~ Grima introduces himself to Validar. |
Grima, also known as the Fell Dragon, is a major antagonist of the Archanea Saga within Nintendo's Fire Emblem franchise.
He is the main antagonist and final boss of the 2012 tactical role-playing video game Fire Emblem Awakening, as well as a minor antagonist in it's 2017 prequel Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.
He is the powerful fell dragon that killed Lucina's family and laid waste to the entire world in the future she lived in, transforming it into an apocalyptic hell, prompting her to travel to the present in order to prevent his return. He is one of the leaders of the Grimleal, the master of Validar, and the arch-nemesis of Naga, Chrom, Lucina, and Robin.
He is voiced by Kyle Hebert (who also voices Spec in Baki the Grappler, the Chief Lion in Beastars, and Validar in the same game) in English and Yoshimasa Hosoya in Japanese.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General/Background[]
- Even as an infant, Grima already displayed dark and violet urges that even unsettled his creator Forneus, as he often went on rampages and even showed traces of a personality, such as unnerving smiles towards his creator, indicating he had a complete moral agency.
- Moreover, he chose to refer to himself as the Fell Dragon after being re-awakened, demonstrating that he understands and embraces his villainous nature.
- There is a strong assumption that he murdered Forneus once he realized how dangerous Grima truly was and attempted to kill him. Even though the creator arguably deserved the fate he met for creating Grima, he attempted to do away with him once he realized what a dangerous monster he had created.
- When Alm, Celica, and their party encountered Grima in the final part of the Thabes Labyrinth, he immediately tries to kill them all.
- After being reawakened as Grima the Fell Dragon, it's heavily implied that he made a pact with an evil human being to destroy the entire continent of Ylisse.
- Despite his defeat and being sealed for thousands of years, his actions and influence would lead to the creation of the Cult of the Grimleal, who would go and create the Theocracy of Plegia, and attempt to create several vessels in order for Grima to control so he could wreck havoc on the entire world, with one of the failed ones being Validar, who would become the leader of the cult.
- It's also because of his influence that he's not only indirectly responsible for the crimes of the Grimleal, but also for the long conflict between Plegia and Ylisse,.
- When he is possessing Robin, he keeps their spirit conscious so that they can witness the atrocities he is committing, mainly out of sadism. It is particularly evident in Future Past, when Robin briefly tries to break Grima's control but ultimately fails.
- In addition to being extremely sadistic and arrogant about his crimes, he frequently reminisces about his victims—most notably, the parents of the second generation—just to inflict pain on them.
- Despite the Cult of Grimleal's fanatical devotion to him, he doesn't hold any sentimental value for them and regards them as sacrificial pawns.
- In comparison to most of the dragons in the Fire Emblem franchise that are tragic villains who suffer due to personal issues or tragedy (such as in the case of Duma and Anankos), Grima is a special exception due to his absence of such a tragedy and the fact that he became a genocidal and evil dragon by his own will.
Fire Emblem Awakening[]
Future Timeline[]
- In the future timeline, he managed to possess Robin, and using their body, he would personally kill Chrom and, later on, the entire first generation.
- He would then cause a massive genocide on the entire world, leading to the death of humanity, with the only survivors being the second generation.
- He attacked Lucina one time and nearly killed her, all while taunting her about the fate of her parents, Chrom and her mother (potentially being Sumia, Female Robin, Sully, Maribella, or Olivia).
- His actions and influence caused the second generation to be heavily traumatized as a result of losing their parents and nearly dying, especially in the case of Lucina, who even one time tried to kill Robin out of fear that Grima may possess them and kill Chrom (this is made even worse if Robin is Lucina's husband or her mother).
- When learning that Lucina and the second generation were going back in time to the present to stop him from awakening, he decided to follow in hopes of stopping them from achieving his goals.
Present Timeline[]
- After arriving at the present timeline, he tried to possess the present Robin but failed to do so, drastically weakening his power.
- He saved Validar from dying after his failed assassination on Emmeryn, merely because he needed him to play an important role for his return. This ultimately makes him responsible for continuing on Validar's heinous acts throughout the game.
- He takes control of a mass population of Plegia to commit suicide in order to re-awaken his past version.
- He and his past-self intended to destroy the entire world while trying to kill Chrom, Robin, and the Shepherds.
- During the final battle, he tries to take control of Robin one last time and taunts him about his fate. If not for his bond with Chrom and the other heroes, Robin would've been controlled by Grima.
- If Robin is the one who tries to kill Grima, the Fell Dragon desperately tries to stop them, knowing full well he will die permanently if Robin kills him.
- It's also stated that if Robin kills Grima, then they would also die as a result due to their connection to the Fell Dragon as his vessel. If not for their bond with Chrom and the heroes of first and second generations, Robin would've permanently died as a result.
The Future Past[]
- Similar to the Future timeline, Grima took control of Robin's body. But this time, he also indirectly controls his child Morgan as well (alongside another Morgan from another timeline). He also manages to plunge the world into despair, as he kills most of humanity, including the First Generation heroes.
- His actions also heavily traumatized the Second Generation heroes in the Future Past, such in the case of Lucina, Inigo, Noire, Yarne, and Gerome.
- Grima attempts to stop the Second Generation heroes from gathering the Gemstones to perform the Awakening.
- He attempts to kill Lucina, but Tiki sacrifices her life to protect Lucina from the Fell Dragon's attack.
- He attempts to kill Lucina, Severa, Laurent, and Gerome, grievously wounding them.
- During the final battle, he proceeds to taunt Lucina about the deaths of her friends (although their deaths can be prevented if you rescue them, much to the Fell Dragon's anger).
- He attempts to kill the heroes one last time, trying to overwhelm them with his large Risen army.
- Due to Robin being Grima's vessel, they dies as a result of Grima's permanent death.
