Freed Sellzen is a major antagonist in the High School DXD fantasy light novel and anime. He was a stray exorcist who allied himself with the Fallen Angels and later offered service to other villains like Raynare and Kokabeil.
He was voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (who also voiced Wang from Darwin's Game) in the Japanese version, and by Ben Phillips in the dubbed English version.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He has an unreasonable and sadistic xenophobic hatred toward Demons and Monsters, taking pure joy in torturing, killing and occasionally sexually harassing them. He prides himself on how many he has killed, viewing it as his record. Not only does this have nothing to do with being motivated by any higher purpose since he never believed in God in the first place, but his hatred towards them is incredibly hypocritical since he later allies with a Demon and turns himself into a Monster to gain power.
- While he has plenty of comedic moments (especially in the English dub), they don't detract from how he evil he is and only exemplify his sadism and cruelty.
- While he is clearly insane, he has a clear Moral Agency as shown by how he manipulates Asia and at times acts like a Card-Carrying sadist, as shown when he outright refers to himself as a “psychotic priest”, confirming he is aware of how insane he is.
- Another potential Moral Agency issue that could be seen is him being born a test tube baby made with Siegfried's genetic pattern. However, his sister, Lint, was made from the same genetic material and didn't come out as a complete lunatic like him, even wanting to make up for her brother's crimes.
- His alliances throughout the show are purely pragmatic as he only serves high-ups because he enjoys flaunting his power and using it as an excuse for his sadism. He is shown to be more than willing to betray them as he did with Raynare.
- While he hasn't done as much as some other villains, like Loki and Lucifer (omnicidal mass murderers), as well as Diodora Astaroth (a serial rapist that raped multiple nuns into helpless despair), he makes due with the resources he has, being only a stray exorcist.
Past[]
- He abandoned the Church due to not believing in God and proceeded to become a criminal in the Vatican, giving out services to evil Fallen Angels.
- After Asia Argento (a kind and well-meaning innocent girl) was kicked out of her church for getting tricked into healing a demon (which he was aware of), he manipulated her into becoming his underling. It is heavily implied he was extremely abusive towards her, since she is shown to be fearful of him. It is also safe to assume that he forced his xenophobic hatred towards demons onto her.
Season 1[]
- He murdered Issei's client for calling him which he justifies as "making a deal with the devil" then sat above his pile of blood as he waited for Issei to show up.
- He taunted Issei when proceeded to try to kill him, even knowing Issei is only a recruit at the time. During their fight, he says he will chop up his heart into pieces as he shoots him to death then announces wanting to have a contest to see how many pieces he can chop Issei into.
- He tries to manipulate Asia into letting him continue to kill Issei, even though she views him as a friend and cries for him to stop.
- He angrily slashes off Asia's clothes, then repeatedly bashes her head on the ground and calls her a "filthy tramp" and "stupid bitch" as she cries helplessly. He then had a gun pointed at her vagina and said he feels he's earned the right to "have his way with a naughty girl like her" even though he was ordered not to by his higher-ups. When Issei tries to stop this, he jokingly says he will have to pay to watch him go down on her.
- Abuses Asia more for not putting up a Barrier after his failed rape attempt on her. This is done out in front of the rest of the Research Club.
- Makes multiple sexual comments about Rias and Akeno while trying to kill them, such as calling it a gang bang, calling them devil bitches and even talking about how he gets off on torturing them.
- Kidnaps Asia and taking her away as she cries out for her friends then lets Raynare use her to remove her sacred gear, likely knowing she would torture and kill Asia.
- Asked Raynare for sexual favors as a reward for capturing Asia and saving her from Rias.
- He left Raynare to die at the hands of the Occult Research Club, although Raynare deserved her fate. In the anime, he left her purely because she refused to give him sex before.
Season 2[]
- He tried to kill all of the Occult Research Club again.
- He was seen murdering a helpless priest who was begging for his life while trying to run away from him. He then proceeded to attack Kiba. It is also implied from his dialogue he killed a bunch of priests before that as well.
- He allied himself with Valper Galilei (a priest who performed horrific experiments on children he enslaved only to kill them) and attacked the Research Club under his orders.
- He also allied himself with Kokabiel (a Fallen Angel who wanted to invite a war out of sheer boredom) to help him incite his plans.
- He beat up and used Irina as bait to lure in the Devils so he could help deliver Kokabiel's message, then laughs as Kokabiel explains his plans of war, exclaiming he loves it when he gets all psychotic.
- He attacked the Research Club once again under Kokabiel's orders. While confronting them, he showed off his swords, then asked who wants to taste his blade first for fun. He then ended up attacking all of the Devils with sadistic pleasure and even remarking to Xenovia Quatra that he'll "turn her into a Slip N' Slide."
- It was also implied that he was going to rape Irina, as he attempted to do to Asia, before being interrupted by Kokabiel, who ordered him to keep the former alive.
- He showed up to interfere with the Research Club when Valper called for his help as Kiba was about to kill him.
- He helped Valper mock Kiba about his horrific past, causing him to cry.
- He tried to kill him Kiba yet again, as well as Xenovia for interfering.
Season 3[]
- He allied himself with Diodora Astaroth (and the Khaos Brigade terrorist organization by extension) after they recovered his unconscious body and took him in.
- He cannibalized two of Diodora knights to gain power by mutating into a chimera from it, even claiming they were "finger-linckin' good."
- With his mutation, he tried to kill the party one last time, charging at Kiba.
- He taunted the party about the fact that Diodora lured in and raped multiple women into helpless despair then brainwashing them into becoming his slaves, claiming it is what he plans to do to Asia as well, which he was supporting.
- His last moments are spent telling the Research Club they have no hope when faced against the higher-ups.
Trivia[]
- He and Diodora Astaroth are the only High School DxD villains to be Pure Evil.
- He was originally planned to be an ally to the Occult Research Club, which would've most definitely disqualified him as a Pure Evil.
- Contrarily, he was later planned to be resurrected by the use of the Holy Grail and merging with an Evil Dragon in order to cause destruction, which would only exemplify his Pure Evil status even more. However, this idea was shut down because the author felt that he made his exit smoothly.
