What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- As head of the Separatist droid army during the Clone Wars, he effectively orchestrated and committed countless war crimes across the galaxy.
- He killed Jedi and Padawans, adding their lightsabers and braids to his collection. This behavior makes him the Star Wars equivalent to a serial killer who's focused on cops.
- On Count Dooku's orders, he personally leads several devastating attacks, such as:
- Targeting a medical station with over 60,000 wounded clones after blowing up three Galactic Republic cruisers and all the troops inside them with his warship's ion-cannon.
- Launching a surprise attack on Kamino with Asajj Ventress, sacrificing many of his own transports to break through the Republic fleet and ordering his troops to take no prisoners and kill everyone on the planet. This led to the deaths of numerous clones, like 99, a deformed clone.
- Bombing the power grid on Coruscant during a banking deregulation bill to help finance more clones, thus prolonging the war.
- Massacring the Nightsisters after they betrayed Dooku, even personally killing Mother Talzin, much to Maul's horror. As shown in Star Wars Rebels, this would affect him for many years beyond that causing him to act even more brutal than before.
- During the massacre, he kills Morgan Elsbeth's mother right in front of her (by stabbing her with third lightsaber, while his other two were blocked) and then mocks her and the others around with her demand to run before continuing chase.
- This would eventually lead to Morgan becoming the cold and vengeful magistrate of Corvus who cruelly enslaved it's people.
- What's more, the young Nightsister Merrin was left orphaned and with no one to accompany her after Grievous massacred all her clan, later allowing the fallen Jedi Master Taron Malicos to corrupt her by tricking her into believing that the Jedi were the ones who killed her clan, leading Merrin to be hostile to everyone who came to Dathomir.
- He is also responsible for Morgan and other Nightsisters working with Grand Admiral Thrawn in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
- During the massacre, he kills Morgan Elsbeth's mother right in front of her (by stabbing her with third lightsaber, while his other two were blocked) and then mocks her and the others around with her demand to run before continuing chase.
- Invading Florrum to capture Hondo Ohnaka, while also bringing damage to his criminal empire.
- Attacking Coruscant a second time to kidnap Chancellor Palpatine (though Palpatine is also Pure Evil and he was secretly his ally, Grievous didn't know that).
- He used his spy droid R3-S6 to infiltrate the Republic and become Anakin's new droid. This almost got Ahsoka Tano killed. However, when R3-S6 gets destroyed by R2-D2, Grievous cowardly flies away, leaving his pawn to die.
- He agreed to pay Gha Nachkt for R2-D2 and ordered him to check Artoo's memory, but when Nachkt demanded to be paid more due to the droid's value, he stabbed him in the back with his lightsaber and mockingly referred to it as his "bonus".
- Plus, while he might have intended to go through with paying Gha Nackt before his demand for more money, it was likely just for pragmatic reasons since there was no point in killing a person only interested in money. Plus killing him was just petty, subverting whatever "respect" he may have had.
- He sends his pet Gor after Kit Fisto, his Padawan Nahdar Vebb and his small clone trooper platoon for infiltrating his lair, resulting in Commander Fil's death.
- Although he displays rage upon his pet Gor's death, it's less out of actual care for him (as a pet) and more because the Jedi continue to evade him and deprived him of a useful killing machine.
- In a similar manner, he only lets his medical droid talk back to him for pragmatic reasons since he needs his medical skills. Plus unlike Gor, he doesn't even react to the droid's death by Kit Fisto (like, it's easy to rebuild him).
- He mercilessly shoots and kills the inexperienced Nahdar Vebb (while his two lightsabers were blocked by Nahdar's so he couldn't protect himself) in cold blood during their duel.
- He abducts and sadistically tortures Jedi Master Eeth Koth, almost to death. He even shows it to the Jedi via hologram to hurt them mentally. According to Eeth Koth, he has gained a reputation of a murder and coward. Grievous says that it isn't murder to rid the galaxy of "Jedi filth", except it is.
- Although he "compliments" Asajj Ventress, it was only sadistic admiration of the way she brutally killed Commander Colt.
- He kills Captain Roos Tarpals, even sadistically asking him the question of how it feels to die in his final moments. He has also killed several other Gungans as well.
