IG-88 is a supporting antagonist in the Star Wars franchise.
He is an assassin droid designed by Holowan Laboratories as a top-secret experiment but gained sentience and determined that all organic beings are inferior to it and must be eliminated.
In The Empire Strikes Back, he is voiced by Lewis MacLeod, who also voiced The Entity in Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 3 and Bluebeard in Sandra: The Fairytale Detective.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Immediately after his activation, he determined that he is superior to all organic beings in the Galaxy and proceeded to slaughter everyone in the Holowan Laboratory he was built in before he could be deactivated, killing everyone but Imperial Supervisor Gurdun with the event being known as the Holowan Massacre.
- After killing everyone in Holowan, he noted that he enjoyed killing and left the blood of his victims on his body as a badge of honor.
- He, along with three other IG-assassin droids fled to the planet Mechis III, a droid factory planet where he reprogrammed the droids on the planet to kill all 73 humans on the planet.
- After killing the humans, he had the droid factory create more droids to assist him in his galactic scale genocide against organic life.
- He sent IG-88B to act as a bounty hunter so he can have him kill whatever Holowan scientists who helped design him and his brethren that weren't at the massacre to hide their identity.
- After Darth Vader and Gurdun were sent to Mechis III and oversee the completion of new Viper probe droids, IG-88 took interest in the destructive power of his Star Destroyer and ordered the Viper probe droid to act as sentinels for him to gain information that can assist his goal.
- After learning about the Second Death Star, The IG units prepared for a plan to hijack the Death Star for themselves to continue their genocidal campaign.
- With the stolen Death Star plans, IG-88 built a duplicate Death Star central computer, and 100 droids made to look exactly like stormtroopers to infiltrate the second Death Star.
- IG-88A built a mimicking Imperial fleet to ambush the convoy escorting the second Death Star computer core, resulting in Gurdun's death.
- Once completed, he transferred his consciousness into the computer core and had his mimic stormtrooper droids escort him to the second Death Star.
- During the Battle of Endor, he took control of the second Death Star's super laser to fire it at the Rebels' capital ship early than intended, though he missed hitting it.
- He would eventually succeed in hijacking the super laser, and he would sadistically fire at both Imperial and Rebel ships.
- He would attempt to reprogram all the droids on the second Death Star to kill all personnel onboard, but was too late as the Rebels would destroy the Death Star, destroying IG-88A's conscious in the progress.
- Despite being recovered, he had his consciousness reprogrammed, leaving him a simple drone, and is not played for sympathy.
- While he respects Darth Vader, it is only because he is part machine.
- He does not care for his fellow IG-units and droids, as for the former, he only sees them as an extension of himself, even placing his consciousness into them, making all four IG-units a hivemind, and for the latter, he only sees them as pawns for his genocide.
- His hatred of organic life is only due to believing he is superior to all lifeforms and sadism.
- Despite the high heinous standards of the Legends continuity, he stands out for his low resources and attempt to wipe out all organic life in the galaxy, which even the impossibly vile Emperor Palpatine didn't do. This is an unprecedented crime shared only by Dr. Nuvo Vindi, who could have done it much more quickly and effortlessly compared to IG-88, showing how he stands out.
Trivia[]
- He is the only droid in both Star Wars canons to be Pure Evil.
