“ | I am supreme commander of SPECTRE, the Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion. Yesterday morning the American air force launched two cruise missiles from S wadley air base in Great Britain. Through the ingenuity of SPECTRE, the dummy warheads they carried were replaced with live nuclear warheads. Your weapons of destruction are now safely in our possession and will be moved to two secret targets. Please note the serial numbers of the missiles. They will confirm the truth. Your weapons of deterrence did not deter us from our objective. A terrible catastrophe now confronts you. However, it can be avoided by paying a tribute to our organisation, amounting to % of your respective countries' annual oil purchases. We have accomplished two of the functions the name SPECTRE embodies: terror and extortion. If our demands are not met within seven days, we shall ruthlessly deploy the third: revenge. | „ |
~ Ernst Stavro Blofeld to the NATO officials. |
Ernst Stavro Blofeld is the overarching antagonist of the unnoficial 1983 James Bond film Never Say Never Again, based on Ian Fleming's 1961 novel Thunderball and marking Sean Connery's last time playing the titular role.
He is the enigmatic leader of SPECTRE, a terrorist organization that aims at world domination. Sometime after James Bond enters into forced retirement, Blofeld comes up with the theft of two nuclear warheads from the American Armed Forces, threatening the NATO to give him and his cohorts an unbelievable ransom or otherwise face death or destruction, counting with Maximillian Largo's assistance to do so.
He was portrayed by the late Max von Sydow.
What Makes Him Pure Evil[]
- Under his leadership, SPECTRE orchestrated wars in the Middle East and Central America, financing both insurrections and revolutions through arms/missiles trafficking, leading to the loss of several lives just for profit from selling the same percentage of weapons to both rebels and government officials.
- Leads SPECTRE into a new enterprise through the "Tears of Allah" operation, involving the theft of two nuclear warheads, for which SPECTRE agent Fatima Blush hooked up US Air Force pilot Jack Petachi to heroin, brainwashing him and allowing SPECTRE to subject him to a retinal surgery to allow Petachi to get access to the nuclear warheads and replace them with dummy warheads at RAF Station Swadly by posing as the US President's eyes.
- After Petachi outlives his usefulness and to tie up any loose ends, Blofeld has SPECTRE agent Fatima Blush kill Petachi by putting a snake on his car, causing him to crash it and then having Blush detonate the car with Jack inside, killing him.
- Contacts all of the NASO and threatens them to face nuclear annihilation if they don't pay SPECTRE the 25% of their annual oil revenue, consisting on an unbelievable ransom, forcing Foreign Secretary Lord Ambrose to request M to bring James Bond out from retirement to save the world again.
- Assigns his "Number One" Maximillian Largo to carry out the launch of the two nuclear warheads if the NASO doesn't comply to his demands, setting into motion most of the film's events forcing James Bond to go after Largo to stop him and his operations.
- Promises to toast along with his fellow SPECTRE members once Largo gets the remaining nuclear warhead ready to be launched, as they will be unstoppable then.
- Other than seeing his plans foiled, Blofeld gets away with his crimes and is still on the run by the time of the film's end even after the deaths of Largo and his men at James Bond's hands.
Trivia[]
- In spite of being Pure Evil as his original film series and the rebooted film series counterparts, this Ernst Stavro Blofeld is easily, and ironically, one of the least evil, as he lacks a long list of crimes as his two counterparts due to only appearing in one film.
- That said, there originally plans for two Never Say Never Again sequels that never materialized, which would have presumably brought back Blofeld. Had they been produced, it's possible that Blofeld's status as Pure Evil could have been affected.
