People are sinful and foolish. Even knowing full well that they’re being tricked and manipulated into doing so, humans can’t help but engage in the act of killing each other. I seek the Book in order to cleanse them of this sin.
~ Fyodor's reason for obtaining the Book.
People can be so simple. They truly believe they are thinking for themselves. [...] If they discover something themselves, they see value in that. They don't want to think they're being led by the nose.
~ Fyodor's beliefs on human rationality.

Fyodor Dostoevsky is the main antagonist of the Bungo Stray Dogs franchise.

Fyodor is the leader of an underground organization called the Rats in the House of the Dead and is the founder and former member of the Decay of the Angel. His goal is to find the reality altering book that's hidden deep within Yokohama to use it and rid the world of all its ability users because he sees them as sin. Because of his very high level of intellect, Fyodor is one of the most difficult opponents the Armed Detective Agency has ever faced. He serves as both the acquaintance and archenemy of Osamu Dazai. He is based off of the famous Russian author with the same name.

He is voiced in Japanese by Akira Ishida (who also voiced Ryuunosuke Uryuu in Fate/Zero, Keera L. Greenwood in How Not to Summon a Demon Lord and Gabriel Miller in Sword Art Online) and by Ray Chase (who also voiced Gabriel in Malignant and Ace Killer in ULTRAMAN) in the English dub.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • While he has good mannerisms and always speaks in a polite and respectful manner to others, it is only a façade to hide his sinister nature and most of his polit moments are for pragmatic reasons such as him freeing Mushitarō from his captors and casually greets him only so he can use his ability to cover his tracks.
  • Unlike Mori, Francis, and Fukuchi who show respect towards their enemies and have some signs of respect and care for their subordinates, Fyodor holds no respect or care for anyone ally or not, seeing everybody as a means to an end and a way for him to get closer to his goals. Even Nikolai, who looks at Fyodor as a best friend and is always positive around him, is never treated the same way by Fyodor making their "friendship" entirely one sided. To add on to that, when Fyodor "died", Nikolai even admits that the two of them never talked to each other much.
  • Fyodor had his share of comedic moments and moments that make him seem human, especially in the manga and specifically at times like when he and Dazai were cell neighbors and he called for a "happy group counseling session" to talk about their life troubles, and when they got out of their cells. His scenes of him showing a human side consist of him showing good mannerisms when he's either by himself or around other people; despite all of that however, the story will always circle back to painting Fyodor as the most dangerous antagonist in the series, and the crimes he committed during the Cannibalism and the Decay of the Angel's global terrorism were never taken lightly and were enough to shake not only Yokohama but the entire world. Both conflicts of which Fyodor is heavily responsible for and the aftermaths of them both fitting into his plans exactly like he wants them to. Overall, the author gives Fyodor moments of hilarity and humanity to hide how much of a manipulative monster he is and Dazai along with the rest of the cast take Fyodor vary seriously as a threat and view him as a very dangerous and evil person that took the efforts of the Armed Detective Agency, the Port Mafia, The Guild leader, and the government to defeat. His actions were also enough to make Ranpo who is known for his goof ball and intelligent nature become serious. Even during the “happy group counseling session”, Fyodor’s word of advice to Dazai about the cafe waitress rejecting him involved getting her fired and having her family abandoned her, which goes to show how dark and twisted his sense of humor is.
  • While it does seem like he respects Dazai due to how they're two sides of the same coin, Fyodor's "respect" for Dazai is mostly just him feeling amusement of going up against someone equal to him in terms of intellect rather than admiring him for his talent or skills and when he and Dazai became cell neighbors, his excitement over it was due to the fact that he was bored of everything being perfect in his plans rather than being happy to see him out of genuine friendliness.
    • It is also apparent that Fyodor has a personal dislike towards Dazai, evident to how annoyed he was when the detective discovered him at his escape route and even gleefully imagined Dazai drowning to death before their prison break game.
    • When he "defeats" Dazai during the jailbreak, he thinks about how the latter was capable of dealing physical damage to him. Despite thinking to himself that Dazai was his most formidable foe since a certain someone he met in the past, he shortly after that thinks to himself that Dazai never amounted to much due to him "dying" to the slightest of injuries.
  • Majority of the conflicts and tribulations the Armed Detectives Agency went through in the story (excluding the prequel spin offs) all connect back to Fyodor, who has played a big hand in all of them happening including their battle against Shibusawa and their battle against Fukuchi.
  • Although his goal of wanting to create a world without ability users makes sense due to majority of the bad things in the series happening because of an ability user and despite seeing himself as someone following Gods will, as the story progresses (especially after Fukuchi's defeat), it becomes apparent that he's a lying hypocrite who is by no means an extremist and has no problem exploiting the abilities of others to further his goals or cover up his tracks and using his ability for an incalculable number of years or centuries to take over his killers' bodies.

