~ Mortecai to Esther as he describes the murder of the Jewish women and children under Haman's orders. |
Haman is the main antagonist of George Frideric Handel's oratorio Esther, an adaptation of the Biblical tale of the same name.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Planned to assassinate King Ahasuerus of Persia, despite formerly being his loyal visier.
- When Esther's cousin, Mordecai, became aware of his plans to assassinate the King, Haman manipulated the King into allowing him to commit genocide against the entire Jewish race-not only because Mordecai knew what he knew, but also because he refused to bow to him. He also planned to have Mordecai hung for said refusal.
- Shows no love for his wife, Habdonah, and when she told him he should show mercy to the Jews, he refused to listen and carried on with his plans.
- Orders the murder of several Jews, including women and children, whom he has thrown against rocks and stabbed as their mothers are holding him. This makes the way he carries out his plans far more graphic than that of his Biblical counterpart, whose murders were never described in detail.
- When Esther exposes him to the King, Haman begs for his life, but to no avail. When the King has Haman executed in Mordecai's place, Haman curses all before him as he claims to be the true victim of persecution.
