an adult), it sadistically chooses to ignore his request and instead makes him relive his traumatic childhood by killing another little boy named Dean in front of him.
- It has no absolute care for its pawns Ingrid Kersh (1935 to 1962) and Henry Bowers (1989 to 2016) as it only uses them for personal gain, thinking of them of further means to an end.
- What's even worse is that it uses their respective traumas (Ingrid's fear of her father abandoning her and Henry's father abusing him) to manipulate them into being its pawns. When its pawns have expired their usefulness, it'll either expose them to the Deadlights to drive them insane or kill them
- While It is willing to spare its minions if they help it with completing its feeding cycles, it's not out of honor or genuine care as it's sparing them to use them for another cycle 27 years later.
- Despite having comedic moments as Pennywise, such as its childish-like behavior, dark jokes on victims, its dancing scene and sometimes acting as a literal clown, most of its humor is dark and only makes it even creepier with its crimes being played surprisingly horridly, meaning it's to be taken as a dark comedy.
- It claims to be an "eater of worlds", implying that it has killed billions if not trillions of living beings in the past and leaving their planets without any life left.
Background[]
- Like its original novel counterpart, IT caused a massive cataclysmic event upon its arrival to Earth, killing countless Indigenous nations that either attempted to defeat it with the Ritual of Chüd or otherwise imprison it within what would eventually become Derry, Maine.
- According to Mike's grandfather, Leroy Hanlon, Derry has been cursed ever since It arrived there, meaning that it is probably responsible for every single tragedy in the town, whether directly or indirectly.
- It is responsible for the disappearance of the original 91 settlers in Derry even though there was no sign of an Indian invasion, meaning that It likely devoured them.
- Among the tragedies that befell Derry because of It were the explosion of the Kitchen Ironworks in 1908, which resulted in 112 casualties, the Bradley Gang Shootout in 1935, and the destruction of the Black Spot in 1962, which was perpetrated by a racist cult and resulted in many deaths.
- Also, like its literary counterpart, it awakens every 27 years to devour the people of Derry (mostly the children for being an easier target).
- While it rarely attacks adults (aside from the Losers Club in Chapter Two), it still manages to manipulate most of them into being ignorant about the events it causes throughout the town, something that it's other counterparts also did.
- In the flashback scene in Chapter Two, It transforms into a bird-like creature, a wendigo , and a skinwalker and brutally kills a native then kills the other natives alongside the ones that defeated It in The Ritual of Chüd presumably in the future.
It: Welcome to Derry[]
- It turned into a slender old man and attempted to kill a young Francis Shaw only to be stopped by Rose. This resulted in Shaw later working to release and unleash Pennywise in the USA, endangering countless lives.
- It murdered Bob Gray, who worked as a clown under the name of "Pennywise the Dancing Clown" using the form of a kid to use his identity of the clown after realizing that many kids got close to Gray during his shows, essentially using Pennywise as its favorite form from there on out, while also making his daughter, the already mother-orphaned Ingrid, utterly orphan at early age.
- It took advantage of Ingrid's suffering with her father's loss and has been manipulating her by using her desire to see "her father" again in order to get more victims. This turned Ingrid into a sociopath who has been committed several atrocities to lure Pennywise (thinking IT was her father being possessed), like luring children to be killed and eaten by and causing the Blackspot massacre, actions whom were congratulated by Pennywise so that he would keep her illusion and make her bring him more victims.
- In 1935, it chased Ingrid and a child named Mabel in the basement of Juniper Hill and killed the latter when they got separated. It then manipulated the former into believing it was actually her father, Bob Gray, which would lead her to sacrificing kids to it just so she could see him again.
- It kidnaps Matty by taking on the form of a family in a car, with said family getting progressively more twisted and the mom giving birth to a mutant baby and killed him.
- When Teddy's father tells him about how the Nazis would make lampshades using their skin (they're Jewish), It later appears to him that night as a lamp with that exact lampshade.
