Gregory Ammas Stillson is the main antagonist in the 1983 science-fiction thriller film The Dead Zone, which is based on Stephen King's 1979 novel of the same name.
He is a narcissistic sociopath who believes he's destined to become President of the United States. To get elected, Stillson will do anything to make this happen, no matter how immoral or illegal his actions are.
He was portrayed by Martin Sheen.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Though he presents himself as a man of the people, he's revealed to be a sociopath who only cares about his own career, believing he's destined to be President and states he will let no one stand in his way.
- He breaks into the office of a reporter who was writing a negative story about him, threatening to expose the reporter's extramartial affair to his wife. He then adds if the reporter still defies him, he will have him murdered.
- It's shown that if elected President, he will start a nuclear war and kill many millions of people as he thinks this will secure his legacy. When his general protests that they will go down as the world's worst mass murderers, Stillson forces him to comply by threatening to chop off the man's hand and use it to prepair the missiles for launch. After launching the missiles, he then boasts to his shocked Vice President and secretary of state, who have a diplomatic solution, about having done the deed and he didn't care what they thought.
- He uses a baby as a human shield when Johnny tries to assassinate him, giving his bodyguard and right-hand man Sonny Eliman enough time to fatally shoot Johnny, and a photographer enough time to take a picture of his immoral act and run away to get it developed. When Johnny tells him he's finished, he orders Sonny to find and kill the photographer and destroy the evidence, only for Sonny to refuse. When the photo is developed and Stillson's career ends in disgrace, he commits suicide, showing that in his opinion, he has nothing to live for anymore if he can't be President and kill billions of people.
Trivia[]
- His book counterpart doesn't count as Pure Evil as he has redeeming traits such as caring for his mother, but the film omits this and makes it clear that the nuclear apocalypse he would cause wasn't by accident, but intentional as he specifically rejects the possibility of a diplomatic solution.
