Fernand Mondego is the main antagonist of the 2002 film The Count of Monte Cristo.
He is Edmond’s former best friend from childhood before he betrayed him for his own ends.
He was portrayed by Guy Pearce.
What Makes Him Pure Evil[]
- Despite being Edmond’s best friend from childhood, he deeply hated and resented how Edmond was still happy despite being poor, which he looked down on him for.
- In order to have Mercedes for himself, he conspired with Danglars to frame Edmond on a false charge.
- He's the worst out of all Edmond's rivals, as well the only confirmed backstabber among the conspirators and arguably the conspirator with the worst motive. Danglar was Edmond's rival on the ship from the beginning, and Villefort had a complicated relationship with his father and no relationship with Edmond. All in contrast to Fernand, who used to be Edmond's close friend, and just threw him in jail for getting his close friend's girl.
- His personal betrayal of Edmond resulted in Edmond suffering in a hellish prison for 13 years where he was tortured without mercy, destroying his belief in God, and turning him into a cynical and vengeful person. It also resulted in Edmond’s father committing suicide, and Mercedes living with the knowledge that her love is dead.
- Despite lusting after Mercedes and even marrying her after Edmond was taken away, he shamelessly cheats on her with other women, showing that he never cared for her.
- He personally murders Villefort’s father as part of his agreement with Villefort.
- He also showed no love or attention to his son Albert (who is actually Edmond’s true son), viewing him as “disappointing”, and when he learns the truth of Albert’s parentage, he tells him that he is “the walking proof that his mother was as much of a whore in her younger years as she is today”.
- He murdered the husband of one of the women whom he cheated Mercedes on in a sword duel, mocked his death and his now ruined widow, rubbing it into Mercedes’ face while doing so.
- When he is confronted by Edmond after 16 years, and is questioned why he betrayed him, Fernand merely goaded him into taking his vengeance and mocked him that he will never be a true aristocrat.
- Manipulates Edmond and Albert into a duel to the death to save his own skin.
- When given the chance to leave with his life, Fernand instead choose to aim at Edmond, and when told that it’ll take more than one shot to stop him, decided to shoot Mercedes instead because it would hurt Edmond more, only failing thanks to Jacopo’s interference.
- Before duelling Edmond to the death, he revealed his true reason why he betrayed him and did what he did to him; he couldn’t bear to live in a world where Edmond has everything while he has nothing.
Trivia[]
- Only the 2002 version of him counts as PE, as the original novel version mostly fell to standard villainy.
