Bow to my perfect form of beauty.
~ Gyokko shows his full form.

Gyokko (玉壺 ぎょっこ) is a major antagonist in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise, serving as the secondary antagonist of the Swordsmith Village Arc.

He was a powerful and egocentric demon that served as a member of the Twelve Kizuki, holding the position of Upper Rank Five.

As a human, Gyokko lived over a century ago as a fisherman by the name of Managi (益魚儀 Managi) who had a morbid and grotesque sense of art along with an disturbing obsession with fish and human corpses. After murdering a boy who teased him for his repulsive behavior, Managi was nearly killed himself until he was found by Muzan Kibutsuji and transformed into a demon. This granted him the opportunity to indulge in his twisted obsession as a member of the Upper Ranks, until he was finally slain by the Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokiko during the Swordsmith Village Arc.

He is voiced by Kohsuke Toriumi in the Japanese version, who also voiced Szayel Aporro Granz, and by Brent Mukai in the English dub, who also voices Kenzou's Stand: Dragon's Dream.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Gyokko is one of the most evil demons that the Demon Slayer Corps have ever faced, whose actions could have destroyed the swordsmith village.
  • While he seems to revere Muzan, this is merely a twisted form of worship for the Demon Lord.
  • Although Gyokko appears to to be friendly towards the other Upper Rank demons, this is merely faux, as evident by his interactions with the other Upper Ranks:
    • When Doma told him he placed a woman's head on top of his pot like a plant, Gyokko immediately saw it as more inspiration for his "art". While this implies they are friends, there's no confirmation that Gyokko cares about anyone but himself and could just be professional affability rather than genuine. This is more evident when Gyokko sneaks away from Doma and quickly requests Nakime to transport him and Hantengu to the village.
    • He cheerfully greeted Akaza and said the possibility of Akaza being killed made his heart sing, before faking a cough and saying it made his heart sad, which earned a death glare from the Upper Three demon.
  • While he has a lot of comedic moments (mainly him getting angry at Haganezuka not paying any mind to him, his multiple clapping hands, and him and Muichiro roasting each other), it still doesn’t distract from his gruesome and heinous crimes as he is still presented seriously in universe, with some even showing how evil he is, especially when Muichiro’s constant roasting gets him more angry and vengeful.
  • Unlike other demons who kill in a straightforward manner and/or have a tragic backstory (and were turned evil by being transformed into demons), Gyokko was already a horrible person before he became a demon and draws out his victim’s suffering. Unfortunately, becoming a demon allowed him to live out his wildest (and most horrific) fantasies.
    • Although he was treated as an outcast by his village, this isn't played for sympathy and doesn't excuse his monstrous actions.

Background[]

  • Prior to his demon transformation, Gyokko committed unspeakable crimes as a human, which would resulted in him being nearly killed.
    • Instead of mourning his parents’ deaths, Gyokko developed a fascination with their corpses upon seeing their drowned bodies drift out to sea, then wash up and appear on the village’s shore.
    • He killed a child who made fun of his unusual behavior toward fish corpses and put the child's body in a pot used for fishing, foreshadowing him eating children later on.
    • While he was stabbed by the child’s parents and left to die, bleeding out for 12 hours, it was his fault for killing their child in such a gruesome way, so it’s arguably deserved.
  • After becoming a demon, it was stated he has killed many people, specifically children, to either feast on their flesh or used their corpses to create statues out of them, all their corpses mangled while they're still alive, demonstrating his own sadistic means of making "art".
    • The extent of this morbid and violent inspiration for his "art" is shown even more when he brutally murdered several swordsmiths and used their corpses to create a "beautiful" piece by stitching their bodies together along with sticking several swords into them. This extreme sadism is shown even further when he built in the feature of them to scream when a sword is shoved deeper into his "artwork", implying that they were still alive.

Demon Slayer: Kimestu no Yaiba[]

Swordsmith Village Arc[]

  • Gyokko excitedly relayed his information about the location of the swordsmiths' village to Muzan, knowing that wiping out the village would be a devastating blow for Demon Slayers due to losing their supply of weapons.
  • Under Muzan's orders. he traveled to attack the swordsmiths' village alongside Hantengu.
  • After arriving at the village, Gyokko decides to devour an innocent swordsmith, then hid in one of his pots just to spit him back out, stating that he wasn't edible. After this incident, he decides to go in different ways in order to cause as much death and destruction as possible.
  • He sent giant fish amalgamations to kill off all the swordsmiths in their village, likely succeeding in killing dozens of them, and if he finished wiping them out, this would cause the Demon Slayers' sword production to cease, leaving them with no means to defeat the demons if it was not for Mitsuri finishing off the amalgamations in time.
  • He then presents "L'Agonies des Forgerons" to Muichiro, a morbid piece made of several mutilated swordsmiths' bodies stitched together with swords sticking out of them, the worst part being that all the innocent swordsmiths screamed every time Gyokko twisted them with the swords, implying that they were still alive, and finally, he states that he will recreate the piece on a larger scale. This shows that unlike his other Upper Ranks, he is incredibly sadistic and enjoys torturing humans.
  • Tried to kill Muichiro by giving him a painful death, slowly suffocating him with his Water Prison Pot technique to drown him.
  • He attacked Hotaru Haganezuka and slashed his left eye simply because he felt jealous of the swordsmith's focus while he was working on a sword.
  • Once Muichiro mocks his pot, he loses it and attempts to have his fish eat him alive or poison him.
  • When he transforms into a true form, he tells Muichiro to shut up, but then angrily tells him to say something before attempting to turn the young Hashira into fish.
  • Near his demise, he angrily rants about not wanting to lose to Muichiro, who proceeded to slice him up in multiple pieces, as he was tired of his ranting. While his death is played for laughs, it is also portrayed as a karmic end for him.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Pure Evil within the Upper Ranks.
    • He, Enmu and Ubume are the only Pure Evils within the Twelve Kizuki, with Enmu and Ubume originating from the Lower Ranks.
