Gabriel Miller, also known as Subtilizer in Gun Gale Online, and Emperor Vecta in Project Alicization, is a major antagonist of the Sword Art Online franchise. He serves as the main antagonist of the second half of the Alicization Arc in Sword Art Online.

He is voiced in Japanese by Akira Ishida (who also voiced Fyodor Dostoyevsky in Bungo Stray Dogs, Ryuunosuke Uryuu in Fate/Zero and Keera L. Greenwood in How Not to Summon a Demon Lord) and by Greg Chun (who also voices Muzan Kibutsuji in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) in the English dub.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?

• Gabriel is charismatic, manipulative, intelligent (despite his insanity), sociopathic, sadistic, bloodthirsty and devoid of anything remotely resembling empathy.
• He experimented on animals as a child to further study the nature of a soul. He later experimented on humans, killing many.
• He killed his closest friend Alicia Klingerman as a child simply to see what the nature of her soul was like.
• Attempts to capture Alice for his own selfish desires.
• As Emperor Vecta, he ordered the Dark Territory Army to invade the Human Empire, in an attempt to obtain Alice.
• He choked and killed Lipia, before literally eating her soul, and then showing her frozen decapitated head to her fiancée Vixur before killing him as well.
  • When Shasta attempts to kill him to avenge Lipia, he couldn't do so because he felt Gabriel "lacked a soul".
• Approves the murder of 3,000 of his own Dark Territory Army, including Orc Leader Lilpirin's wife, Lenju, to fuel Dee Eye Ell's spell.
• He ordered his team to create a fake beta test website of a Japanese game, inviting tens of thousands of unsuspecting VRMMO players across the world.
  • With his subordinate Vassago leading them, he tricked the Real-world players into slaughtering the Underworld inhabitants, including their own Dark Territory forces, under the lie of them being invading American testers.
  • As the Underworld was a simulation rather than a game, there is no damage absorber, resulting in any injury within Underworld to feel real, causing multiple psychological injuries to thousands of players who either injured or "died" while playing.
• Shows no care for the deaths of any of his soldiers. During a battle between the Human Empire Army, his Dark Territory forces, and the Real-world players slaughtering both factions, he used the confusion to kidnap Alice and leaves for the World End Altar.
• He taunted Bercouli for trying to defeat him, save Alice, and avenge those he killed. While he was eventually defeated in his Emperor Vecta form, he caused enough for Bercouli to succumb to his injuries not long after.
  • He also mocked several other characters (including Kirito, Sinon, and Alice) for giving their lives to save another.
• Returned to Underworld as Subtilizer, he fought Sinon out of pure sadism than her being any real threat to him.
• Attempting to devour Sinon's and Kirito's souls, the former through mind control, and the latter through consuming his heart.
• Has caused the deaths of countless Underworld inhabitants both directly and indirectly, as well as inflicted psychological injuries to thousands of real world players.

Trivia

• He, alongside Nobuyuki Sugou and Shouichi Shinkawa, are the only Sword Art Online Pure Evils, although Dee Eye Ell, Morte and Emperor Cruiga Norlangarth VI are likely to count as well.
