“ | I was just thinking back over the defendants I've made plea deals with over the years. People who poured their hearts out to me. Who trusted me with every detail of their crimes. And then, when it came to their sentencing... *sob* I recommended life in prison every time... For every... single... one! Ho-ho... Ohhh-ho-ho-ho... Oh, if only you could see them... *sniffle* The stupid, dumbfounded looks on their faces! | „ |
~ Excelsius, remembering all the lives that he ruined. |
“ | When you get to my level, you don't uncover the truth. You make it, little by little. | „ |
~ Excelsius Winner. |
Excelsius Winner (Japanese: Bansai Ichiyanagi) is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Manfred von Karma) in the Ace Attorney franchise.
He is the overarching antagonist of the Investigations duology, being the overarching antagonist of Ace Attorney Investigations and the secondary antagonist of its sequel Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit.
He is responsible for driving Manfred von Karma into causing DL-6 and indirectly kickstarting the entire series up until his appearance in A Turnabout Forsaken.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Purposefully never communicated with Manfred about Artie Frost's body being missing and forced Hilda Hertz to forge an autopsy report for the case.
- In a flashback dialogue of Turnabout Goodbyes, it is stated that he covered up Manfred's evidence tampering for him previously.
- Used his authority to bend the legal system to his will for decades, throwing people off his trail by making scapegoats out of other members of law enforcement.
- Made many people disappear if they inconvenienced him, including his wife.
- Toyed with people's lives for his own sadistic amusement, such as promising them lesser sentences if they confessed, only to prosecute them fully anyway, just to see the looks on their faces.
- Abuses his son Eustace both emotionally and mentally every time he interacts with him.
- Was a partner in hiring Bodhidharma Kanis to kill the president of Zheng-Fa and replacing him with an evil body double, a crime committed out of pure greed.
- He then had the body double murder Alf Aldown, a journalist who happened to witness the murder plot.
- He, Fifi Laguarde and the body double then planned to kill Kanis to keep the president's assassination a secret, with Kanis only surviving because of Simeon making a distraction by setting a fire and escorting Kanis out safely.
- When Laguarde was the defendant for Aldown's murder, Excelsius tampered with the blood tests and the evidence in order to get her acquitted.
- He contributed to the suffering of everyone living in Zheng-Fa by installing a corrupt murderer into the position as president. While it wasn't his intention, he was aware of how evil the body double was.
- He gave Laguarde command of a prison full of dangerous criminals, turning a blind eye as she abused her power completely. Like the Zheng Fa body double, he was aware of Laguarde's true nature.
- After Laguarde was arrested for murdering Bronco Knight, Excelsius attempted to dispose of the murder weapon to get Laguarde acquitted.
- Started a smuggling ring and auctioned off police evidence to other criminals purely for greed.
- Had Verity Gavèlle interrupt Miles Edgeworth's investigations and threaten him with being disbarred constantly to prevent him from finding out about his plot.
- Killed Rosie Ringer when she tried to confront him for his involvement in her boyfriend's death.
- He also blackmailed his accomplice, Florence Niedler into lying about the wounds on Ringer's body so that Hilda would write a false autopsy report with the threat of hurting her if she refuses.
- He then tried to pin the murder on Kay Faraday, due to her temporary amnesia making her an easy target.
- He attempted to torment Edgeworth to stop him from discovering his plot, showing his abuse didn't stop at his son.
- Caused his son to have a nervous breakdown just to get him to leave the courtroom to prevent him from revealing important information, which Edgeworth, Gavèlle and even Franziska found disgusting. He also did this again when he was on trial, trying to mentally break him once more to stop him from delivering incriminating evidence against him, only failing due to Edgeworth's encouragement.
- He threatened to make Edgeworth and all of his allies disappear permanently for opposing him after Niedler betrayed him to help prove his guilt.
- Sent some of his goons to kidnap Shaun Fenn in order to blackmail Verity into acquitting Laguarde, but they accidentally kidnapped his son, traumatizing him. He may not have intended it, but once he found out, he showed no remorse and, rather then feeling concerned for his son's well being, just seemed annoyed that his men kidnapped the wrong person. He simply improvised when someone else, by coincidence, kidnapped Shaun.
- He also threatened to kill or hurt Shaun if Gavèlle goes against him and tries to give Laguarde a guilty verdict.
- Showed no loyalty to anyone but himself unless someone had the power to help him significantly. His protectiveness of Laguarde was because she could implicate him as one of the president's murderers rather than defending her out of any care for her as a person.
- While his defeat was orchestrated by a circus animal trainer with barely any resources at their disposal, this says more about the latter's intellect than it detracts from Excelsius's vileness.
