Don't you look at me! Don't you f-ckin' look at me!
~ Frank Booth
I'll send you a love letter... straight from my heart, f-cker! You know what that is? It's a bullet from a f-ckin' gun, f-cker! You receive a love letter from me, you're f-cked forever! You understand, f-ck?! I'll send you straight to Hell, f-cker!!
~ Frank Booth threatens Jeffrey Beaumont.

Franklin "Frank" Booth is the main antagonist of the 1986 psychological thriller film Blue Velvet. He was a dangerously unhinged crime lord who sadistically abuses and rapes Dorothy Vallens, forcing her into being his sex slave.

He was portrayed by the late Dennis Hopper, who also played Howard Payne in Speed.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Running a criminal empire based on drugs and prostitution.
  • Killing Dorothy Vallens' husband and kidnapping her son so he can blackmail her into being his sex slave. For nights, he would beat and rape her on a regular basis, to the point where she actually became so accustomed to the pain he caused her that she actually wanted it.
    • While he yells at Dorothy not to look at him while he beats her, suggesting that he might have some guilt over this act, this is far too ambiguous and minor to be mitigating.
  • Severing Dorothy's husband's ear and later taunting her over having done so as he rapes her.
  • Has a cop on his payroll kill rival drug dealers to steal their products and break the legs of a prostitute at one of the scenes.
  • When he catches Jeffrey talking to Dorothy outside her apartment, he kidnaps him and drives him around where he can beat and humiliate him because he can.
  • He punches Jeffrey in the face for supposedly disrespecting Ben (when he hadn't at all), just to show he can make Jeffrey do whatever he wants.
  • Molested Dorothy in his car in front of her lover, Jeffrey Beumont. When Jeffrey punches him, he has his men take him outside, where he forcibly kisses Jeffrey on the face and beats him unconscious.
  • Beating Dorothy within an inch of her life and dropping her off in front of Jeffrey's girlfriend's house.
  • While he does let Dorothy see her son from time to time, it's only done to prolong her into being his sex slave.
  • Labotomizing one of his henchmen and later killing him.
  • He very nearly succeeded in killing Jeffrey; however, Jeffrey managed to kill him first.
  • While he is hinted to suffer from Dissociative Identity Disorder, it is established that he still knows right from wrong and does what he does because he enjoys hurting people. There's no evidence to suggest he is being controlled by his other personalities. In fact, it's even implied in the dialogue that he is aware he suffers from DID but still refuses to do anything about it.
  • While there is some reason to believe he may have suffered some sort of trauma in his life, this implication only comes from the fact that he cries to the song "In Dreams" and is far too minor to disqualify him. Even then, it could never make him sympathetic due to the horrendous stuff he does.
  • He jokes around with his men and has an at least friendly relationship with his criminal partner, Ben, even making a toast to the latter and punishing Jeffrey when Jeffrey doesn't join the toast. However, he never shows true care for any of them, even when the police close in.

Trivia[]

  • In the original script, it is strongly implied that Frank raped Jeffrey after taking him into the countryside and beating him. Though little evidence of this exists in the finished film, nothing disconfirms it either. If true, this would make Frank even worse.
