| ~ Frieza introducing himself |
Frieza (alternatively spelled as "Freeza") is the main antagonist of the Dragon Ball franchise.
He is the self-proclaimed "Emperor of the Universe," whose goal is to conquer the universe and achieve immortality. He made his debut as the main antagonist of the Namek saga and ever since then, he has become one of the most popular villain in the franchise, and the most recurring one.
He was ultimately responsible for the destruction of Planet Vegeta, killing most of the Saiyan Race, and is the arch-nemesis of Son Goku and Vegeta.
He is voiced by Ryūsei Nakao (who also voiced his brother, Cooler) in the Japanese version and by Linda Young, the late Pauline Newstone, Lee Tockar (Who also voiced Zaobera in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and Makuta Teridax in the Bionicle animated films, the late Christopher Ayres, and currently Daman Mills in the English version, who also voices Spooky in Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- While it is implied that he was raised to become the evil monster he is today by his father, King Cold, Frieza is clearly past it. Even when doing his heinous actions, Frieza mainly does it because of how vengeful and sadistic he is. For example, when he got resurrected but not his father, he still was vengeful against Goku and his friends for causing his first death and he is still committing heinous actions even if his father is no longer with him.
- Frieza also had shown multiple times that he is proud of his evilness, and despite being put in Hell for years and knowing he could leave if he atoned for his sins, Frieza refuses to change himself or feel any remorse for his actions, further showing that he has no moral agency issues despite his father supposedly raising him to be the monster he is today.
- He looks for immortality to rule Universe 7 forever, as shown when he was furious for Namek's Dragon Balls becoming stones as well as when he was not given a chance to use the Super Dragon Balls to make a wish that would "wrap the gods around his finger" so he could not have anyone to oppose him.
- He is shown to be incredibly racist towards Saiyans, as he constantly calls them "monkeys", as well as several other monkey, ape and simian related words and insults.
- He runs the Planet Trade Organization, where he and his men wipe out entire alien species and sell their planets for profit, giving him one of the highest body counts above those of most other villains in the Dragon Ball franchise.
- He regularly kills his subordinates, as seen in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' and Dragon Ball Super, despite their loyalty to him. Even after he started treating them better, he still killed one for calling him "short".
- Although he respects Captain Ginyu and the Ginyu Force and doesn't mind their habit of dancing and posing, it's only out of pragmatism as they are valuable to him due to their high power levels. Not to mention that when Vegeta killed Ginyu on Earth, Frieza didn't seem to care about his death one bit and even laughed.
- Although he told Vegeta how he cared about him and gave him special treatment, it was clear he only saw Vegeta as a useful pawn rather than any real care, as he was more than willing to brutally and sadistically torture him for his betrayal, mocked his tearful confession to Goku and showed no remorse when he killed him.
- His relationship with Berryblue is unclear. He appears to be much more lenient with her behavior than he is with anyone else (other than Ginyu Force), as he did not threaten her when she commented on his short height. Since Berryblue was his childhood nanny, this may imply a form of fondness. However, given how Frieza was willing to betray Universe 7, not caring if his universe would have been wiped out, which would kill Berryblue as well, this is left ambiguous.
- Although he does have a few comedic moments, he is still taken 100% seriously as a dangerous threat and is never once truly played for laughs.
- His crimes are so heinous that nearly everyone in the entire franchise, hero or villain, hates and resents him for his deeds, including many heinous villains like Beerus, King Vegeta, Frost, the Heeters, Cell, and even his brother Cooler, with the last two also being Pure Evil.
- Because of his evil nature, he was sentenced to Hell twice by King Yemma.
- Despite the astronomically high heinous standards of the Dragon Ball franchise, Frieza stands out for the following reasons:
- He's been responsible for numerous deaths in the franchise, both directly and indirectly, especially for destroying Planet Vegeta, which kickstarted the events of the franchise.
- Despite the fact he did not intend for a few of these deaths and a few victims arguably deserved their fates, he brushes them off.
- His extreme personal villainy to Goku and Vegeta is unique, as he not only destroyed their home planet and their parents with it, but he also went after everyone they loved and even killed them all at one point out of spite for their association with them, despite them not being a threat to him.
- While fighting his enemies, he prefers to prolong their pain by brutally torturing them, as opposed to some of his associates, as seen with Nail, Vegeta, Piccolo, Gohan, Goku, and Krillin, something that few villains have done.
- While mass mundicide is shared with multiple villains, Frieza is especially cruel and sadistic while destroying the planets.
