Green Death, also known as Merciless is a major antagonist of the How to Train Your Dragon book series, serving as the main antagonist in the first book, and a posthumous antagonist in the other books.

He is a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus who wanted to devour every Viking on Berk, including Hiccup. He was also the leader of the first Dragon Rebellion and came into conflict with Hiccup the First.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?

• He started the dragon-waged war against humanity a thousand years before Hiccup III was born.
• He ordered one of his minions, Wodensfang to kill Hiccup I, the ancestor of Hiccup the Third, since he knows that Hiccup the third will kill him, but Wodensfang refused.
• He devoured countless ships.
• He devoured a smaller dragon of his kind. It was stated that he did it because he was "full of himself", which is more out of spite than out of hunger.
• Once he was washed ashore on Berk, he says that he is in peace, but he plans to devour everybody on the island, which would include the entire tribes of the Hairy Hooligans and the Meatheads.
• When the Hooligans tricked him into battling the Purple Death, he killed the Purple Death by strangulation.
• He tried to kill Hiccup by swallowing him out of revenge, but Toothless saved him.
• He attempted to kill Hiccup, Stoick and Toothless while relishing in their fear.
• He was fully unexcused from his actions since others of his kind, Wodensfang for example, have the free will to do what is right, which shows that the Green Death has a clear moral agency.

Trivia

• The Red Death from the films was based on him. Interestingly, both are Pure Evil and are the first main antagonists of the stories.
• The Green Death is, alongside Alvin the Treacherous, one of two villains from the How to Train Your Dragon book series to be Pure Evil.
