In my youth I saw enough flawless swordsmen to know I’d never be one. I put my efforts into other arts. Commerce. Tea.
~ Shindo introducing himself to Mizu and Taigen.
Fall of an empire in under an hour.
~ Shindo after Fowler murders the guards defending the shogun's castle.

Heiji Shindo is the secondary antagonist in the first season of the Netflix animated series Blue Eye Samurai. He is the right-hand man of Abijah Fowler, who works to aid him conquer Japan and kill the shogun, while also trying to get him killed to get Japan for himself.

He was voiced by Randall Park.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • According to Mizu, Shindo is known for selling western guns, opium, and prostitutes for money.
  • He cuts the thumbs of the people he makes deals with as a way to prove his superiority over them.
  • He worked with Abijah Fowler in his plan to overthrow the Shogun and conquer Japan, keeping his existence a secret and allowing him to commit crimes and scheme his coup against the shogun for two decades.
  • After finding out that Mizu was after him, he sent the Four Fangs to kill her after Fowler gave him the suggestion.
  • Understanding that Mizu couldn't be killed easily, Shindo decided to make a deal with her, offering her money and the chance to become the leader of clan Sendai, but only if she allowed him to cut off her right thumb, preventing her from ever wielding a sword again.
  • After Mizu refused his first deal, Shindo offered to get her to Fowler, but told her he wouldn't help her after Fowler was dead, which Mizu rightfully suspects that Shindo's plan would have gotten her killed by Fowler's guards while escaping his castle.
  • When Mizu refused to get along with his plan, Shindo threatened to order his archers to rain arrows down on her and Taigen, and after Mizu cut off his hand, he allowed the archers to try to kill them.
  • He kidnapped Taigen and had him tortured to find out where Mizu was, while mentioning the things he used to torture him. After he refused, he continued to torture him out of sadism until he was barely alive and threw him in the dungeon of Fowler's castle.
  • After finding out that Mizu had broke into Fowler's castle, Shindo used the viewfinder the castle had so he could watch Mizu die.
  • When the guards failed to kill Mizu, Shindo sent his giant henchman to kill Mizu alongside drugging her with Fowler's flowers and releasing the prisoners in his dungeon to kill her.
  • During their travel to Edo, he and Fowler stopped in several brothels and took part in several orgies, and during some of them, they killed some of the people involved in said orgies.
  • After being told by Fowler that the guns they were going to use to overthrow the shogun were being smuggled to Japan, Shindo tried to get them before Fowler in the hopes of being able to lead the attack against the shogun and then kill Fowler.
  • When the shogun's army locked the gates to the shogun's castle to stop Fowler and his army to getting in, Shindo killed them and opened the doors so Fowler could kill the shogun and his army.
  • After Fowler killed the shogun, Shindo shot one of his allies while demanding that the rest would bow to them or they would die, and when one of the clan lords, Mori, committed seppuku, Shindo showed sadistic glee.
  • When Taigen was able to get him and prepared to kill him, Shindo tried to make a deal with Taigen, offering him a chance of power and money in order to save himself.
  • Overall, Shindo serves as the one enabling Fowler's crimes and serving as his biggest benefactor, thus playing the biggest role in making Fowler's attempt to wipe out the shogunate nearly succeed.
  • While he despises Fowler, this stems from his racist views rather than genuine moral standards, and although he is briefly seen closing his eyes after Fowler's army shoot the shogun's last defense, he immediately looks proudly at it and says that an entire empire fell in less than an hour, subverting any type of reluctance he may have had.
  • Although he seems to initially pity Fowler after finding out about his past, he continues to despise Fowler and use him to take over Japan.

Trivia[]

  • So far, he and Boss Hamata are the only Blue Eye Samurai villains to be Pure Evil.