- He's been responsible for numerous deaths in the franchise, both directly and indirectly, especially for destroying Planet Vegeta, which kickstarted the events of the franchise.
Background[]
- When King Cold arrived on Planet Vegeta to introduce the Saiyans to his son Frieza, the latter killed three of them for trying to shoot him and to demonstrate how the Scouters work.
- He killed King Vegeta with a fatal laser.
- After hearing of the legend of the Super Saiyan (and Super Saiyan God) and fearing that the Saiyans would betray him, he destroyed Planet Vegeta, wiping out the Saiyan race and having hundreds of his own men killed with no hesitation, including Bardock and Gine (who were Goku and Raditz's parents). What's more cruel of him is that he shot the giant energy ball directly to Bardock, who was protecting the planet from him.
- This means he destroyed the world that Goku, Vegeta, Raditz, Nappa, Paragus, Broly, Tarble, and Turles were born in.
- Although he chose to spare Vegeta's life by having him sent away on an off-world mission when he went to wipe out the planet, it was only because he saw Vegeta's potential and viewed him to be too useful to kill off rather than genuine care.
- Immediately after destroying Planet Vegeta, he laughed with psychotic glee, describing the explosion as "fireworks" and a "great show".
- Although it was later revealed in the canon movies and Dragon Ball Super that it was Beerus who asked him to destroy the planet from the start, this doesn't count as prevention since he already wanted to destroy Planet Vegeta due to fear of having to face a Super Saiyan, so it really didn't matter.
- In order to ensure their loyalty to him, he lied to all remaining Saiyan survivors across the universe that Planet Vegeta was destroyed by a meteor.
- He was one of the individuals responsible for the destruction of Planet Cereal and the near extinction of the Cerealian race, leading to Granolah's fall to villainy.
Dragon Ball Z[]
Frieza Saga[]
- He terrorizes Planet Namek whilst searching for their Dragon Balls, killing most of its population, including children such as Cargo (manga only, as in the anime, it was Dodoria who did it).
- He is (indirectly) responsible for the death of Grand Elder Guru due to murdering most of the Namekians, therefore causing the Dragon Balls to turn to stone and ruining Dende, Gohan, Vegeta and Krillin's wish.
- Although he was angry about the deaths of the Ginyu Force at the hands of Vegeta, it doesn’t mean he genuinely cared for them either way, but was merely angry that he lost most of his strongest minions.
- While he was torturing Vegeta, he ate a live crab off his shoulder.
- He murdered Dende, who was a child at the time, to prevent his healing powers from being used any further.
- He killed Vegeta by shooting a Death Beam at him when he encouraged Goku to kill him. Although he meant to shut Vegeta up and killed him by accident, he couldn't have cared less and mocked his death.
- After surviving the Spirit Bomb, he mentally tortured Goku by mortally wounding Piccolo and blowing up Krillin before attempting to do the same to Gohan, causing Goku to become the very thing he feared: a Super Saiyan.
- When Goku calls him out for killing countless innocent people, including Krillin, he hypocritically reminds Goku that the Saiyans have just as much blood on their hands. While Goku admits that what he said is true, this doesn't count as prevention since several of the Saiyans' kills were ordered by him, and he only said that line to taunt and spite Goku.
- Under frustration over Goku overpowering him, he damaged Namek's core in order to starve Goku and his friends out of the air and as an attempt to destroy the planet.
- When Goku ends the fight after seeing his power drop, Frieza attempts to kill him using his Death Saucers, which inadvertently get him sliced in half. Then, even after Goku chose to show him mercy and give him energy in spite of having good reasons to kill him for good, Frieza cowardly attempts to kill him with a surprise energy blast from behind, which ultimately backfires. While his aparent death is treated as a sad event with Goku's hand even been shown shaking, as he looks down at the crater where Frieza lay with a look of sadness and anger, the tragedy of this moment is less about Frieza seemingly dying and more about Goku being forced to take a life and having to understand that not every villain can be redeemed or stopped by mercy and kindness.
Cell Saga[]
- Right after being revived with cybernetic enhancements by King Cold, he tells his father to set a course for Earth, as he wants to destroy it.
- After detecting Goku coming to Earth, Frieza decided to beat him first and then ordered his army to mercilessly kill all of Earth's inhabitants, while he decided to personally kill Goku's friends, family, and his friends' families as well.
- He tried to kill Future Trunks multiple times to solidify his strength, despite Future Trunks warning him and his army to leave Earth intact, showing many signs of ignorance.
