~ The Evil Spirit possessing Dani for the first time and taunting Monica. |
The Evil Spirit is one of the main antagonists (alongside Angela Wytte) of the 2015 fantasy webcomic Hooky.
It is a spirit from the underworld summoned by Alice and Romas for their haunted house, but after seeing the potential in Dani it decides to join her by possessing her cat Minino. It starts to follow her pretending to be her friends, but in reality it only attempts to break her down psychologically in order to manipulate her and feed on her desperation. After successfully causing her to break by making her arrive late to Dorian's supposed execution, it manipulates Dani for three years in order to fuel the war between humans and witches while also feeding on her desperation.
What Makes It Pure Evil?[]
- When Alice and Romas asks its help to discover why the group of Dani and Dorian is there, it traps them all into personalized nightmares of their worst fear, causing them so much pain that even Alice and Romas themselves feel bad for them.
- Dani, who has low self-esteem and is insecure about her magical skills, sees her friends rejecting her and telling her that she is dangerous. She even sees a glimpse of the future, where she is the Queen of Witches and Dorian died years ago.
- Ivy, who is arachnophobic, is locked in a room with tons of spider that crawl over her.
- Anne, who is afraid of heights, is placed on a faulty bridge on top of a ravine.
- Amir is trapped in a small box, all alone.
- Mark is in a world where everyone forgot of his friends.
- Monica sees Dorian die in front of her.
- Dorian sees Dani jump down from a tower, almost jumping down himself but thankfully being stopped by his friends before falling to his death.
- When Dani asks it to free her from the nightmare, it replies that it has no intentions to since it feeds on evil, with Alice and Romas helping it to get what it wants. It only accepts to free her once it sees the potential in her to cause great evil.
- It possesses Dani's cat, Minino, and stays in his body for years against his will.
- When Dani asks its help in stopping the villagers that were accidentally turned into werewolves, it accepts only to gain her trust, specifying that it will obey her "for now".
- When it hears about the Dragon causing death and destruction in the Kingdom of Amir's mother, something that leaves everyone else horrified, it smile sadistically, enjoying the chaos it brings.
- It only agrees to help everyone reach the Dragon by increasing Carlo's size because it thinks it is a suicidial mission in which most of them will die, and it wants to enjoy the spectacle.
- After Damien, Dorian and Monica fly away to chase after the Dragon, it makes Carlo go back to his original size, refusing to make him big again and trying to coerce Dani into casting a spell on him to increase his size once again to follow his brother, knowing full well that her spells are actually curses and she most likely would have killed him.
- It agrees to help Dani protect the others against a group of giant animals by blocking their movements, almost getting Aisha stabbed with a arrow in the process, but when she asks it to free them so they can escape it refuses, willing to let them all be eaten by the beasts.
- When Angela kills Monica's parents, the Spirits tries to lure Dani in the room where the assassination just took place to make her see their corpses in an attempt to break her psychologically.
- It sabotages the witches on their way to stop Dorian's execution with the intent of making them arrive too late to save him, making them believe that he died on the stake when in reality he survived.
- This brings Dani in a state of distress after thinking her brother died, leading to her accidentally cursing herself and forgetting everything, becoming an apathetic puppet in the hands of the Spirit.
- It manipulates Dani for the following three years, giving her orders, making her more aggressive and making sure to keep her in this state, knowingly fueling the war between humans and witches.
- It causes Dani nightmares when Alice and Romas tries to help her remember with a potion, making her see an illusion of Dorian that reminds her that he died long ago just to torment her.
- It orders Dani to attack Nico, only letting him live because it makes her suffer and it considers her desperation delicious.
- It orders Dani to violently attack an old witch who was only trying to help her with a potions, saying that they are trying to give her weird ideas.
- When Angela and the other witches attack during Monica and William's wedding, it uses its tendril to protect Dani from some healing potions that could have helped her get better, before using the same tendrils to stab Monica in the shoulder.
- It possesses Dani when Monica manages to make her drink some of the healing potion, taunting the Princess by telling her that she saw her fear and she is pathetic, before eventually retreating.
- It forcefully possesses Dani to make her kill and eat a deer despite her refusals, and when a hunter and his son stumble upon it while it is possessing her body it tries to kill them while taunting them.
- It orders Dani to kill everyone inside the hunter's cabin, knowing well that among them there are her brothers and friends, telling her to leave only one survivor to make them suffer.
- When it sees Dorian begging Dani to regain her senses, it sadistically says that his suffering is delicious and it wants more of it, ordering Dani to burn down the cabin with everyone inside before retreating.
- After Dorian catches up on them, the Spirit forcefully possesses Dani's body and tries to use it to kill her own brother with it, wounding him with a powerful attack.
- When Dani tries to fight back its possession because it is causing her much pain, it forcefully possesses her once again, using her magic to attack and severely wound Dorian's dragon before feasting on his desperation.
- It attacks Dorians before it can say anything about the fact that Dani is possessed, and then attempts to kills Damien and Monica.
- It reveals its plan to kill most of the group to feast on the desperation of the survivors in order to become strong enough to possess Dani's body forever.
- When it is kicked out of Dani's body, it complains that it could have caused chaos through the world in her body, and plans to take it back instead of staying in Minino's body.
- It plans to kill Dorian by biting him in the jugular, only being stopped by the arrival of the others.
- It orders Dani to kill everyone, leading to her almost killing Mark.
- When it is discovered, it traps everyone in a nightmare once again, planning to keep them all trapped forever.
- After Dorian sees through its illusions, it attempts to possess his body instead.
- Even as it is about to be banished, it still tries to mock Dorian, telling him that his sister will never actually come back to him.
- It has no real loyalty towards anyone aside from itself, ditching Alice and Romas the moment it sees the potential in Dani, and hurting the latter psychologically several times only to make her suffer as much as possible.
- It showing concern for Dani's life a couple of time is not out of genuine care, but out of pure personal interests since it needs her magical powers to be as strong as it is, straight up saying to her that she is of no use to it if she dies.
- It obeying Dani's order for a while is out of pragmatic interests, doing so only because she needs her magical power, to gain her trust and also to put her in a situation in which she can be manipulated more easily.
- While it is a Spirit, there is no indication that it is made of evil, with its actions showing a clear moral agency and a deep understanding of human emotions that it uses to manipulate others. And despite it claiming that it feeds on suffering, this feeding is not something that it requires to survive but rather, as it itself explains, to become stronger and nothing else.
- Despite the fact that there are other villains who are murderers and warmongers, the Evil Spirit stands out thanks to its heinousness being much more psychological, torturing others mentally to cause them as much pain as possible. It also has a lot of personal villainy towards Dani since it tormented and manipulated her for three years, with its actions also fueling the war between humans and witches to higher degrees, all while having lower resources than the other villains because of being weak on its own and having to rely on the magical powers of someone else.
Trivia[]
- Despite having an important role in the series and being the main culprint of what happens after the three years timeskip, the Spirit is only introduced in the comic in Episode 88 out of 222 and doesn't have a big role until Dorian's execution.