- He seizes a Galactic Republic warship and kills several clone troopers, but later evacuates it to seize Florrum once he became aware that Obi-Wan Kenobi had rigged it to explode, leaving two of his battle droids behind to die.
- He tries to kill Ahsoka Tano and the Jedi younglings (Petro, Katooni, Zatt, Byph, Ganodi and Gungi) so he could collect their lightsabers.
- In the unfinished albeit canon Clone Wars episode "Crystal Crisis", he beheaded the Sugi arms dealer Endente for failing to secure a massive Kyber crystalânow captured by Anakin and Obi-Wan, then fatally impaled the Pau'an Governor Torul Blom for letting the two Jedi escape, mocking Blom's apology before he died.
- In the Kanan comic, he hired Rackham Sear to nearly bomb the Jedi Temple and its countless occupants.
- He invaded the planet of Utapau and almost kills Obi-Wan Kenobi with various weapons and his own bare hands while almost throwing him off before his infamous death.
- He's not truly loyal to Dooku, stating twice that he doesn't care about his politics and only serves him out of his own benefit.
- He and Dooku frequently don't get along, with Grievous showing disdain at being berated and detested by him. There are times when he spitefully cuts the transmission so he didn't have to hear him anymore.
- While he does save Dooku from being killed by Mother Talzin, he only did it so he can continue serving him out of his own benefit and to cause as much carnage as possible, not out of any care for him. Furthermore, he walked slowly even though Dooku told him to hurry.
- In Son of Dathomir, his lack of true care for Dooku is evident when he even goes out of his way to threaten him for being "useless" and telling him he would take his lightsaber as well.
- While he is respectful of Dooku before leaving for Dathomir bowing in his presence and addressing Dooku as "Master", it is only to get on his good side.
- Though he does feel concerned over Dooku's death during his talk with Sidious, it is less out of any concern for him and more about who will lead the Separatists.
- He also only took pride that Dooku trained him in the Jedi arts and that is all.
- He regularly destroys or abuses the battle droids under his command whenever he loses his temper, deeming them useless. He's even abandoned his entire crew to die several times, most notably in Revenge of the Sith by launching all the escape pods at once with only him inside one.
- He also smashed apart a Droideka that was in the way, showing even the non-Battle Droids are not safe from his wrath.
- He knocked a battle droid off a bridge simply for complimenting Obi-Wan's fighting skills
- He remorselessly threw a battle droid that was boarding an escape pod out of it just so he himself could board
- He left R3-S6 on the Separatist Listening Post without even bothering to rescue him.
- He is shown to not care for the well being of his droids whatsoever, as he would not let them recharge or even ride with him while marching on Saleucami, even killing one for informing him about this.
- This aspect of Grievous' character is also given heavy emphasis in a side-story called "The Droid with a Heart", where he callously rips apart a tactical droid as punishment for refusing to let thousands of his own kin go on a suicide mission.
- To his credit, he treats his Magnaguards and organic allies somewhat better than he treats regular battle droids. He never takes out his frustration on them or abuses/kills them when they fail like he does with regular battle droids.
- However, that seems to only be because the Magnaguards are actually skilled in combat and more effective and the organic allies are competent and valuable assets. He still had no problem leaving both to die and no sadness when he sees his guards be destroyed.
- While he does show respect to Darth Sidious, it's more out of professionalism rather than true care. He also made it clear that he couldn't care less about the politics of the Sith.
- Although he doesn't try to destroy entire planets like other main Star Wars villains do, due to his limited resources, he canât be compared to Emperor Palpatine or Tarkin, and regardless, he makes up for it with the sheer consistent quantity of crimes that can be laid directly at his feet.
- His kill count is just as high as Grand Moff Tarkin's infamous destruction of Alderaan, if not higher.
- While he does have some comedic moments such as him getting easily angry at his Battle Droids and his cough, Grievous and his crimes are taken 100% seriously in universe.
- Despite being a cyborg, he has a clear moral agency; he's evil and proud of it. Furthermore, he admits that he chose to be the way he is just to become stronger and lacks any sort of Freudian Excuse whatsoever. The canon reason why he hates Jedi is never truly explained either and his actions likely push him far past it.
Trivia[]
- Only his Canon counterpart qualifies for Pure Evil status, as his Legends version (while committing far more heinous crimes) has a very tragic backstory, a questionable moral agency and some redeeming qualities.