- It brutally kills Phil and Teddy in the movie theater and would later eat the latter's brain out of his skull in the sewers, while Susie was kept alive until she eventually died from blood loss from having her arm ripped off by Pennywise's baby form.
- It appears to Ronnie as her mother who died at childbirth, blaming Ronnie for her death and attempting to eat her by dragging her via an umbilical cord to its stomach, which is filled with sharp teeth.
- It appears to Lily in the form of pieces of her dead father in pickle jars (as her father died in an accident at a pickle jar factory which she blames herself for), which would then reassemble into a squid-like form and presumably attempt to sexually assault Lily.
- It chases Lily, Ronnie, Will, and Rich through a cemetery as the ghosts of Teddy and Susie as the ground split beneath them.
- It makes Marge hallucinate worms stretching her eyeballs out, making Marge attempt to cut her eyes off, leading to her actually cutting off one of her eyes, leaving her partially blind.
- It forces Will Hanlon into a vision of his father burning while he was alone fishing while his real father, Leroy, went to get more bait, which would leave him with serious burns. This vision would later be true as Will dies in a house fire.
- When the Soldiers are attempting to investigate the pillars that sealed it, it transforms into a grotesque monstrosity resembling Uncle Sam and kills them without hesitation.
- It destroys Dick Hallorann's psychic box that kept all of his fears locked up and allows him to control his shining abilities to stop him from seeing ghosts. He would continue to have problems seeing ghosts up to his death in The Shining, meaning he was never able to fully repair his box.
- It tricks Lilly and her friends in the form of Matty, saying Phill was still alive, taking them to the sewers and hearing about their plan. Upon hearing that they were going to take benzodiazepines to become immune to their fear, it gave them a spot of hope only for them to take it away from them as it transformed into Pennywise and reveals to all of them the rotting corpses of their friends (including Matty himself), mocking everything that they stood for.
- During the corpses' discovery, it is revealed It ate Teddy's brains from his skull (what was somewhat presumably by his ghost apparition on cemetery and his image rotting in the cereal box during the supermarket scene) and ripped off Phill's mouth. Phill's death manner is cruel enough, but what makes it worse is the lie about he being alive, just to be revealed how gruesomely it killed him.
- It attempts to eat Lilly after failing to kill Leroy and Pauly, which would've succeeded if the pillars were not in place to protect her.
- Its failed attempt to kill Leroy and Pauly led to Leroy believing that anything he sees down there that's not supposed to needs to be shot immediately, resulting in Pauly sacrificing himself to stop Leroy from killing Will.
- Upon arriving to the Black Spot fire, It torments Dick with the dead people he sees due to his powers during the burning while also killing and eating multiple people.
- It kills Stanley Kersh by using a butcher knife to cleave his head in half and proceeds to eat some of it, though he did deserve it.
- It congrats Ingrid for causing the Black Spot tragedy (and maybe for all the child victims her brought to them in his last cycle).
- Sensing Ingrid's fear of abandonment, It reveals that it killed Bob Gray, the real Pennywise, and ate him. Following that, it revealed the deadlights to Ingrid, causing her to become even more insane than she already was.
- When It senses that one of the pillars got destroyed (leaving a gap in the cage), It decides to kidnap Will and all of the kids at Derry High School for a journey outside of Derry. But not before luring all the school to the auditorium, gruesomelly killing the principal in front all of them and then giving the deadlights at all of the children.
- It intentionally targets Marge within the fog It made as it was making its way out of Derry, as she, Lily, and Ronnie attempt to reconstruct the cage that keeps it trapped within Derry. It did this because it foresaw that she would become the mother of Richie - one of the various people who would kill it in 2016.
- It taunts General Shaw with the face of the same slender old man he encountered many years ago before killing him and several other servicemen stationed within Derry, though he somewhat deserved it for releasing It in the first place.
- It would have spread its terror across the globe were it not for the efforts of Dick, Leroy, Charotte, Rose, Will, Ronnie, Marge, and Lilly all working together to stall It and reseal its cage before it could leave Derry.
