Hades is the main antagonist of Disney's 35th full-length animated feature film Hercules.
He is an evil god and the ruler of the Underworld and brother of Zeus and Poseidon who sought to overthrow the other Gods of Olympus and rule it himself by unleashing the Titans, an ancient evil race of powerful monsters who used to terrorize the world. He is the archenemy and paternal uncle of the main protagonist, Hercules.
He is voiced by James Woods, who also voices Owlman in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He rules the Underworld with an iron fist and is quite abusive towards his minions, Pain and Panic, whenever they anger him.
- He has an immense hatred of the other Gods of Olympus and seeks to overthrow them and his brother, Zeus, and take over the universe due to growing tired his role as the ruler of the Underworld.
- While he does seem to have some honor, making a deal with Hercules to not harm Megara if he gave up his strength and later to save Meg in exchange for Hercules's life, the former he only did to make sure Hercules would agree to the deal and the latter because he didn't think he could save her from the River of Styx. So, this honor is not genuine but rather pragmatic made by manipulation.
- While he is an over-the-top comedic villain, he is still treated as a genuine threat in-universe as all his actions have gravity and his reputation as the ruler of the Underworld is not in vain.
- While it could be argued that the other gods were a little jerkish to him, this doesn't make him tragic, nor does it excuse his actions of kidnapping baby Hercules and attempting to make him mortal with Pain and Panic having attempted to kill baby Hercules, unleashing the Titans, and attempting to seize power over Olympus. It shows that Hades is, in fact, a power-hungry, spiteful tyrant.
Background[]
- Upon finding out that Hercules will stop his plan in 18 years, Hades tasks Pain and Panic, to strip him of his immortality and kill his nephew.
Hercules[]
- In the film there’s a scene where there are 7,000,000,009 souls in the underworld meaning Hades has killed billions.
- He has the soul of Megara enslaved after she sold her soul to Hades to save her boyfriend, only to keep it after he later cheats on her and forces her to commit several of his orders, even increasing her sentence for her failures.
- Upon learning that Hercules is still alive after Pain and Panic failed their goal, Hades devises a plan to trick Hercules into unknowingly releasing Hydra from his lair, who nearly killed Hercules.
- He is even shown the monster addressing the onlookers who had come to watch the battle, proving that the monster would have killed them if Hercules had not interfered.
- He puts Hercules to fight against different monsters in desperate attempts to kill him, all being useless.
- When the Hydra is buried in the landslide triggered by Hercules, he shows no regret over its demise, rejoicing over Hercules's supposed demise and lighting a cigar in victory.
- He most likely doesn't even care about the well-being of the other monsters it unleashes against Hercules, becoming enraged only that the hero survives each of its attacks.
- Upon discovering that Hercules was in love with Megara, Hades manipulates Hercules into temporarily abandoning his powers during and thus freeing Megara, lest Hercules interfere with his goal.
- He also tells Hercules that Megara was working with him the entire time just to taunt him, which demoralizes Hercules and almost destroys his relationship with Megara.
- After finally getting Hercules out of the way, he finally performs his most heinous action by freeing the Titans, a group of destructive monsters whom Zeus had caged for eons, to cause massive destruction and thus aid him in his final plan to overthrow his brother from the throne.
- One of them is shown crushing an entire village with one of his feet and then the Titans are shown causing massive destruction throughout Athena, which definitely must have killed hundreds, maybe even thousands, of innocent people all over the place.
- He also ordered Arges to kill Hercules.
- When the Titans are defeated and destroyed by Hercules, he doesn't care about them, but expresses only anger at being defeated.
- During his escape, he points out to Hercules that Meg is dying and that he will have her soul.
- While he accepted Hercules' deal to rescue Megara in the River Styx, this was to see Hercules die while he was trying to save Megara, as it is practically impossible to save a person's soul while he is in the river.
Trivia[]
- He, the Queen of Hearts, the Walrus, Captain Hook, and Alameda Slim are the only four Silly Pure Evils in the Disney Animated Features Canon.
- On top of that, he the only main villain in the Disney Renaissance other than Ursula to neither be Straight Pure Evil nor a Villainous Benchmark.
- He and Scar are the only Disney Renaissance Pure Evils to be members of Council of Villains.
- Originally, Hades was supposed to be voiced by Jack Nicholson or John Lithgow, both of whom would have portrayed him more seriously.
- Had that gone ahead, Hades would be a Straight Pure Evil rather than a Silly Pure Evil.
- His Live-Action Version may or may not count as Straight Pure Evil or Silly Pure Evil depending if he has redeeming features.
