Empress Beatrix Vespasian-Orus is a major antagonist of Ninjago: Dragons Rising, serving as the main antagonist of the first season and a minor antagonist in the second season.
She was tyrannical totalitarian ruler of the Kingdom of Imperium, who wanted to rule over all the Merged Realms using Dragon Power from kidnapped dragons. She was originally second in the candidate list behind her twin sister, Zeatrix, who had elemental powers, but Beatrix usurped and banished her.
She is voiced by Nicole Oliver.
What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Even at a young age she was power hungry and entitled, being extremely jealous of her older sister Zeatrix for being her father's firstborn heir as well as her inheritance of his elemental powers.
- While she congratulates Percival on capturing Riyu for her and compliments him for his efforts, this was only so she could maintain her image and manipulate him into one day joining her conquest when he gets older, making her seeming kindness purely pragmatic. Plus, she used his accomplishment to mock Ras for failing to capture Riyu himself.
- Despite claiming to do everything she does for Imperium's benefit, this is just lies to maintain her good publicity. As shown by the undoctored footage of her speeches found by the resistance, she has an incredibly low opinion of her citizens, seeing them as gullible idiots who will believe anything she says. She is even shown to have no qualms about destroying her realm just to get petty revenge on the Ninja, even laughing at the destruction.
- Even with the massive Heinous Standards of the franchise, she easily stands out as she is one of the few villains (aside from the Omega, Morro, and the Preeminent) to have attempted to completely destroy the multiverse, but Beatrix goes much further since her method would have destroyed all of reality in addition to the Merged Realms.
Background[]
- Despite her father and sister's qualms against it, she secretly accepted Ras's offer of Imperium gaining unlimited power by capturing Source Dragons and conquering the other realms.
- With Ras's help, she sabotaged her father's hover chariot and caused it to crash, killing him whilst lying to the people that it was an accident. She and Ras then arrested and exiled Zeatrix and took over Imperium.
- Following the Merge, Zeatrix began living in Ninjago City until she was invited to the Tournament of Sources.
- Throughout her reign, she would transform Imperium from a peaceful and cooperative kingdom that obtained energy from dragons safely into a totalitarian dictatorship that hunted and enslaved dragons, which were locked in holographic cages and forcefully and painfully drained of their energy to power Imperium's technology.
- It's very heavily implied that some of the dragons were eventually killed once their energy was completely drained away. In addition, she would use lies and propaganda to demonize the dragons as mindless and evil monsters to keep the people of Imperium from questioning her methods.
- She also uses her propaganda to brainwash the people of Imperium into worshipping her as the "Good Empress" who's solely responsible for their prosperity. She's shown to be so obsessed with being worshipped and praised that she has any citizen who doesn't follow her ridiculous policies (such as wearing shoulder pads in her likeness on weekdays) publicly shamed and humiliated in a broadcast to the entire kingdom.
- This also makes her indirectly responsible for Sora's tragic past, as her parents were obsessively devoted to Beatrix and disowned and emotionally abused her when she refused to use her genius intellect to build her an army of Photacs after she learned how dragons were really being treated under her captivity.
- At some point she and Ras managed to successfully capture and imprison a Source Dragon underneath her palace to further her plans of conquest. It's heavily implied in the end of season 1, part 1 that imprisoning the Source Dragon was the catalyst behind the Merge, a cosmic event that caused the 16 realms to be forcefully fused into one, which in turn led to Arin's parents disappearing when he was a kid and the Ninja being separated from each other and Wu disappearing.
- This also makes her responsible for the MergeQuakes, a phenomenon where rifts in reality open as a result of separate realms being forcefully joined together and has endangered many lives throughout the Merged Realms.
- After the Merge, she would send the Claws of Imperium to hunt down and capture dragons throughout the Merged Realms, including Riyu and Heatwave.
Dragons Rising Season 1[]
- She sent Ras and Rapton to hunt down and capture Riyu's mother and the rest of his family so that they could lure Lloyd Garmadon out of hiding and learn where to find more Source Dragons. After the plan succeeded, she would taunt the imprisoned Source Dragon that she would have another of his kind confined alongside him soon.
- After Dr. LaRow and Ras succeeded in forcing Anna to activate Imperium's Photac army, she ordered them to have the Photacs recapture the freed dragons and destroy the Ninja.
- After locking Riyu in a cage, she declares her intention to have Dr. LaRow drain him completely of his energy and kill him in order to crush the Ninja's morale and break their spirits, even though Riyu is just a child.
- When Ras protests this course of action due to needing Riyu for his plan, she slaps him and asserts that she doesn't care for his plans and spitefully labels him an "outlander" whose thoughts are irrelevant to her will.
- When the Ninja are able to escape with the liberated dragons through the hidden monastery, she ignores wanting to capture more dragons in favor of getting revenge on the Ninja for their victory over her.
- This also leads her to neglect her kingdom, which begins to suffer from an energy shortage, with Beatrix ignoring LaRow's pragmatic ideas to conserve and limit dragon energy usage and instead ordering their remaining dragons to be drained to death to maintain their energy supply.
- When Ras attempts to reason with her, she has him arrested for failing her despite him helping her rise to power in the first place.
- After learning about the Dragon Cores and their ability to control the MergeQuakes, she orders her forces to find them and bring them to her, declaring her intention to harness their power and use them to weaponize the MergeQuakes against the Ninja. This is despite knowing how dangerous the MergeQuakes are and the threat they pose to the stability of the Merged Realms and reality itself.
- Even Rapton is horrified by Beatrix being willing to endanger the Realms for the sake of petty revenge. This leads to him defecting to the Imperium resistance and obtaining a fake version of the Third Dragon Core in order to sabotage her MergeQuake weapon, and later teaming up with the Ninja to expose her corruption to Imperium.
- When her test of the MergeQuake weapon fails (thanks to Rapton's sabotage), she orders LaRow to drain the energy of the imprisoned Source Dragon to create a third Core. When LaRow warns her of potentially endangering all of Imperium by creating a new Dragon Core from pure Source Dragon energy, she ignores her warnings and instead has Jordana do it for her.
- She attacks the Ninja and their allies (including the Imperium resistance which was made up of children) in order to kill them, also capturing and reimprisoning their dragon.
- When her people turn against her after her deception and corruption are exposed, she throws one of her own guards at the rebelling citizens while insisting that the footage is fake.
- After Jordana successfully drains the Source Dragon to create a Third Dragon Core, she uses her completed MergeQuake weapon to open rifts throughout all of Imperium in order to kill the Ninja and her own kingdom for rebelling against her, with a few of the Ninja and many of her citizens being sucked into these rifts to their apparent deaths. She laughs psychotically at the destruction she causes.
- Because of the multiple MergeQuakes she creates, the stability of the entire Merged Realms weakens completely and results in a massive MergeQuake Storm that would have destroyed all of the Merged Realms at once had the Dragon Cores not been brought together in time. Beatrix had been warned of this happening by the Ninja, but refused to believe them and dismissed it as her enemies wanting her power for themselves.
