All genes... All people have a predestined fate. That man bore a mighty fate... A star of change. Now I understand. Amado wanted to cling to it... to that man's mighty fate... To the minuscule possibility of change... Kashin Koji, clone of... Jiraiya of the Great Three. That you shall die here... was also predestined by your genes!
~ Isshiki declaring Koji Kashin's fate.

Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, also known as Jigen, is the main antagonist of the Boruto anime/manga series. He was a high-ranking member of the Ōtsutsuki clan's main family who, after being fatally wounded by his fellow clanswoman Kaguya, took possession of the body of a monk named Jigen—who he would use as his vessel for over a millenium. He was also the founder and leader of the Kara organization.

In the original Japanese version, he was voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda , who also voiced Redyue in Kamen Rider Gaim and Vail in Kamen Rider Revice and Keith Silverstein in English, who also voiced Masayoshi Shido in Persona 5, Hammerhead in Marvel's Spiderman and Bryan Fury in Street Fighter x Tekken.

What makes him Pure Evil?[]

  • He arrived on Earth with Kaguya with the intention of planting a God Tree, which would suck up all of the planet's biological energy and kill all of its living inhabitants in the process.
  • After having been betrayed and nearly killed by Kaguya, Isshiki assaulted a monk named Jigen, entering his body in order to harvest his nutrients and eventually completely taking it over.
  • After realizing that Jigen's body wasn't powerful enough to sustain him, he decided to train another host with the intention of using them as a vessel to revive himself back to full strength.
  • He formed the organization Kara, a group dedicated to helping Isshiki cultivate a new God Tree in exchange for having their personal desires fulfilled.
    • This included Amado who wanted to revive his dead daughter. It is unknown if Isshiki would have kept his promises to them, and even if he did, their planet would have been made uninhabitable afterwards, making him fulfill his promises pointless—that is unless he intended to transport them to another planet that was habitable after fulfilling his promises.
  • When one of his minions, Ōga, attempted to research his heart, he considered it an act of treason and destroyed part of her brain before she could flee. This injury caused her to suffer neurological damage to the extent that she no longer had a will to live, and her body began to break down shortly after.
  • He ordered Boro to dispose of several cyborgs that he deemed a potential threat to him due to their power exceeding his—one of whom was Daemon, a child. However, Boro never actually disposed of these cyborgs and instead hid them away.
  • He obtained fifteen children to be trained as suitable vessels, intending to use them as pawns to revive himself. When he implanted his Kāma onto them, only two survived, while the rest of them perished.
    • Some of these children were kidnapped by his minion Boro who posed as a benevolent cult leader.
  • He trained Kawaki, the only one of his test subjects to obtain a complete Kāma, in abhorrently brutal ways in an attempt to have Kawaki master his Kāma—all the while telling him that his only purpose is to be his vessel and physically assaulting him whenever he questioned Isshiki.
  • He had his minion Deepa, who was on life support, disposed of due to not wanting to waste resources, though Deepa deserved it for all of his heinous crimes.
  • After learning that Victor had betrayed him, he had Koji Kashin assassinate him via immolation—though, just like Deepa, he deserved it for all of his heinous crimes.
  • After impaling and seriously injuring both Naruto and Sasuke, he attempted to kill the latter. After he failed to do so due to Naruto using multiple shadow clones to stall him and Sasuke using his Transportation Jutsu to escape, he sealed Naruto in a sphere-like receptacle while Naruto was still impaled on his rods.
  • When Jigen shed a tear of pain due to his body starting to break down, Isshiki started berating him—calling him a pathetic failure unworthy of being his vessel.
  • He derided Koji as nothing but a pitiful sacrificial pawn and prepared to kill him.
  • He had no sense of respect or loyalty to any of his fellow clansmen, as he was willing to use Boruto, Momoshiki's vessel, as a sacrifice to cultivate the God Tree.
  • After being forced to use Jigen's body to revive himself, he intruded the Hidden Leaf Village with the intent of locating Kawaki and planting another Kāma onto him in order to once again make him his vessel.
  • He used his Dojutsu to shrink numerous buildings in the Hidden Leaf Village and threatened many civilians' lives all in an attempt to coerce Naruto into handing over Kawaki.
  • During his fight with Naruto, Sasuke and Boruto, he broke Boruto's arm and severely beat him while revealing his intention to feed Boruto to the Ten-Tails and having all of the planet's inhabitants killed afterwards.
  • When pushed into a corner, he threatened to kill Naruto unless Kawaki revealed himself and allowed Isshiki to plant another Kāma onto him.
  • Before his soul was destroyed, Isshiki appeared before Code, telling him about the events that led to his death and ordering him to continue the legacy of the Ōtsutsuki clan—which entails consuming the energy of the entire planet and killing all of its inhabitants in the process in order to cultivate the Chakra Fruit for consumption and then repeating the process on countless other planets until godhood was achieved.

Trivia[]

  • He and Momoshiki are the only Pure Evil members of the Ōtsutsuki clan.
  • Despite his clear status as pure evil, Isshiki has shown shades of more positive attributes.
    • He was shown to be willing to solve conflicts peacefully, such as when Kawaki surrendered himself to him in order to have Naruto spared, and when he later tried to simply abandon Naruto in an alternate dimension instead of killing him immediately.
    • He was also shown to tolerate his subordinates failure for the most part, like when he let Victor go unpunished after his unauthorized plan with the artificial God Tree failed and simply gave him an ominous warning, or when he merely reprimanded Delta when she returned to the headquarters after she disobeyed his orders of simply following Koji's lead, and was subsequently defeated by Naruto.
    • Finally, he was shown to have some degree of respect for beings outside of himself, like when he said that Jiraiya bore a mighty fate, when he asked a defeated Koji Kashin if he had any last words for fellow Kara inner Amado, saying it was a final courtesy to a former comrade (although, given Isshiki's personality, this is likely him being sarcastic, and he still planned on killing both Koji and Amado anyway), and, most notably, when he referred to Code as his most loyal subordinate.
