“ | You useless, ungrateful maggot! I AM THE COLONY! | „ |
~ General Mandible's angered villainous breakdown towards Cutter after turning against him for him nearly killing off Z and getting betrayed by him which led him to help Z and The Colony as a result and his last final words and most famous quote before falling into his death after nearly charging towards Cutter before Z saved him. |
“ | Sacrifice. To some, it is just a word. To others, it is a code. A soldier knows that the life of an individual ant doesn't matter. What matters is the Colony. He's willing to live for the Colony. To fight for the Colony. To die for the Colony. At 0800 hours, we received word that the Termite enemy has mobilized. We have no choice but to launch a preemptive strike. You are the Queen's finest. I know you will all do your duty. I am proud to send you into battle. Dismissed. | „ |
~ General Mandible intentionally sending the Queen's troops on a suicide mission to attack the termites. |
General Mandible (simply known as Mandible) is the main antagonist of DreamWorks‘s 1st full-length animated feature film Antz.
He is the former leader of the Queen's army, the former boss of Colonel Cutter, the former fiancé of Princess Bala as well as her and Z's archenemy.
He was voiced by Gene Hackman.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He sent all of the soldier ants that were loyal to the queen to die in a suicidal war against the termites, with Z being the only survivor. The termites themselves are also shown to have been all massacred.
- Attempted to have Z arrested after dancing with Princess Bala, and also because Z survived the earlier massacre.
- Had Z's best friend, Weaver, beaten for information on his whereabouts and has Azteca tortured by his men to get the info, promising he wouldn't kill Z but later goes back on his promise upon receiving the information.
- He then sends Weaver back to working in the tunnels (which he was already doing when he switched places with Z), merely so he would also drown.
- Attempted to destroy the anthill and kill all the worker ants by drowning them.
- The flood would also drown the larvae, which are the literal babies of the colony, and given that none of his soldiers took any with them, he didn't even care to check which of them are soldier material (likely planning to start anew).
- Even more damningly, the flood would've also drowned the queen, who is not only his and the rest of the colony's mother, but is also their only guaranteed source of recovery in the event of an apocalyptic event such as their home drowning, making him also accountable for attempted Regicide and Matricide.
- When Z attempt to reason with him by saying they are colony, he refused to consider his actions and attempt to kill him before Cutter stops him.
- He attempted to kill Colonel Cutter after the latter betrayed him for the right reasons, resulting in his own demise.
- He claims his goal is for the good of the colony and to end all weak elements (aka the worker ants and queen), which is a lie since it would not work as well as a real ant colony without workers. The fact that he doesn't care for killing the soldier ants that aren't loyal to him shows his motive is a selfish one. He even calls himself the colony when trying to kill Cutter, showing he isn’t an extremist.
- His desire to marry Bala, while seemingly sincere at first, is in truth merely lust and so he can create his own offspring of strong ants. This is evident when he locks her up in his office so that she wouldn't stop him.
- While he seemingly considered Cutter a friend and appeared visibly confused and hurt when Cutter punched him, he threw this out the window when he attempted to shove his former right hand to his death.
