Lord Hugh Hammer (born simply as Hugh), also known as Hugh the Hammer, is a supporting character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. He is a Dragonseed who is recruited by Rhaenyra Targaryen to help her efforts, only to defect to the Greens at the nightmarish First Battle of Tumbleton alongside Ulf the White.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Even though he fought valiantly for the Blacks during the Battle of the Gullet, he subverts it completely by betraying Queen Rhaenyra and fighting against them. Even after the battle, Hugh planned to make himself King of the Seven Kingdoms, proving how selfish he truly is.
- He allegedly (according to the questionable Mushroom) beat a knight to death in a dispute over a maiden girl after being recruited.
- During the First Battle of Tumbleton, he and Ulf White abandoned their task to defend the city and instead defected to the Greens, betraying Queen Rhaenyra by burning the city down with their dragons, and then helping the Greens sack the city, resulting in:
- Robbing homes and shops throughout the city.
- Raping women and girls as young as 8, and also including septas, silent sisters and elderly women.
- Killing soldiers while they surrendered.
- Killing every male they found, including old men and boys.
- Torturing wealthy citizens to death to reveal hidden riches.
- Impaling babies on spears.
- While Hugh didn’t mean for this to happen, he showed no remorse for causing it, and partook in other acts of violence after the battle. Tumbleton was never fully rebuilt afterwards, and the town wasn’t even a tenth the size as it was before.
- After the battle, he began sleeping with the widow of a knight he killed, likely through force.
- According to Mushroom, he let his partner in crime Ulf regularly rape three virgin girls every night and feed the ones that didn’t satisfy him to his dragon Silverwing.
- However, Mushroom's account is deemed unreliable at best, as it's filled with lots of obscene scandals and sensational content. Thus, it's possible this did or did not happen. Also Hugh's involvement in Ulf's crime is not confirmed either.
- During negotiations, Hugh rudely tells Daeron Targaryen that his father should have beaten him more and threatens to beat him. Hugh then reveals he wishes to be king, even making a crown for himself, and takes over Tumbleton as a dictator, before announcing he would burn everything in his path with his dragon Vermithor.
- After Roger Corne knocked off Hugh’s crown, Hugh responded by nailing horseshoes on his head, which lead to a fight with three dead and twelve injured.
- While his death by Jon Roxton’s hands is implied to be gory, as Jon supposedly died slipping on Hugh’s entrails, it’s deserved for his crimes and isn’t played for sympathy.
- He is never shown to care about anyone, not even Ulf, his dragon, or his men.
- Despite the extremely high heinous standard of a Song of Ice and Fire, Hugh stands out for having very few resources besides his dragon and a army that is constantly shrinking, and how brutal the Sack of Tumbleton was, showing how destructive dragons can be.
Trivia[]
- His Television counterpart doesn’t count, as the Battle of Tumbleton hasn’t happened yet, and he’s also shown to love his family.
