The blood of Ymir must not die out. If you die, my daughters, have your grandchildren eat your spines. If my grandchildren die, their spines will be passed from child to child. To all of my progeny. My Eldians will rule the lands of this land with their massive frames. And my Titans will continue their reign. Into eternity, so long as this world of mine remains.
~ Fritz's desire to rule the world even after death.

King Fritz is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside the source of all living matter) of the Attack on Titan franchise.

He was the King of Eldia roughly 2,000 years ago who used the power of one of his slaves, Ymir, to expand his empire. Since he was the one who started the use of Titans, he is responsible for the events of the entire Attack on Titan series.

He was voiced by Eizou Tsuda in Japanese and Kenny James in English.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Before rising to power, he led a ruthless barbarian tribe that regularly performed village raids and had the remaining survivors enslaved while cutting out their tongues. He would even go as far as threaten to kill every single one of his slaves because one of them freed a pig without bothering to perform an investigation. Upon finding out that it was Ymir, he mockingly sent her to be hunted down for sport.
    • In the anime version, blood can be seen running down from one of Ymir's eyes, implying she received the punishment of getting one eye gouged out before being released into the woods for the hunt.
  • When Ymir discovered the power of the Titans, Fritz used her to conquer enemy nations such as Marley, spreading his dominance across the entire world and taking countless innocent lives, while enslaving the Marleyans he conquered. He even forced Ymir to cultivate his lands, build roads and bridges, and mountain paths, and make his tribe prosper and become wealthier.
    • As a "reward" for Ymir's contributions to his empire, Fritz forced Ymir to bear his children, effectively making her a sex slave. Despite Ymir's efforts to gain his genuine love, Fritz did not return her feelings and saw her as nothing but his personal tool, even spending time with other women and girls, whilst Ymir watched in misery and envy.
  • He started the path of supremacism of the Eldian Empire, who followed his brutal customs for generation, murdering most of the world's population through multiple mass genocides.
  • When Ymir jumped in front of Fritz to stop a Marleyan soldier's spear from hitting him, instead of thanking her, Fritz told her to get up, stating that a mere spear could not possibly kill her, making it clear that he still viewed Ymir only as a tool and that she only had to serve him as his slave and it was her only purpose in life, despite living around her for thirteen years, displaying an inability to develop attachments and personal connections.
  • He is horribly abusive and uncaring towards not only Ymir, despite her loyalty and undeserved love towards him, as he would instead show interest in his other concubines, but also to his daughters whom he forced to eat the entire corpse of their mother to ensure that Ymir's power was not lost.
    • He is so ungrateful for that even when she jumped in front of him to stop a spear from hitting him, instead of thanking her or helping her, he rudely told her to get up, stating that she still had to serve him as his slave and it was her only purpose in life.
  • At his death bed, he told his three daughters to keep multiplying to spread more Titans across the world and continue the cycle of having their remains consumed by their children to ensure that Eldia could continue to rule over the world with the power of the Titans forever.
  • Ymir became so emotionally broken by his abuse that even after her death she continues to mindlessly serve whoever called upon her power, by hand-building Titans of destructions, believing it was her duty towards the Royal Family, no matter which country or side required the power of the Titans. This lead on for over 2000 years. Furthermore, by using her as a scapegoat for his crimes, Ymir’s name became tainted throughout history, while Fritz became long forgotten and got off scot-free for his crimes.
  • His actions indirectly started the entire events and major wars of the series and resulted in a countless number of deaths, as Eldia followed Fritz's ideology for centuries, albeit eventually less extreme.
  • Compared to other villains, who have many redeeming qualities, some being extremists (especially the Yeager brothers), have tragic backgrounds, and aren't evil by choice, it is proven that Fritz possesses none of those and has done all of this for his personal gain and started the Subjects of Ymir to carry on his legacy and to posthumously continue his reign of terror even after death.
    • Overall, he shows no humanity throughout his short appearances, nor ever displays any genuine affections towards his family, his people and fellow warriors, or his lovers and concubines. He is indirectly referred to many times as the Devil of All Earth in the current day.

Trivia[]

  • Fritz is the only Pure Evil of Attack on Titan. Basically, the characters in Attack on Titan have very ambiguous boundaries between good and evil, even the Yeager brothers who are the Big Bads, except for Fritz and the two Pure Goods, Falco Grice and Artur Braus.
  • Fritz is sometimes mistakenly referred by the fanbase as "Karl Fritz", which is the name of a descendant king of Eldia, who lived during the Great Titan War many centuries after Fritz's death, was a self-hating pacifist who sided with humanity against Eldia, moved the kingdom to Paradis Island, and created the Walls.
