“ | Dojyaaa~~n! | „ |
~ Valentine's catchphrase, best translated as "Ta-daaa!". |
“ | That is all because in the reality of this human world, it is impossible for every person to be happy. In the shadow of happiness there is cruelty. There is always a balance between the positives and negatives. That's what the Holy Corpse is!! For argument's sake, think of what'd happen were it handed over to some rule-flaunting low-life bastard of the other side of the world. He would only think of using it for things he wants, low-life things. One can only imagine what deplorable events would then be store for the future of this country.... That is one scenario which I must prevent. As president, it is my sworn duty...! In this world to guarantee the safety of the people of my country. That is what it all comes down to! | „ |
~ Valentine on his goals. |
“ | My heart and actions are utterly unclouded! They are all those of "justice". | „ |
~ Valentine before betraying and attempting to shoot Johnny, his last words. |
President Funny Valentine is the main antagonist of the 2004 manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part VII: Steel Ball Run.
He is the United States President who wanted to obtain the Saint's Corpse to make the United States the best country in the world.
In the video games JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: All Star Battle, JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: Eyes of Heaven, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: All Star Battle R, he was voiced by Yasuyuki Kase.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Despite having the intention of using the Saint's Corpse to benefit the people of America, this doesn't make him a well-intentioned extremist, as he has no problem sacrificing his own people's lives to reach his goals. Moreover, this act would send the rest of the world into eternal chaos or even completely destroyed.
- Even his "noble intentions" are fundamentally flawed. While it might seem like he's striving to make America a better nation, his vision of making it better isn't about benefiting the people, but rather turning America into the most powerful force in the world, no matter the cost.
- While he does have some comedic moments, some of which are comprised of saying “Dojyan(Ta-da)” sometimes out of nowhere, these moments are too brief to detract from his heinousness. Besides, this wouldn’t be able to really qualify due to pretty much every JoJo main antagonist having some comedic moments.
- Even if he had to compete with the insanely high heinous standards of the original continuity, he would easily pass them for his pedophilia and attempting to bring chaos to the rest of the world just to make America superficially better, making him the most heinous villain in the SBR continuity and rather high even in the original continuity itself.
- Although Funny Valentine is widely considered as a three-dimensional and complex villain, this doesn't make him sympathetic nor morally ambiguous, as his arousing delusional jingoism subverted all his redeeming qualities he once had.
Background[]
- While he has a past of losing his father and being tortured during the American Civil War, he exaggerates how this tragedy affected him and uses this as a false excuse to justify his actions.
- Although he used to respect and love his father, keeping a napkin in his memory and even used D4C to apparently try and find his father in another universe, this affection gradually shifted into a fanatical worship to justify his jingoism, as is shown when he uses it as a means to manipulate Johnny.
- Despite seemingly being fond of his wife, Scarlet Valentine, he didn’t care when she was killed, subverting that redeeming quality.
Steel Ball Run[]
- As President, he set up the Steel Ball Run as a ploy to try and find all eight pieces of the Saint's Corpse in order to make America better at the cost of other countries.
- On top of this, the Steel Ball Run caused many people to get injured and possibly killed.
- Sends out many assassins, being Stand users themselves, to try and kill Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli after finding a corpse part.
- After uncovering Lucy’s infiltration as his wife, attempted to rape the young girl in order for her to bare his child.
- He never shown any care towards the assassins he sent to kill Johnny and Gyro, as he ends up shooting Axl RO in the neck for resurrecting Johnny Joestar.
- Sent Diego Brando and Wekapipo into a dimension hop, which caused them to accidentally paralyze Johnny Joestar.
- Killed Wekapipo by merging him with himself from another dimension.
- Forced an innocent train engineer to constantly make the train advance, trapping him halfway inside a mirror while killing an alternate self so that the train engineer must always hold the acceleration lever or die.
- When Diego attacked Funny Valentine and tackled him into a train, Valentine used his Stand to retreat, causing Diego to get ripped apart by the train.
- Tricked Hot Pants by going in the train and used Lucy’s transforming stand Ticket To Ride to send objects flying at Hot Pants, impaling her instantly and killing her.
- Abused Lucy Steele to try and use her Ticket to Ride and his Love Train to kill Gyro Zeppeli.
- He used Love Train to transfer all of Johnny's attacks onto innocent people, causing many deaths while showing zero remorse about it.
- When Johnny throws Valentine an empty gun, suspicious that he has another gun, Valentine attempts to say he does not have another gun before instantly drawing it, trying to kill Johnny, before leading to his own death.
- Even after his death, he managed to send an Alternate Universe Diego Brando to try and kill Johnny and his allies one last time.
Trivia[]
- Funny Valentine is often considered as one of the most complex Pure Evils in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise. Unlike most other JoJo Pure Evils such as DIO and Diavolo who are already irredeemable when the story starts, Funny used to have many redeeming qualities, such his patriotism and love for his father and wife. Ironically, it is that same patriotism shifting into jingoism that fully corrupted him, making him lose all his redeeming qualities to become the Pure Evil villain he is.
- He was also considered Near Pure Evil for a long time until it was agreed he subverted all his redeeming qualities and good intentions by the end.
- Hirohiko Araki's book Manga in Theories and Practice uses the following words to describe Funny Valentine: "In the JoJo arc Steel Ball Run, the major villain is the deeply patriotic President Valentine, and from that perspective his stated goals may be more just—in fact, I suspect his intentions line up with those of our real-world leaders. But he's willing to sacrifice powerless people to achieve just ends, and that part of his character is, to the minds of the protagonist and the reader, unquestionably and unforgivably evil. Because of this, the character of President Valentine could never be the protagonist." This shows Funny is written to be evil, not righteous or well-intentioned as he claims to be.
- He doesn't count as Pure Evil in the non-canon video game known as JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: Eyes of Heaven because he sided with the Joestars to defeat Heaven Ascended DIO in order to save the Multiverse, and he died fighting with honor.