- Even then, if Rich's ghost hadn't shown up at the last minute to intervene and help his friends one last time, they would have failed.
It: Chapter One[]
- It tricks Bill's younger brother Georgie by offering his paper boat back before biting his arm off and dragging him into the sewers to mercilessly kill him.
- It kills Eddie Corcoran and Betty Ripsom before the events of the film.
- It prevents a couple from saving Ben Hanscom from the Bowers Gang.
- It murders Patrick Hockstetter (one of Henry's friends) in the sewers after taunting him with visions of zombie kids. While one could argue he deserved his fate, this was still malicious on Its end.
- Repeatedly tries to kill the Losers Club while taunting them with their greatest fears, such as:
- Teasing Bill with Georgie's death.
- Tormenting Beverly Marsh with her father Alvin's sexual abuse as well as her fear of blood.
- Torturing Richie Tozier with his fear of clowns.
- Taunting Ben's overweight frame and exploiting that with his crush on Beverly, as well as showing him the Kitchen Ironworks incident with a boy's head being left in a tree.
- Goaded Mike Hanlon with the deaths of his parents in a fire.
- Chaffs Stanley Uris with the fear of a creepy-looking, flute playing woman in a portrait.
- Provokes Eddie Kaspbrak with the fear of a leper, as well as his hypochondria and his relationship with his mother.
- During the Neibolt House confrontation, it cruelly toyed with Eddie by pretending to bite his arm and mocks his crying while drooling and preparing to devour him. When it overhears Bill claiming that none of its tricks to scare the kids were real, it teases him by saying "it was real enough for Georgie" to sadistically toy with Bill and tries to kill him instead, only stopping because Beverly impaled it through the head.
- It tries to drown Bill and Richie in a pool of ink colored acid.
- It uses its claws to threaten the Losers and scratches Ben's stomach.
- It manipulates Henry Bowers into killing his abusive father, officer Oscar "Butch" Bowers by speaking to him on a TV full of children (who are implied to be the same children that It killed) and a teacher. Although Oscar outright deserved his fate, this was still malicious on Its end, developing Henry's already sociopathic and sadistic nature into full-on murderous intent and psychopathy, to the point that Henry even murders his own friends (as shown in the deleted scenes) for no reason and tries to kill the Losers too, thus making It responsible for turning him into a serial killer.
- Even if Henry did succeed in killing the Losers under Its commands, It would have betrayed him and even murdered him, as shown when It uses Henry as a manipulative pawn since he hated the Losers and was cruel to them, meaning that It had no care whatsoever for Henry and only used him to help it achieve it's goals.
- It is implied that it possessed Beverly's sexually abusive father before forcing him to rape Beverly, leading to her knocking him unconscious out of self-defense.
- It kidnaps Beverly and when she said she isn't afraid of it to its face, it resorted to forcing her to witness the horrible deaths and future of the Losers Club through the Deadlights.
- It is also implied that it used Beverly's father's blood to write "You die if you try" as a way to prevent Bill from saving Beverly.
- It viciously attacks Stan in the sewers in the form of the creepy flute playing woman he's afraid of, violently mauling his face and leaving him scarred.
- As an adult, Stan would later commit suicide out of trauma from this and it would mock the Losers for the loss of their friend.
- It keeps the Losers occupied with their fears to stop them from rescuing Beverly.
- Attempts to manipulate Bill over the possibility of Georgie still being alive, appearing to him as his brother as part of his manipulation to kill him.
- While It did try to bargain with the other Losers, offering to only take Bill and go back to sleep for 27 years, this is out of cowardice rather than genuine honor as It realized the losers were no longer afraid and that It couldn’t take on all of them, making Its generosity pragmatic.
- During the battle, it turns into the Losers' fears and insecurities one more time in an attempt to torment them, even mocking Beverly about her father.
- After realizing it's feeling the thing it brings upon many lives: fear, it cowardly retreats into hibernation after the Losers Club gains the upper hand, just so they don't manage to kill it.