- After ignoring Future Trunks’s warnings, he orders Iru to kill him and orders his men to kill everyone they see. After they all got defeated by Future Trunks himself, Frieza decides to dish out the carnage personally.
- While his death was horrible, as he was sliced multiple times and then turned into ashes by Future Trunks, he completely deserved it for blowing up entire planets and killing countless people.
Filler/Anime Only[]
- He tries to destroy Earth with an attack ten times stronger than the one he used to destroy Namek, despite his father still being on the planet. He would have gone through with it hadn't Future Trunks diverted his attack.
- In the Frieza saga, he furiously killed Orlen for murdering a survivor who knew where Vegeta hid the Dragon Balls, and he threatened to do the same to Zarbon if he didn’t go after and find Vegeta.
- After hiring the Ginyu Force, he killed Namole due to feeling that he would no longer be useful. In the Japanese version, he instead killed Namole for cowardice. However in Dragon Ball Z Kai, the scene was removed.
- His actions caused Cooler (his brother) to invade Earth and attempt to kill Goku himself.
- It's also made abundantly clear that Frieza didn't love or get along with Cooler, considering the latter's hatred for him for being spoiled by their father.
- When Cell was torturing an ogre to find a way out of Hell, Frieza didn't care, refused to protest, and sadistically grinned as it occurred. Then, after seeing Goku arrive in Hell, Frieza ordered the Ginyu Force to kill him. Goku also states that Frieza will refuse to learn the error of his ways even in death.
- In Fusion Reborn, he teams up with a large number of villains to destroy Earth.
- His actions of destroying Planet Vegeta (originally known as Planet Plant in GT) partially played a role in causing Baby's rampage during his attempts to revive it, such as him creating Dr. Myuu and using him to build the machine mutants, invading multiple spaceships, and taking over Vegeta, Trunks, Goten and Gohan's bodies, as well as brainwashing everyone on Earth, including Goku's loved ones, and using the Black Star Dragon Balls to wish for a new planet for the Tuffles, which ended with Earth's destruction and Piccolo's death.
- He allied with Cell and tried to murder Goku (who was turned into a child at the time) alongside him.
- Even though they seem to get along due to them training together and their shared hatred towards Goku, they actually hate each other, as shown in Dragon Ball GT, Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball Fighterz, and would only team up if that would benefit them, rather than genuine partnership.
Dragon Ball Super[]
Resurrection 'F'/Golden Frieza Saga[]
- He had no interest in reviving his father with the Dragon Balls, hypocritically stating that he was bloated with self-importance and demonstrating that he held no love for King Cold whatsoever. In the promotional manga that adapts the first part of the film, he doesn't even ask Sorbet and Tagoma about his father's fate.
- When Tagoma suggests he should ignore getting revenge on the Saiyans due to their superior strength and instead focus on strengthening his empire, Frieza kills him in the film and brutally tortures him in the anime.
- He corrupts Tagoma, turning him from an honorable warrior who respected his superiors into a ruthless, sadistic monster like himself who was willing to sacrifice his comrades to kill his enemies.
- He nearly kills Gohan in a similar way that he killed him a few years ago for no reason other than petty spite.
- He orders Tagoma to kill Goten and Trunks due to them resembling Goku and Future Trunks.
- He murders all 1,000 of his men after they lose to Piccolo, Krillin, Gohan, and Roshi.
- He tortures Gohan due to him sparing Ginyu (reminding him of the time he was spared by Goku), proving himself to be utterly ungrateful to him. He also killed Piccolo due to his intervention in Gohan's torture and said he'd do the same to Goten after killing Gohan.
- He coldly brushes off the deaths of even his most loyal soldiers, such as Tagoma and Ginyu.
- He simultaneously killed the remaining of his soilders (except Sorbrt) as he transform his tfue form.
- In Super anime only, he attempts to kill Krillin, Bulma and Jaco in order to distract Goku during their fight. He later mocks Goku's love for his friends as "being his weak point," showing how egotistical he is.
- He has Sorbet shoot Goku with a fatal laser when the Saiyan offers him a chance to leave with his life, then proceeds to torture him.
- He tried to convince Vegeta into going back into his life of villainy and kill Goku in order to become his second-in-command, but he became angry when Vegeta refused and tried to kill him.
- He destroys Earth out of spite when he is cornered by Vegeta, killing everyone on it, including many of the Z-Fighters and their friends and families, and it would've stayed that way had Whis not rewinded time and his death of being blasted by Goku is played as Karma for his actions.