Past[]

Main Series[]

  • He is the one who manipulated Fukuchi into forming the Decay of the Angel and starting the global terrorism making him directly responsible for the crimes that Fukuchi, Nikolai, Sigma, and Bram committed in the present day.
    • He also proposed to Fukuchi to sacrifice 500 lives in order for the terrorism plot to be a legitimate threat.

DEAD APPLE[]

  • He tipped off Shibusawa about Atsushi's ability being one of a kind which led to Shibusawa torturing Atsushi and Atsushi killing Shibusawa. Shibusawa's ability then manifested into the original Shibusawa and would later be taken in by the government to put an end to the Dragon's Head Conflict, which was labelled as the darkest conflict in Yokohama's history. However, he just made the conflict even worse in the end with Fyodor watching the conclusion to all of it chuckling and saying, "This is too much fun".

Present[]

Main Series[]

  • He assisted The Guild in placing a bounty of 7 billion yen on Atsushi's which would urge the Port Mafia to attack him and the Detective Agency and have a few lives get caught in the crossfire.
    • His partnership with The Guild was never anything genuine as he would later on steal the group's assets when they were dispended.
  • He took advantage of The Guild's defeat and attempted to crash the Moby Dick into Yokohama and according to Francis, the flying fortress weighs a total of 29,000 tones and would explode if dropped from 6,500 ft destroying the whole city and killing thousands of innocent people.
  • When former Guild member, Nathanial, joins the Rats in the House of the Dead on the condition that Fyodor provides his friend Margaret some medical treatment, Fyodor never makes any commitment to help her and brainwashes Nathanial by erasing his sense of reasoning and removing his memories of everything other than her, using his desire to save her for his own benefits
  • Tricked his captor Ace into believing that his ability allows him to control space and consciousness and that the only way to escape and return to the real world was to eliminate themselves in the ability created space. This however leads to Ace actually killing himself. Despite Ace being a very bad person himself thus making his death well deserved, tricking him into killing himself was an act far worse than anything Ace was seen doing.
    • After killing Ace and steeling some documents he had, he massacred everyone on the ship he was held captive on to make sure there were no witnesses.
  • Spreads disinformation about The Guild's leftover fortune in order to lure criminal organizations to Yokohama and spread crime throughout the city. One of the groups ransacked the cafe the Detective Agency hangs out at and wounds the cafe's owner by taking his thumbnail.
  • He starts an operation called "Cannibalism", infecting Fukuzawa and Mori with a virus ability that could only be stopped if one out of the two of them died before before 48 hours was up. This caused an all-out battle between the Agency and the Port Mafia to save their respective leaders leading to chaos in Yokohama and nearly resulting in a lot of civilian casualties to which the Detective Agency was hoping would not happen.
    • To make sure the Detective Agency doesn't change the rules to the Cannibalism, he uses armed children to keep them in-between a rock and a hard place.
    • He manipulates a little girl into believing she can save her brother by blowing herself up in order to take Kunikida out. However, he manipulates the girl into doing that just to break Kunikida's spirit.
    • It is heavily implied that he lobotomized his subordinate Ivan, removing his "unhappiness" turning him into a psychotic minion who sees him as the only thing that is worthy of protecting in the world.
    • He threatens one of the Mafia's mafiosos to tell him if the Cannibalism has ended or not by placing a bomb in his necktie. When the mafioso gives him the information he wanted to know, Fyodor tells him to disable the bomb by removing the blue wire only for the bomb to blow up and kill him.
    • While the agency and the mafia were hunting him down, he uses a man handcuffed and with a damaged vocal cord as bait and in the anime, the man was handcuffed with grenades.
  • Not only did he have the little girl blow herself up just to drive Kunikida to disperse, but to also frame him for murder.
  • During the Decay of the Angel's terrorism plot, he was making it more difficult for the Armed Detective Agency to prove that they're innocent.
    • Sent Nathanial to assassinate Francis so the Agency wouldn't be able to ask for his assistance.
