Helen Vaughan is the main antagonist of the 1894 horror novella The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
- When she was a child, she would lead children out of the village on long journeys through the woods. On one such occasion, a young boy was driven to madness upon seeing Helen dance with naked men.
- Initially appearing to befriend a young girl named Rachel, Helen drives her half-insane after it is heavily implied that she let her father Pan assault Rachel. Rachel would eventually return to the woods and never returned home.
- She married a man named Herbert and "corrupted him mind and soul" before he was found dead.
- She frightened an unnamed country gentleman ("Mr. Blank") to death.
- She drove several young men to suicide.
- Helen partakes in violent orgies and human sacrifice when she was traveling the Americas.
- She commits suicide not out of remorse but only to avoid the consequences of her crimes.
