There will be other opportunities to peer behind the mask, Batman. For if you think you have defeated Gotham's ultimate criminal mastermind, think again.
~ Strange upon his incarceration.
The line between genius and insanity is often blurred.
~ Strange to Batman.

Hugo Strange is a recurring antagonist in the cartoon show The Batman.

He was the chief of psychiatry at Arkham and wanted to learn more about the criminal mind.

The character was earlier voiced by the late Frank Gorshin. From his fourth appearance, he was voiced by Richard Green, who also voiced Lord Orm in Justice League.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He toys with the well-being of his patients, just to satisfy his curiosity about how the criminal mind works. One good example is when he cured Arnold Wesker of his split personality, Scarface, before breaking his mind again, much to Batman's anger.
  • Although not blatantly stated, it's at least possible that he lied about Ethan Bennett (the first Clayface) being sane during his court trial. If that's the case, then he would be responsible for Clayface nearly murdering Batman and Joker after he left Arkham.
  • While he does try to help locate Detective Ellen Yin after she gets kidnapped by, the Joker, it was likely just to protect his own image rather than true altruism. Indeed, when Batman comes across him inside the Joker's mind, Strange seems more interested in talking with a child Joker about the Joker's childhood than looking for Yin.
  • Let's Scarface leave Arnold Wesker and later bringing back Scarface to ruin Weaker's new life.
  • When confronted by Batman about putting Scarface in Wesker's apartment, he shows no remorse over his actions, saying, "I had to see if the criminal mind can be cured". Batman does not believe him, and he vows to keep an eye on him.
  • Lies to Gotham PD, saying DAVE will help catch criminals when it is the opposite. Bruce finds his claims hard to believe.
  • He builds D.A.V.E. to go on a massive crime spree, almost forcing Batman to choose between either letting Alfred get crushed or revealing his secret identity to the public.
  • He literary calls himself Gotham's ultimate criminal mastermind after being caught, showing he views himself better than the common criminal.
  • He infects Batman with a hallucinogen to make him flood the city with fear toxin and drive so many people insane.
  • Unlike the other villains who were captured by Rumor, he shows no concern for his allies and laughs at Paul's attempt to save his boss, believing it to be pathetic.
  • In the comics, he offers to help cure Ethan Bennett (a.k.a. Clayface), only to reveal that he plans to turn him into a mindless giant and wreck Gotham.
  • He worked with the Joining, an alien race, to gain universal knowledge and went so far as to basically sell out humanity to be destroyed by them (since he's de-powering the Justice League so they can't fight back when they arrive).
  • While he does become comatose due to being overfilled with knowledge by the end of the show, no one felt sympathy for him due to his evil actions.
