~ Frank Dodd luring in and showing Alma Franchette his scissors before raping and murdering her. |
Deputy Franklin Dodd is the secondary antagonist of the 1983 science fiction thriller film The Dead Zone, based on the 1979 novel of the same name by Stephen King. He is the deputy of Sheriff Bannerman while secretly being a horrific serial killer and rapist in his spare time. He was defeated only when Bannerman came to ask Johnny Smith's service in catching the killer.
He was portrayed by Nicholas Campbell.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He committed numerous of other murders while Johnny was in a coma for five years.
- When Johnny held the hand of the 15-year-old Alma Frenchette’s corpse at the gazebo at night, his psychic powers showed that Dodd, who was right behind him, had undressed, raped, and murdered this girl in the day, and also stabbed her with scissors probably multiple times.
- He was such a threat that Bannerman had no choice but to look for "unconventional methods" to catch him.
- When Dodd noticed Johnny's powers, he flees in the sheriff's car and runs back to his mother's house.
- He shows no care for his mother, just using her as a shield.
- While his suicide was extremely grotesque and over the top, him impaling scissors all over his body, it doesn't detract from his evilness in the slightest and may even be a representation of what he does to his victims.
- He can't be compared to Greg Stillson in the slightest, who tried to start nuclear war on the Soviets, because of their massive resource difference. Dodd is just a typical deputy who didn't have nuclear weapons or political power and still managed to be a prolific serial killer.
Trivia[]
- Only Dodd's movie incarnation can be considered Pure Evil, for his original book counterpart has a horrific backstory, and fails the heinous standards of Stephen King’s mythos, while his movie one easily manages to stand out.