    • Writing on the reality altering page that all law enforcement groups will ignore any evidence that leads to the Agency's innocents.
  • He poisons the drinks of the Order of the Clock Tower agents while they were delivering One Order to Japan having the plane loose altitude and descend into the airport almost crashing into it.
  • Despite being the one who recruited Sigma into the Decay of the Angel and giving him a home in the Sky Casino, Fyodor never saw Sigma as anything other than a pawn who will only be disposed of after outliving his usefulness like how he was treated before meeting Fyodor. He unexpectedly betrayed him by having Nathanial attempt to assassinate him after he played his part at the Sky Casino adding on to the fact that he never cared about Sigma as an ally. Dazai even says that Fyodor would have killed Sigma if he hadn't chosen the latter to help him escape the prison.
  • Even though Chuuya was never a vampire, Fyodor was willing to use Chuuya as a human weapon when in the past he underwent experimentation to become a human weapon, adding on to Fyodor's cruelty and lack of morality.
  • Killing the time stopping ability user who was helping Dazai in cold blood despite her pleading.
  • Attempted to drown and burn Dazai and Sigma in the elevator and when that failed, programed the elevator to fast fall leaving Dazai's leg broken.
  • Wrote a letter in Russian translating to "Help me." and had a "breakdown" tricking Sigma into believing he had split personality disorder only so Sigma can let his guard down and go in for a stab.
  • Although Fyodor commends Nikolai for fighting to lose himself, him saying that is more so out of psychologically manipulating the jester into joining his side than out of respect or friendship and when he escapes the prison, he threatens to kill Nikolai with a stern yet amused look on his face.
  • After Taking over Bram's body, he kills Fukuchi and combines his ability with the power of Amenogozen and the Holy Sword Soluz Levni, turning Fukuchi's dead corpse into a tripolar singularity being with godlike power called Ame-no-gozen.
  • Mentally messes with Aya about Bram's promise to protect her.
  • Ordered Ame-no-gozen to kill Teruko, who was in love with Fukuchi and was his most loyal and trusting ally in the Hunting Dogs.
  • Casually and smugly reveals to Fukuzawa that the World War Fukuchi was trying to prevent was a lie he made up by creating a fake prophecy that looked believable, thus making the terrorism plot Fukuchi started, his sacrifice and the 500 or so lives he sacrificed for world peace be for nothing.
    • He then coldly tells Fukuzawa that Fukuchi's actions and dream for world peace were all a charade which justifiably angers Fukuzawa thus making his animosity toward Fyodor grow even more.
  • He orders Ame-no-gozen to destroy the airport having Fukuzawa and Aya get caught in the crossfire of the destruction. He then pits Ame-no-gozen against Kunikida, Junichiro, and Kenji resulting in all three of them getting killed and Atsushi breaking down in sadness after witnessing their deaths.

DEAD APPLE[]

  • Helps Shibusawa steal abilities from ability users and turn them into gems. Shibusawa confirms that majority of them that he got was thanks to Fyodor's information and the movie confirms that the disappearances of ability users were 128 and the ability users that dies were over 500 making Fyodor play a hand in 628 or more lives being lost and endangered.
  • Tricks Dazai into using his nullification ability on the unification ability thus creating a giant red dragon made up of the abilities that he and Shibusawa collected, with the dragon going on a rampage if Chuuya had not defeated it.
  • Revives Shibusawa turning him into a powerful singularity causing his ability consuming fog to turn red and spread faster. The fog was projected to engulf the entire world within 168 hours until Earth becomes a "dead apple", and the Order of the Clock Tower deployed an incineration-type ability user to burn Yokohama to the ground to prevent the fog's spread.
  • While Fyodor had a decent partnership with Shibusawa, the two of them were only using each other for their own benefit and Fyodor didn't even show any concern about Shibusawa’s death at the end of the movie.

Trivia[]

  • He is the first and so far, only character from Bungo Stray Dogs to be on this wiki.
  • The anime adaptation of Bungo Stray Dogs: The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency heavily implies that he was behind the events of the V incident and that V are the original Decay of the Angel. If true, then that makes him being tied to the major conflicts in the present-day timeline of the series even more believable.
