Well, let's see... This is like a dream for me. To die by your hand in person. And I so enjoyed the other demons' last grasps! I feel so blessed...! Because I love to see others in despair and agony. Because it's like a dream come true for me! I thank you for leaving me for last!
~ Enmu describes his upcoming fate and thanks Muzan Kibutsuji for leaving him last, only to be spared seconds later and getting tasked to kill the Hashira and Tanjiro while being promised blood from him if he succeeded.
If I kill a Hashira and this boy, I would get even more blood by master Muzan... this is like a dream!
~ Enmu
Why did you wake up? Didn’t i gave you a sweet dream? If i had wished it, i could’ve shown you a dream where your family was being slaughtered. Alright, why don’t i show you a dream where your father comes back to life?
~ Enmu proposes to Tanjiro to come back to sleep.

Enmu (in Japanese: 魘夢, Enmu) is a major antagonist in the action dark fantasy anime/manga series, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, serving as one of two main antagonists (alongside Akaza) of the Mugen Train Arc and the 2020 anime movie adaptation of the same name.

He was a member of the Twelve Kizuki demons as Lower Rank One and directly served under Muzan Kibutsuji. He was the last of the Lower Ranks to be left alive and attacked a train with 200 passengers, with Demon Slayers among them, whom he got tasked to kill the Hashira and Tanjiro by Muzan Kibutsuji. Enmu uses his hypnotic powers to put those who confront him to sleep, and gives them sweet dreams while he very quietly tries to kill them without making them suffer.

He was voiced by Daisuke Hirakawa in the original Japanese version and by Landon McDonald in the English dub.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General/Background[]

  • Enmu was already a horrible person who scammed multiple people by pretending to be a doctor, according to a source from Demon Slayer, showing that becoming a demon did not make him turn evil.
  • Despite Demon Slayer’s high heinous standards, Enmu still manages to stand out due to having less resources, but still was able to not only commit a unique crime of mentally torturing his victims, but was also able to kill 40 people and attempting to kill 200 more people, all while only being a Lower Moon (although Muzan made him stronger before his mission).

The Rehabilitation Training Arc[]

  • He enjoyed seeing the Lower Ranks suffer while they were being brutally slaughtered by Muzan and was only spared after he openly expressed his love of seeing others die in agony and fear. He is then given a portion of Muzan's blood by Muzan himself after the latter saw use in his sadism and took on Muzan’s mission of killing Tanjiro in the Infinity Train with the promise of a promotion to the ranks of the Upper Moons and more of his master’s blood if he succeeded.
  • While he reveres Muzan and says it would be like a dream for him to die by his master hands, it is out of fanatical worship rather than genuine loyalty.

The Mugen Train Arc[]

  • Deployed two demons to kill people on the Mugen Train while he gave them dreams that turned into nightmares. 40 people were murdered this way, and Enmu said that he loves to see the sight of a distorted human face while believing that humans are an inferior race.
  • He took over the Mugen Train and then ordered a group of four teens that Enmu did not put to sleep to go and kill Tanjiro, Kyojuro Rengoku, Zentisu, and Inosuke each by tying their hands onto the Demon Slayers', so they can enter their minds and destroy their consciousness in exchange for Enmu giving them sweet dreams. This forced Tanjiro to knock them out because they were trying to kill him and the other Demon Slayers.
  • When Tanjiro went and confronted Enmu, he asked Tanjiro if he would like a dream where his father comes back to life, and after screaming and being scared that Tanjiro could kill him, he showed him a nightmare of reuniting with his family (including his father) as well as his deceased family insulting him (insulting their memory in the process) and tried to put Tanjiro into despair, with the implication that he would show his family being slaughtered eventually.
  • He merged with the Mugen Train and put 200 people to sleep while giving them sweet dreams this time, then attempts to devour all of them thanks to the conductor, who helped him put them to sleep in exchange for a dream where he can meet his deceased wife and daughter.
  • Ordered one of the conductors to kill Tanjiro and though the conductor failed to kill him, Enmu still successfully managed to give Tanjiro a large wound in the end.
  • During his battle with Tanjiro and Inosuke, he kept inducing dreams into Tanjiro so he can trick him into killing himself in reality, but was luckily saved by Inosuke.
  • When he was dying, he died while being terrified and in despair, and both screamed in sadness and burst into tears because he felt pain and was a Lower Rank of the Twelve Kizuki. However, he had no regrets for his evil deeds, only that he didn’t at least take both Tanjiro and Inosuke (who were both the reason for his defeat) down with him. It’s also poetic justice considering that he enjoyed seeing others in terror and despair.
