Hody Jones is the main antagonist of the Fishman Island arc from the One Piece franchise. Hody is the leader of the New Fishman Pirates, a group of Fishmen with an intense hatred for humans whose goals were to overthrow the government of Fishman Island. He is a Fishman who has an intense hatred for humans. Unlike Arlong, Hody does not have the negative experiences to explain his hatred, he simply despises humanity because he was raised to do so.
In the anime, he is voiced by Joji Nakata and Larry Brantley in the English Dub. The latter also voiced Ibara in Dr. Stone.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He already hated humans and wanted to kill all of them since his youngest age, and not for traumatic experiences like the ones that Fisher Tiger and Arlong had nor because he did see humans harming Fishmen. He prejudged all humans for the rumors and racist commentaries told by people inside his circle, but it had no incidence on this villainy.
- 10 years before Fishmen Island Arc, he crosses the Moral Event Horizon by murdering Queen Otohime and then frames the murder on a human in order to spread more hatred and have Fishmen foster their hatred towards humans but also to destroy peace with humans.
- He stole the national treasure of Fishman Island, the Tamatebako, after leaving the army. Only for the secret power that grant the box, showing his power-hungry nature.
- Along his partners abused of a prohibited substance called Energy Steroids that gives more strength, durability and agility to the cost of shortening the life, ignoring that its destructive nature can put in danger people and places.
- He incited Fishmen to hate humans.
- He and his men would abduct many humans over the years and make them his slaves, including women and children. Many of them would die from his abuse, but he would also send some of them back to the surface only to have them spread fear of Fishmen to humans.
- He masterminded a coup against the Fishman Island and attempts to murder King Neptune and the entire royal family.
- He wanted to enslave all of humanity which indicates he wanted to take control of the world for it.
- During his fight with Zoro, he grabbed one of his soldiers and used him as a living shield to defend against Zoro's attack.
- He forced the citizens of Fishman Island to step on the image of Queen Otohime for her peaceful ideologies.
- He attempted to have thousands of Fishmen murdered for signing Queen Otohime's petition to have peace between humans and Fishmen, calling out each of their names during a live broadcast to target and kill them one by one.
- He attempted to force the citizens of Fishman Island out of their homes to accommodate his soldiers, openly saying that it didn't matter whether they ran away or dropped dead to do it.
- He wounds Madam Shyarly with a water bullet out of annoyance when she claimed Hody would not be the one to destroy Fishman Island.
- He mocked Shirahoshi for keeping the truth about Queen Otohime's assassination a secret when she attempted to honor her mother's words and not hold a grudge against the ones who killed her.
- He intended to commit genocide against the human race. In addition, he showed that he did not mind killing fishmen or his entire country. Because of that, he is the most heinous villain of the franchise because none other One-Piece villain had the intention to destroy the entire humanity and/or all Fishmen.
- He tortured King Neptune and the three princes by firing continuous volleys of water bullets just to sadistically punish them and make Shirahoshi feel more guilty for keeping the truth about her mother's death a secret.
- He attempted to kill Vander Decken IX, who he had made an ally out of, and have the Noah, a gigantic ship, crash land onto Fishman Island during his fight with Luffy and the Straw Hats. The crash would have resulted in the destruction of the island and the deaths of everyone on it. Even when he was mad at Vander Decken for attempting to use the Noah to destroy Fishman Island, he was only angry because he'd get killed too, and decided to go through with Vander Decken's plan once his safety was ensured.
- Though he does deeply admire Arlong and his crusade against humans, this is not a truly redeeming quality: after his defeat, he eventually viewed Arlong as too barbaric, believing his pirate flag to be an empty symbol and merely admiring his ideologies of hatred towards humans instead of who he was as a person. When he wanted to get revenge on Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates, it wasn't out of anger for defeating Arlong, but because they put an end to his ideals and ambitions.
- He did not mind his childhood companions and allies dying when he wanted the Noah to crash through Fishman Island, only caring about the fact that the Straw Hat Pirates would be killed in the process.
- Tried to kill Luffy when he was more vulnerable in the bubble.
- Even after he was defeated and aged in appearance due to the side-effects of Energy Steroids, he remained just as deluded, still believing he will have revenge against Luffy and assuring that he would get his revenge against Luffy and all the humans.
- He lacks the redeeming qualities that Arlong and most other villains have. While at least Arlong had negative experiences with humans and would never hurt fellow Fishmen or Fishman Island no matter how bad the circumstances were or if they did not agree with him, Hody, on the other hand, does not have any tragic past, Freudian excuse or any detracting moment and has demonstrated on multiple occasions to not care about his own people or his birthplace and is willing to kill any Fishmen who are sympathetic towards humans and destroy an entire location if it benefits him.
