~ Alegni taunting Dahlia. |
Herzgo Alegni is a major antagonist of R.A Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt, serving as the main antagonist of the Neverwinter Saga. He is a Tiefling warlord of the Shadovar, who sought to control Neverwinter. In doing so, he was put in conflict with the Red Wizard of Thay who wanted to use Neverwinter to create their Dread Ring. He was also responsible for raping Dahlia Sin'felle, and enslaving Artemis Entreri. He was the servant Draygo Quick, the father of Effron Alegni, and the archnemesis of Dahlia Sin'felle.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He despises his son Effron for being physically disabled, seeing him as a disgrace. He constantly belittles him and tells him what a disappointment he is and makes it clear that he would kill him if Draygo Quick allowed it.
- Although he does follow Draygo Quick and acts affable towards him, his POV shows that he despises the warlock and taking orders from anyone. The only reason he joins the Shadowvar and furthers their cause is to help himself obtain more power, and he feels no loyalty to the organization or any of its members.
Past[]
- He joined the Shadowvar, a jingoistic and murderous organization, because he believed it would give him the chance at getting power.
- He quickly made a name for himself for being exceptionally brutal and ruthless, burning several villages to the ground and killing the inhabitants.
- He became an infamous serial rapist, so much so that his servants were reluctant to bring him female prisoners.
- On one occasion, he attacked and wiped out the Shakebrook Syn'dalay elf clan, killing most of the elves. One of the only survivors was 10-year-old girl named Dahlia, who he brutally raped after killing her mother in front of her, before leaving her to die in the ruins of her home.
- Upon realizing his son did not have the ability to move his left arm, he tried to kill him, but was stopped by Draygo Quick, who took the boy under his wing and raised him.
- When Draygo Quick gave Alegni a sword called Charon's Claw linked to the soul of an assassin named Barrabus the Gray, Alegni used it to make Barrabus his slave. He could use Charon's Claw to stab pain directly into Barrabus's soul, which he did on a daily basis, either when he needed someone to take anger out on, he believed Barrabus had disrespected him or was simply bored.
- The pain was so intense and frequent that Barrabus tried to kill himself several times, but the sword wouldn't let him.
The Neverwinter Saga[]
- Through years of bribes and assassinations Alegni established Shadowvar control over the city of Neverwinter, eventually controlling the city and demoting the actual lord to nothing but a figure head.
- He had the lord of Neverwinter tortured by Barrabus because he would not change the name of a bridge in the city called the Winged Wyvern Bridge to the Herzgo Alegni Bridge.
- Alegni had no involvement with the bridge whatsoever, and simply believed that since the bridge was beautiful, it should be named after him. This makes the act even pettier.
- Although he was angered by a volcano erupting and destroying Neverwinter, it was only because it got in the way of his plans, and not because he cared for the people killed in the disaster.
- During the rebuilding of Neverwinter, he once again began building his dominance in the city through bribes and assassinations.
- Although he protected Neverwinter from Ashmadai cultists, it was only to make himself seem like a hero in the eyes of the people of Neverwinter and further gain control.
- Additionally, he had several Ashmadai cultists brutally tortured simply for sadism.
- He forced Barrabus and Effron to work together in the hope that Barrabus would get irritated with and kill Effron.
- When Barrabus had the lord of Neverwinter rename the Winged Wyvern Bridge the Bridge of Barrabus, Alegni wrathfully tortured him for hours.
- The pain of the torture was so intense that its memory later gave Barrabus the strength to resist the sword.
- Upon hearing that Dahlia was in the area, he had Barrabus and Effron try to kill her and her companions.
- When he finally met Dahlia again, he took advantage of her trauma involving him and tried to take her captive so he could make her his sex slave.
- In order to retrieve Charon's Claw, which had been stolen from him by Dahlia's group, he attacked the ancient city of the dwarves Gauntlgrym and slaughtered the Drow who had been staying there.
- During his final interaction with Effron, he told him that he had always been a disappointment, making Effron cry.
- He made one final attempt to kill Dahlia in the depths of Gauntlgrym, before she killed him.
- Even after his death, his actions had a lasting effect on Dahlia and Effron, making it extremely difficult for either of them to connect with another person due to their respective trauma at his hands.
Trivia[]
- Herzgo Alegni is the only pure evil from the Dungeons and Dragons franchise to only appear in the novels.
