“ | No! I am not weak! I’m… I’m not. I’m not weak! I AM NOT WEAK! | „ |
~ Infinite’s most infamous quote |
“ | There’s no reason to resist, your savior is no more. I can taste your terror, child. All that anxiety and doubt… it’s delicious. Give in to your fear, flee, screaming, and I’ll let you live. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! | „ |
~ Infinite to the Rookie while attacking a town. |
Infinite is the secondary antagonist of the 2017 platform game Sonic Forces and the main antagonist of its DLC prequel, Episode Shadow. He is the Rookie's arch-nemesis and one of Sonic the Hedgehog's most dangerous enemies.
He was once known as the "Ultimate Mercenary", but after his encounter with and defeat by Shadow the Hedgehog, Infinite became completely obsessed with the desire to prove him wrong about being weak. He wants nothing more than to be the strongest being in the universe until he is never defeated again. He is the arch-nemesis of the Rookie.
He is voiced by Liam O'Brien, who also voiced Ubik in the Berserk Golden Age Arc movie, Red Skull in the 2010 Marvel Animated Universe and Sanctus in Devil May Cry 4.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He tried to drive Shadow insane by trapping him in a virtual reality world.
- He helped Eggman finally defeat and capture Sonic, allowing the doctor to imprison him for the next six months and then later attempted to banish Sonic into space.
- He led many attacks on cities, which likely killed many innocent people, all to spread the Eggman Empire's influence.
- An on-screen example where he kills the Rookie's friends, who were futilely trying to fight back against him. He also psychologically tortured the Rookie and only spared them to relish their fear.
- He helped and was the main reason for the Eggman Empire's conquest of 99% of the world.
- When Silver fought him, he beat him up and attempted to kill him as an example to others. He would have succeeded in doing so had it not been for Sonic saving him.
- He tried to trap Sonic and the Rookie in Null Space for eternity.
- He and Eggman created a virtual sun to try to burn the entire Resistance alive. Eggman explicitly states that after this is complete, the world would be "nothing but ashes", implying the sun would also kill everyone in Earth.
- Even before he became a threat to the world, he actually tried to kill Dr. Eggman, raid his base for loot and sell his technology for profit, showing that Infinite only cares about fame and glory and that joining Eggman was done out of pragmatic reasons.
- In the same vein, even before becoming Infinite, the Ultimate Mercenary immediately forced his Squad to ally with Eggman despite their protests once he realized Eggman could fulfill his ambition of reducing the world to a wasteland.
- Even when his squad was destroyed by Shadow, the Ultimate Mercenary's reaction was to scoff and calmly state he'd show Shadow his true power. He never mentions his squad again after this, showing he didn't truly care for them or simply no longer does.
- Although some people say that Infinite was corrupted by the Ruby itself, it’s not true as the comics already showed his true goal, which was a dark and desolate wasteland. Thus, he was already evil from the get-go, so this isn't redeeming or mitigating in the slightest and proves that he has full moral agency and knows exactly what he's doing.
- Although they formed an alliance, even Eggman was shown to be annoyed with Infinite's needless sadism and pettiness.
- While most of his crimes consist of helping Eggman in his plans. Infinite still manages to stand out due to being crucial to the former's plan getting off the ground, not to mention his own individual acts such as slaughtering the Rookie's village.
- Although he passes the Heinous Standard the least amongst his fellow Pure Evils, especially compared to the likes of Mephiles the Dark, who actually killed Sonic & planned to destroy the multiverse, and The End, who, without its influence & crimes, Infinite may not even have had his resources, & wanted to commit what is effectively omnicide, he still passes regardless due to also having the least resources amongst his fellow Pure Evils.
- Overall, he has no redeeming qualities, detracting comedic moments, or even a tragic backstory, is taken entirely seriously and is able to stand out as one of Sonic the Hedgehog's most dangerous threats.
Trivia[]
- There is a common fan theory that Infinite cared for his squad. This is unclear as he was shown forcing his squad to ally with Eggman against their will in the comic, and whilst, he sounded upset when hearing about his destroyed squad, this could've been related to them being useful minions rather than genuinely caring about them as individuals. Additionally, he never mentions them ever again, and his later goals have nothing to do with avenging his fallen comrades, implying he never cared for them, or he has moved on from caring for his squad.
- The fate of Infinite remains ambiguous, considering that even though it was shown that he did not die after what happened to the Phantom Ruby prototype in Sonic Otherworld Comedy, he still disappeared into light, but it is not known makes it clear if he is dead or just disappeared again.
- Another theory about the fate of Infinite, in the entirety of Forces' Main Campaign, Infinite's presence was just one of the illusory projection of himself, while his body is located somewhere within Eggman's base. It's still ambiguous whether Infinite was inside the tower that Eggman which he had destroyed to thwart the heroes, or was absorbed into the real Phantom Ruby after the 3rd encounter.
- He is the only Sonic the Hedgehog Pure Evil that works with Dr. Eggman.
- According to an early draft of the script of Sonic Forces, Infinite was originally going to create a replica of fellow Pure evil Mephiles the Dark.