It: Chapter Two[]
- In 2016, after reawakening from a 27 years worth of hibernation, it kills a gay man named Adrian Mellon in front of his boyfriend, Don Hagarty, all while writing the message, "COME HOME" on the bridge with his blood.
- It sends a message via fortune cookies that read "Guess Stanley Could Not Cut It" to mock Stanley's suicide in front of the Losers Club.
- It tricks a girl named Victoria with her insecurity about the birthmark on her face by acting as if it was constantly rejected by its appearance too, and then devours her on the count of 3, all while drooling with hunger.
- It frees the completely psychopathic Henry Bowers from the mental institute to assist him of killing the Losers Club while taking the form of a zombified Patrick Hostetter and giving Henry his switchblade.
- It sadistically toys with Bill, and repeats the same tragedy of Georgie with another boy named Dean who lived in Derry by trapping the child in a hall of mirrors at a carnival and violently killing him in front of Bill as he watched helplessly. Bill even offered for It to kill him in Dean's place, yet it still chose to brutally murder Dean just to torment Bill even more for its own sadistic amusement.
- Teases and tries to kill Richie with a Paul Bunyan statue, while also mocking him that he knows his "dirty little secret" about him being gay.
- Torments Eddie with flashbacks about his mother, and then tries to kill him in the form of the leper.
- Tries to kill Beverly in the form of an elderly Ingrid, torturing her with her insecurities about her father's abuse towards her.
- Tries to kill Ben in the form of Beverly, mocking him with jokes about him being fat, and calling him "Fat Boy" when he hides in his locker.
- It torments the Losers during their second battle with their fears, even nearly burying Ben alive, not to mention that it fat-shames Ben and claims that he'll die alone before closing the hatch on him and leaving him in the dark.
- It is implied that if it had succeeded in killing the Losers Club, it would've gone on to kill the rest of humanity.
- It kills Eddie right in front of the Losers Club after he lets his guard down and attempts to slaughter the rest of them as well.
- While It remarking that the Losers Club had "grown up" in it's final battle against them might be seen as a bit honorable, it is very likely that It was just taunting them one final time.
- While Its presumed death was gruesome and painful, as its heart is ripped out and crushed by the hands of the Losers Club which leads to It disintegrating as a result, it's not played for any sympathy, but rather for karma and satisfaction as it truly deserved it for its sadistic and vile actions considering not only what it did to the children of Derry that it had killed over the years, but also for what it did to the Losers Club and everybody else as well. It is also unconfirmed if It is truly dead or not, due to its omnipotent presence throughout time and space, meaning that it could revive in the future and continue its atrocities.
Trivia[]
- This version of Pennywise is arguably more evil, violent, sadistic, scary, and brutal than that of it's Tim Curry counterpart who, while also Pure Evil, is not as brutal because it's murders aren't shown in full detail, whereas this version has details to it's murders, such as Georgie getting his arm ripped and the mirror being covered in blood after it murders Dean. This version also lacks the comedic charm that it's miniseries counterpart has, not really having that many comedic moments that make it genuinely funny.
- This incarnation of It, in its Pennywise form, is the current icon of the Pure Evil Wiki.
- There is an interview with Bill Skarsgård in which he states that It wanted to get killed by the Losers Club, as it wanted to experience fear and wanted to end its miserable life, given that is subconsciously was tired of doing the same things over and over again, and wanted to end its self-torment. However, it is too debatable, as It could have wanted to experience fear but not want to die, and this fact is not confirmed canon by the director Andy Muschietti, leaving this as a debatable and possibly non canon disqualifying factor. Even then if it were confirmed by Andy Muschietti, this may not disqualify It considering Word of God doesn't count unless it's shown onscreen to back such a claim up. And even if this was true, it would not make it sympathetic and would not count as a redemption.
- It has been stated that there was a deleted scene of It devouring a baby, which would have made it even worse had it been kept in the movie.
