Gilles de Rais is the main antagonist of the Shingeki no Bahamut anime franchise, serving as the main antagonist of Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis and the overarching antagonist of Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul.
A sorcerer and a feared serial killer, his desire to see the world destroyed and enjoy the spectacle lead him to manipulate everyone in order to free Bahamut, an ancient and destructive beast, so that it could lay waste upon everything and exterminate both Humans, Gods and Demons.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He is the sole responsable for all the events in both series, manipulating everyone as his pawns in order to free Bahamut and unleash it upon the world to destroy it, only so that he could enjoy the spectacle that it would bring.
- His supposed care for Amira, his loyalty for Jeanne and his alliance with Belzebuth are all lies he uses to manipulate them all for his own puropose, directly causing all of them to either die or be traumatized for life because of his actions when he deems them no longer useful for his purposes.
Background[]
- He was a prolific serial killer know across Anatae to leave a mountain of corpses in his wake, with at least ten bodies being visible in his dungeon.
- His fascination with death lead him to orchestrate Bahamut's reawakening, with the objective of letting it destroy everything and kill everyone in the mortal realm, Heaven and Hell.
- Created the fake identities of Lavalley and Martinet, using the latter to trick Belzebuth into helping him free Bahamut, making him believe that if the host of the Trascendent Key was made with his own powers than the beast would obey him.
- This made Belzebuth kidnap an innocent Angel, Nicole, painfully extracting her essence to create Amira and throwing her into a comatose state, with Gilles trapping her in a ice grave to use her later on.
- Created a red pendant to generate false memories inside Amira's head in order to use her as his pawn.
- Instructed Amira to steal the God Key by using her fake memories, telling her that she needed to search for her "mother" Nicole afterwards.
Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis[]
- As Lavalley, he pretends to help the other Orleans Knight in catching Amira, secretly helping her to avoid them stopping his plans.
- As Martinet, he stops Azazel before he can report back to Lucifer, telling him that he would be punished if he came back without the thief of the God Key, making him indirectly responsable for Azazel's attack of Anatae, which caused several casualties.
- Helps Amira escape from prison and lies to her, telling her that he is a friend of her mother and giving them a map to Prudisia where Nicole would be, when in reality said maps leads to Helheim.
- Drugs Charioce XIII in order to make him paranoid of Jeanne, causing his descent into madness.
- This paranoia would than lead him to slaughter all of Jeanne's supporters during her execution, making Gilles directly responsable for this.
- Brutally murders Gaurin by dismembering him, placing one of Jeanne's hair on his body to frame her of the murder and have her imprisoned.
- Tries to manipulate Jeanne while she is in prison, telling her that her Gods abandoned her and humanity as a whole.
- When he finds Rita inside his secret room, he attempts to cut her into pieces.
- During Jeanne's execution, he makes her sees illusion of the Angels she knows that tells her that humans are worthless, making her fall into despair and breaking her faith.
- Manipulates Jeanne into drinking his concoction before she would die from the fire on the stake, turning her into a demon and brainwashing her.
- Taunts Amira by telling her the truth of her birth, revealing that all her life was nothing short of a lie, taking sadistic pleasure in doing so.
- Frees Nicole from her ice grave just so she could die in front of Amira to psychologically break down the girl and force her to fuse with the Demon Key in Helheim, turning her into the Trascendent Key.
- Forces Favaro to drink his concoction, brainwashing him and turning him into a demon.
- Sends the brainwashed Jeanne to kills several angels against her will, including many that she personally knew and protected her.
- Beats down Bacchus when he attempts to stop him from reawakening the Bahamut.
- Sends the brainwashed Favaro to fight against Kaisar, his best friend.
- Stops Kaisar from freeing Amira by taking his human form of Lavalley, before pushing him down the fortress in an attempt to kill him.
- Make Bahamut fuse with the Trascendent Key, reawakening the beast with gleeful sadism.
- Simply by reawakening, Bahamut kills the hundreds of Angels that were attempting to contain it.
- Leaves Belzebuth to die when Bahamut blasts him away, with the last words of the demon being curses at him for tricking him.
- While watching Bahamut kill millions, both within the armies of Gods and Demons that arrived to stop him and within the cities the beast is destroying with its blasts, he laugh sadistically, saying that this is a once in a lifetime spectacle worth watching.
- Sends what he thinks is a brainwashed Favaro against his best friends, resulting in the former cutting the hand of the latter, albeit only to trick Gilles into lowering his guard so that he could kill him with the Bounty Hunter Bracer.
- Despite the fact that Favaro manages to defeat Bahamut by stabbing him in the head, Amira is still lost forever because of his manipulations, something that forever affects the bounty hunter.
Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul[]
- Even after his death, his actions severely affected the world, causing millions of victims between all races, including Charioce XIII and Nina Drango's father.
- As a result of his actions, both the Gods and the Demons suffered sever losses, to the point that the balance between the three races was broken.
- Even ten years after the events, Jeanne d'Arc was still traumatized by what she did while brainwashed by Gilles.
- Despite his defeat, Bahamut would be back in ten years to attempt to destroy the world once more, something that would not have happened if not for Gilles.
- His notes, found in the ruins of the castle where his secret room was, would be the ones to inform Charioce XVII, illegitimate son of Charioce XIII, of Bahamut's imminent return, leading to his quest against the Gods and his enslavement of the Demons.
- While his notes are what allows Charioce to bring down Bahamut the third time, those were written by Gilles during his researches on the beast and were not intended to be used against it.
Trivia[]
- Him and Belzebuth are the only two Pure Evil villains from the Shingeki no Bahamut franchise.
- His name is inspired by the historical figure of the same name, who was a companion-in-arms of Joan d'Arc and is mostly known for being a confessed serial killer of childrens.