Tournament of Power Saga[]
- While he does agree to join the Z-Fighters in the Tournament of Power, it is only because Goku threatens to leave him in Hell should he refuse.
- He immediately betrays Goku after being revived and attempts to make a deal with Universe 9 in case Universe 7 does not win the Tournament of Power. While talking to the Gods of Universe 9, he does not express any care for Universe 7 or anyone in the universe he is from if it is wiped from existence, and the only reason he stops is because of Beerus and Whis' arrival.
- He killed several assassins sent by Sidra to test his power, despite Goku requesting him not to, brushing it as inevitable when Universe 9 loses and gets erased.
- What's worse is that earlier, he attempted to make a deal with Universe 9, showing that he didn't even care about it and its people being wiped out of existence despite attempting to make a deal with them.
- In the Super manga, although the negotiation between him and Goku is not shown, it is implied that he attacked Goku after he was released from his prison in Hell, as he was not thrilled to collaborate with him (Goku states that "the peaceful negotiation did not work").
- He wanted to use the Super Dragon Balls to make a wish that would "wrap the gods around his finger," which would've gotten the entire multiverse erased by Zeno due to it being a selfish wish. While Frieza didn't know about this, it's pretty clear that he wouldn't have cared.
- He proposes an alliance to Frost after noticing his resemblance to him and asking him if he likes to command by force like him, telling him to throw Krillin, Tien, and Roshi out of the ring (which Frost does with the first two) and having him shoot down three members of his team, then betrays him by eliminating him and causes Zeno to erase him from existence for trying to attack Frieza outside of the ring. In relation to that, it gets established that if Gohan hadn't figured out that Frieza was only pretending to betray Universe 7, then he would have genuinely done so.
- During the Tournament of Power, he mercilessly tortures several of the fighters from the other universes, sometimes leaving them on the brink of death, as shown with Cabba and Jimizu. He also tortures Caulifla in the manga.
- During Top's beam struggle with Android 17, Frieza appears behind the former, attacking with a barrage of Death Beams while sadistically laughing. While he did save 17 from elimination, it wasn't intentional, as he only primarily did so to torture Top.
- While he does fight Jiren alongside Goku and trusts him, it was only for pragmatic reasons, as he wanted to make sure that Goku would keep his word about reviving him.
- Even after helping Goku and the Z-Fighters win the Tournament of Power, he immediately reverts back to his old ways and starts rebuilding his empire.
Broly Movie/Saga[]
- He manipulated Paragus and his son Broly into helping get revenge on Goku and Vegeta, despite the fact that he wiped out almost all of their people (although Paragus didn't care much for the Saiyan race due to King Vegeta exiling him and his son).
- He invades Earth once again in an attempt to conquer it and steals the Dragon Balls from Capsule Corp., simply so he can make himself five centimeters taller and not look that short anymore. While he no longer wishes for immortality, it's only because he doesn't want to go through an endless cycle of death and life.
- He betrays and murders Paragus in order to have Broly unlock his "Legendary Super Saiyan" form and kill Goku and Vegeta for him.
- He tries to murder Cheelai and Lemo after they betray him and use the Dragon Balls to save Broly from being killed by Gogeta. After Gogeta prevents him from doing this, Frieza spitefully promises that he'll return to conquer Earth once again before finally retreating and continuing to conquer more planets.
Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga[]
- Despite being prevented from hurting anyone else on Earth, he still receives no punishment for his crimes. What's more is that he shows no interest in stopping Moro and the rest of the criminals who broke out of the Galactic Patrol Prison, and when Kikono questions this by stating they are criminals too, Frieza replies that they overtake planets to sell to other races who are in need of new planets, so they're merely businessmen. This demonstrates Frieza's massive hypocrisy, which in turn allows Moro to cause as much death and destruction he wants.
Granolah the Survivor Saga[]
- During the end of Granolah the Survivor Saga, he appears after being contacted by Elec, well aware of the Heeter's plans to dispose of him before Gas' lifespan expires, then kills Gas to dispatch the husk of a Heeter with ease.
- He reveals to Elec that he already knew about the Heeters' plans to kill him and mocks him by revealing that he was the weakest Heeter before killing him for his betrayal.
- He only spared Goku and Vegeta because he had a different target, such as recruiting Oil and Macki into his army.
Trivia[]
- As Dragon Ball is an ongoing series, with Frieza still being a looming threat, with him practically confirmed to return as a main arc villain in the future, it is possible his PE status may be affected. However, given his high amount of atrocities and having backstabbed the heroes before, that isn't very likely.
